Born in a Marathi Brahmin Family, Manikarnika was a girl proficient in arts like Horse riding, Fencing, and Shooting. She got married to Maharaja of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao Newalkar and as per the tradition, her name was changed to “Lakshmi Bai” after the Goddess of wealth. After the early death of their only son, Damodar Rao, the couple adopted a kid and declared him as the heir of Jhansi. As per the ‘Treaty of Friendship’, if there is no heir to the empire, the empire would belong to the Britishers automatically. After the demise of Gangadhar Rao, Rani Lakshmi Bai lead a rebellion against East India Company when they refuse to accept her adopted child as the new king of Jhansi. On June 18th, 1858, Rani Lakshmi Bai died against the British Raj in the battlefields of Gwalior.
