More About Padmaavat Movie

Padmaavat, or as it was previously known as Padmavati, is a film that you might have heard about either amidst the numerous controversies it was surrounded with, especially the slap that initiated it all and the jingoism of the Karni Sena towards the Rajputana culture, or you have been a great fan of people involved with the film.

The film stars Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, Deepika Padukone as Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Raja Ratan Singh, Jim Sarbh as Malik Kafur, Anupriya Goenka as Nagmati, Raza Murad as Jalaluddin Khilji, and Aditi Rao Hydari as Mehrunisa. Padmaavat is a story that revolves around these main characters especially Alauddin Khilji, Padmavati, and Raja Ratan Singh. These three people show us three different personalities, Ratan Singh portraying the man with principles, Alauddin Khilji as a man who desires to achieve whatever there is precious in this world at any cost, and Padmavati portrays the role of a woman who stands beside his man no matter what, without worrying about her own life.

The film is set at the time of the Delhi Sultanate when Alauddin dethroned Jalaluddin (his uncle) and crowned himself as the sultan of Delhi. With each and every frame of the film you will feel that the story is getting intense, too intertwined though, but looking at the adamant needs and desires of Alauddin, the fog is particularly spread apart to give you the clear picture. But there was another character who held the same desire in his heart, he undoubtedly achieved it but was no longer alive to see it. That man was Acharya Raghav Chetan (Played by Aayam Mehta) because of whom Sultan Alauddin laid his eyes on Mewar, Raja Ratan Singh, and Padmavati.

In the beginning, the film just showed the audience the simplicity yet the complexities of the kings and princesses of the primeval time of the Indian history. What they did when they are bored and how they went on hunting, in one such hunt Padmavati accidentally arrowed the king of Mewar, Raja Ratan Singh who was a guest to her father and who came to Singhal looking for the unique pearls for his first wife Nagmati.

Padmavati treated him well and took care of Raja Ratan Singh to compensate for putting an arrow in him. Then, in a swift exchange of looks and a jump cut, Padmavati was married to Raja Ratan Singh and was welcomed to Mewar with the jealous eyes of Nagmati. But that jealousy was not as strong as it was for Jalaluddin who wanted the throne of the Delhi Sultanate and even got that with the help and bravery of his son in law Alauddin. However, Alauddin’s adamant desires troubled the mind of Jalaluddin and he decided to betray him with death but little did he know that Alauddin was prepared to do the same and was the one who would win in it too and he became the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. Before Jalaluddin’s death, he presented Alauddin with a servant who followed every order of him -Malik Kafur.

Padmavati was famous for her beauty but beyond all of it she was a warrior and that’s where her strength lie, she followed the rituals and everything. She was confronted with Acharya Raghav Chetan who too was mesmerized by her beauty and that clouded his wisdom, which later compelled him to cross his limits and he was further exiled from the land of Mewar. Even this humiliation did not calm him, he, crushed under his own ego, went out of Mewar cursing Raja Ratan Singh about coming back and leaving Mewar into debris.

Alauddin was living his life and was achieving every desire but then he was encountered with Raghav Chetan who told him about the “Vishwa-Sundari” Padmavati. Alauddin’s nature of achieving the best gave him the strength to move to Mewar, where he spent months with his army to get a glimpse of Padmavati. He wanted to see her, look at her, memorize her, HAVE her, but nothing worked; however, finally, as Sultan, which he was, he sent a messenger and requested Raja Ratan Singh to invite him for food with the ulterior motive of seeing what Raghav Chetan described as the most beautiful woman. Raja Ratan Singh invited him.

Alauddin entered the Mewar fort alone with an excitement that he could not hide and lived as a normal guest but soon he asked to see Raja Ratan’s family and especially Padmavati. Rage arose and the Rajputs pulled out their swords and held their cold metal to the neck of Alauddin but he didn’t even flinch. He was let go, Raja Ratan being a man of principles let Alauddin go but he only went after he saw a glimpse of Padmavati that would just compel him to want her more. Being in his act, he invited Raja Ratan to his camps out of the Mewar fort.

Raja Ratan agreed but on certain demands which he assumed that Alauddin would not agree to but to his own surprise Alauddin agreed. They both met and Raja Ratan Singh was taken in as the hostage and was brought to Delhi. Padmavati decided to take matters into her own hands, she sent a messenger to Delhi addressing the Sultan, she agreed to meet him but on certain demands. And yes, the Sultan agreed, he agreed to free Raja Ratan Singh, he agreed to allow 800 other Rajputana women to welcome in Delhi, he even agreed to present Padmavati with the head of Raghav Chetan on a spike.

Meanwhile, Alauddin was arrowed by a jealousy of his relative which held him captive to the bed but Alauddin’s desire woke him, allowed him to suffocate to death his culprit. Eventually, making him sit on the throne yet again.

Padmavati on receiving Raghav Chetan’s decapitated head went to Delhi where she met Raja Ratan Singh as escorted by Mehrunnisa -the first wife of Sultan. She betrayed Alauddin’s trust and showed Raja Ratan Singh and Rani Padmavati a doorway out of the fort. Those 800 women were actually men in disguise who attacked the Sultan’s army and laid their lives for their love of Mewar.

Alauddin recovered, punished Mehrunnisa and kept her behind bars and went to Mewar to win, earn the lost respect, and put an end to everything that began there. On reaching Mewar, Alauddin gave a final warning which was stricken off by Raja Ratan Singh and the war began but there was silence, the Raja of Mewar rode his horse and the same was followed by Alauddin, they reached mid ground, both of their armies stood still and then began the dual. To the dual, the result was clear, Raja Ratan Singh would have defeated Alauddin Khilji but a man of principles is never immune to treachery. He fought to win but was brought to his knees by the arrows attacking his back. Alauddin gave the final blow by saying “Jung ka Ek hi usool hai: Jeet.”

With this, began the war, Alauddin rode to the Mewar Fort, looking for Padmavati but was never able to catch her, never able see her for the last time for she was already setting her foot in the fire of Jauhar along with every other woman of the kingdom. Allauddin’s loss was brought blood to his eyes, he dread the doors that shut on his face, he tried hard but the fire has finally set his desires ablaze.

This film is to be seen, it is to be seen more than once. Sometimes, you might find Ranveer Singh exaggerating his character and Raja Ratan Singh as a hypocrite but that does not stop this film from entertaining you.

Fun Fact: The film actually was to have Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead (Sanjay Leela Bhansali even planned them both in Bajirao Mastani a decade back) but Aishwarya wanted Salman to be casted as the role of Khilji and Salman did not like the idea because, as it was shown in this film, Khilji never meets Padmavati.
