Realme 2 Introduction

In May 2018, Oppo formed a sub-brand named Realme and launched an exciting budget smartphone named Realme 1. In August 2018, an upgraded variant named Realme 2 was launched in India to take the brand forward. This smartphone from the house of Realme has all the ingredients to become a blockbuster. It looks stunning, has a modern design along with the display notch. So let us take a look at the Realme 2 review in order to find out if the phone is worth your money or not. However, do take a quick look at its specifications below.

The Realme 2 is powered by a Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor, that runs ColorOS 5.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS. The mobile comes in two configurations - 3GB RAM with 32GB ROM and 4GB RAM with 64GB (expandable up to 256GB). It rocks a 6.2-inch HD+ display. In the camera department, we get a 13 megapixel primary shooter and a 2 megapixel secondary shooter at the back along with a 8 megapixel selfie camera on the front. There is a fingerprint sensor at the back. The phone has Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE, 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, GPS and GLONASS. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, magnetometer, ambient light and proximity sensors. Under the hood, the Realme 2 packs in a 4230mAh non-removable battery.

Realme 2 Hardware and Design - (4.5/5)

The Realme 2 is a gorgeous looking smartphone as it comes with a bezel-less design and is made up of metal and glass. However, unlike other Chinese smartphones, it comes with a glossy back and symmetrical design that makes the phone look like a diamond with each angle reflecting and shinning different black colors. The symmetrical-artwork and spatial effect are created by compressing 12 layers. The build quality is great and it feels very good in hands. It is not very compact in size because of the 6.2-inch display and you will need to use both the hands to use the phone properly. It has an ergonomic and modern design as it comes with minimal bezels on both top and bottom along with super slim bezels on the sides. The edges are circular and thus we get a strong grip. You can use the phone comfortably for longer period without causing any pain in your hands.

Starting with the front of the Realme 2, there is a 6.2-inch display panel along with the selfie camera, couple of sensors and earpiece. There are no capacitive buttons below the display as we get on-screen buttons for navigation. The volume up/down buttons are situated on the left side while the right side has the power/lock button and tray for SIM and microSD cards. The microUSB port, primary microphone, loudspeaker and the 3.5mm headphone jack are found at the bottom while the top houses the secondary microphone. Turning towards the back, we have the dual rear cameras on the top left with LED flash on its right side. The fingerprint sensor in the middle and the Realme brand logo is seen at the bottom. Underneath the non-removable glass back cover, we get a 4230mAh battery (non-removable). Overall, the Realme 2 possess stunning looks and good hardware.

Realme 2 Display - (4/5)

The Realme 2 rocks a 6.2-inch IPS display, which has a resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels (HD+). It is a bezel-less display that looks very modern and immersive. However, we do not get a Full HD+ panel here which was seen on the Realme 1. The colors are accurate, brightness levels are very good. The display is quite tall and thus you need to use both of your hands in most situations to use the phone comfortably. The texts, photos and videos look sharp on this display panel. The viewing angles are good and sunlight legibility is decent as well. The immersive display is great for consuming content. There is Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top of the display that saves it from daily wear and tear.

Coming to the touch response of the Realme 2, it is very fluid and lag free and that is mainly due to the good quality display and smooth interface. Overall, the Realme 2 comes with a massive display that is good for content consumption.

Realme 2 User Interface - (4/5)

The Realme 2 runs on Color OS 5.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box. It is certainly an improvement over its previous iterations found in other Oppo smartphones. However, we are not expecting the Realme 2 to get updated to Android 9.0 OS or later in the future as most budget smartphones are deprived of it and Oppo does not have a good track record. Anyway talking about the interface, the Color OS mainly looks like iOS but it certainly offers great customization options. The icons and settings menu resemble iOS a lot. There are a lot of widgets, wallpapers, effects and themes. Hence, you can make some cosmetic changes according to your choice to change the look of the interface. In terms of stability, the interface is smooth and does not lag in general day-to-day usage. There is a Security Centre app that also includes a power manager, notifications disabler, data monitor and memory cleanup tool. The bezel-less design gets complimented with a lot of gestures and hence you can navigate around easily with gestures. There are some pre-installed apps (bloatware) but you can easily uninstall them in case you do not wish to use them. If you do not like Color OS from the house of Oppo, then you can just download any third-party theme such as Pixel Launcher or Nova Launcher to give it a more different look.
Overall, the Realme 2 has a customizable interface that is quite fluid.

Realme 2 Performance - (4.5/5)

The Realme 2 is being powered by a Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz. It is a low-end processor from the house of Qualcomm but it can handle the general day-to-day tasks very well. There were no visible lags or stuttering while performing the basic tasks. Most popular apps and games loaded up fairly quickly. There is an option of 3GB and 4GB RAM and both of them perform very well. If you’re an average user, the 3GB RAM variant is sufficient for you. If you’re looking for great performance, you can go for the 4GB RAM model. In terms of gaming, you can play most of the high-end games for sure but some of them will run in medium graphics settings. The Realme 2 comes with 32/64GB of internal storage, out of which we got around 24/52GB of free space. The storage can be extended externally by up to 256GB if you need extra storage. The Realme 1 did not have a fingerprint sensor but this one comes with a fingerprint sensor at the back and it works very well. However, you can also unlock the phone using facial recognition and it works quickly and accurately as well.

Coming to the world of connectivity, we get both Dual SIM (nano) option along with Dual 4G VoLTE support. There is a 4230mAh battery (non-removable) under the hood but there is no support for fast charging. You will get above one and half day of battery life with moderate usage as we get AI battery management.
Overall, the Realme 2 is a very good performer.

Realme 2 Audio and Video Quality - (4/5)

The loudspeaker of the Realme 2 is located at the left bottom of the device. The speaker sounds quite good and it is loud as well. There is no audio distortion even at the highest volume levels. Although, while playing games or videos, sound will get blocked by your palms. There is a default music app that comes with the phone and it has most of the features that you will require for listening to music. However, you can also download your favorite music app to replace the native player. You’ll not get any earphones in the box and thus you have to purchase a good pair of earphones in case you do not have one.

The Realme 2 is able to play both Full HD and 4K videos very easily as the display and processor are quite powerful. Again, the default video player app is not the best and hence you should download a third-party video player like MX Player for the best possible video watching experience. Overall, the Realme 2 offers a good audio and video playback.

Realme 2 Camera - (4/5)

In the Realme 2 smartphone, there are 13 megapixel primary lens and 2 megapixel secondary lens at the back. It is a good camera and you can click amazing images in daylight conditions. We got a lot of details and the color saturation was also neutral. The photos shot were vivid and sharp. However, some clicks looked a bit dull occasionally. Pictures clicked indoors in low light had some amount of grain and noise for sure. The second lens helps in capturing portrait images but they come out average. The focusing mechanism was not the fastest. HDR mode helps in taking great landscape pictures with a lot of dynamic range. Also, macro images looked quite good with shallow depth of field effect. Talking about the front-facing camera, we get a 8 megapixel lens and it can take pretty good selfies like most other selfie cameras. However, the speciality of this camera is its A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) and hence the selfies are much better and more vibrant. The A.I. is able to select the best shot, best settings from a lot of combinations and thus you get the best output and it improves overtime.

The camera app of the Realme 2 is very easy to use as it comes with a simple interface. The stock app offers various shooting modes including a pro mode and it is good enough for clicking and editing pictures and videos. The primary cameras can shoot Full HD videos but the quality is average. Overall, the Realme 2 has a decently good set of cameras but they are not the best in the segment.
