Back in April 2018, Asus introduced the best budget smartphone, ZenFone Max Pro M1, which garnered great success and was one of the most popular smartphones of the year. Later the year, the Taiwan-based smartphone manufacturer launched the successor to the ZenFone Max Pro M1. The new ZenFone Max Pro M2 is much more durable with the introduction of Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection in the mid-budget price segment. Engineered to survive on an average 15 consecutive drops from one meter, apparently, the ZenFone Max Pro M2 sports a 6.26-inch FHD+ display with the smallest full-function notch that packs light and proximity sensors along with the selfie camera and earpiece. The smartphone features a dual rear camera setup and a 13MP front-facing camera with a softlight LED flash, placed inside the notch. A massive 5,000 mAh battery juices up the ZenFone Max Pro M2 to last more than two days on a single charge. The device comes in three models - 3GB RAM with 32GB storage, 4GB RAM with 64GB storage, and 6GB RAM with 64GB storage. Inside the box, you get a ZenFone Max Pro M2, a 5V/2A 10W USB power adapter, a microUSB data syncing cable, a user guide, a warranty card, a SIM ejector pin, and a clear soft bumper cover case for the smartphone’s protection. Currently available in a Blue colour model, the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 is readily up for purchase on Flipkart, starting at Rs 12,999.
Asus has this time tried the laminated plastic rear panel that Realme uses for their smartphones, which makes them durable and long lasting, though prone to scratches. The rear panel on the ZenFone Max Pro M2 is a premium 3D Glass-like plastic with a Wave Design which, otherwise, looks stunning but is surely a fingerprint magnet. The left edge of the ZenFone Max Pro M2 carries a triple card slot which accepts dual Nano SIMs and a microSD card up to 2TB. On the right, there is a power button along with the volume rockers that are convenient to reach even when the big smartphone is held with a single hand. The top of the ZenFone Max Pro M2 bears the secondary noise cancellation microphone, while the primary microphone is located at the bottom of the device along with the speaker grilles, microUSB charging port, and the 3.5mm headphone jack. Over at the rear, sits a dual rear camera setup vertically stacked at the top-left while the fingerprint sensor sits at the centre of the left and right edges, and below it you see the ASUS branding. The fingerprint scanner can be reached easily and conveniently without any chances of missing to place the finger on the sensor. The ZenFone Max Pro M2 flaunts a 6.26-inch FHD+ IPS display panel with a small notch housing the front camera, a softlight LED flash, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, earpiece, and a notification LED. This way you get an immersive FullView display along with the best-in-class Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection which is a treat for people who tend to drop their smartphones around 15 consecutive times a day. With such a bigger display, the screen gets a resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels, a 19:9 aspect ratio, 450 nits brightness, 94% NTSC color gamut, and 1500:1 contrast ratio that will indulge you in a much immersive visual experience. Though the screen is somewhat raised above from the body, you will never feel any rough edges. The 3D design all over the ZenFone Max Pro M2 lends it a comfortable grip with rounded edges. Overall, the smartphone carries a dimension of 157.9mm x 75.5mm x 8.5mm and weighs around 175 grams, which is a bit lighter and a bit smaller than the previous generation Max Pro M1, though the screen has been increased in size by eliminating most of the bezels all around.
Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 features the higher 14nm-processed Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset with Artificial Intelligence Engine (AIE) clocked up to 1.95GHz, with eight 64-bit Kryo 260 CPU chips. The processor is coupled with Qualcomm Adreno 512 GPU for graphics intensive tasks, which the smartphone handles pretty well. The Snapdragon 660 SoC on the ZenFone Max Pro M2 is much more power efficient and surely a better performer than the predecessor ZenFone Max Pro M1, which ran on an Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset. The Max Pro M2 is available in three variants featuring LPDDR4X RAM with eMCP storage - 3GB RAM with 32GB storage, 4GB and 6GB RAM models along with 64GB of storage each - along with 100GB of free Google Drive space for a year. The storage is further expandable using the dedicated microSD card slot which accepts a card up to 2TB. App launch time on the ZenFone Max Pro M2 is snappy as compared to the Max Pro M1, and the loading speed for basic apps is pretty quick, too. Handling daily tasks on your smartphones including running multiple social networking apps in the background won’t be any issue for the users. Talking about processing and performance, gaming should not be left out and yes the ZenFone Max Pro M2 handles gaming pretty well with the Snapdragon 660 chipset. PUBG Mobile game was set at medium graphics by default on the smartphone and we did not notice any lags or frame drops while playing the game. Other graphic intensive games such as Asphalt 9, too, did not disappoint us on the ZenFone Max Pro M2, though the chipset has been underclocked at the base 1.95GHz processing speed.
The ZenFone Max Pro M2 packs a bunch of sensors including the e-compass, gravity sensor, acceleration sensor, ambient light and proximity sensors, gyroscope, and a rear fingerprint sensor. Connectivity options on the ZenFone Max Pro M2 includes Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ GLONASS, GALILEO, QZSS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, dual Nano-SIM, dedicated microSD slot, and a microUSB port. The dual SIMs support dual 4G VoLTE and good internet speeds on the telecom network with 5.76Mbps upload and 42Mbps download speeds.
Photography is one aspect that is always taken into consideration while purchasing a smartphone as most people may not be too much into gaming but they surely would love to click some good pictures. Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 features the flagship level 12MP Sony IMX486 sensor at the rear along with the same 5MP depth sensor that we saw on the ZenFone Max Pro M1. The primary image sensor is an 6P element lens with f/1.8 aperture and 1.25-micron pixel size while the secondary image sensor takes f/2.4 aperture. The dual rear cameras are a set of AI lens along with 13 scene detection feature and LED flash support. The rear cameras are capable of recording 4K videos at 30 frames per second (fps) with Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) for less shaky videos. The pictures clicked with the rear cameras are decent and not that good, but for daily photography they can be of some help to the user. Low Light shots are unexpectedly good in this segment, all thanks to the AI scene detection and the f/1.8 aperture. Over at the front, there is a 13MP image sensor with f/2.0 aperture and a pixel size of 1.12-micron, accompanied by a softlight LED flash, all placed inside the ‘smallest full function notch’. The front image sensor is a 5P element lens that can shoot super sharp selfies in low or no light conditions. The selfies clicked using the 13MP front camera are undoubtedly brighter even in low light and that’s a treat for selfie lovers, all thanks to the f/2.0 aperture, HDR support and softlight LED flash. The front camera can record up to full HD videos at 30 fps and it also supports EIS that will be made available with an over-the-air (OTA) update soon to all the ZenFone Max Pro M2 smartphones. Overall, the rear cameras click decent pictures while both the rear and front cameras support HDR and Bokeh effects in pictures.
The front camera also supports facial recognition feature that can unlock the ZenFone Max Pro M2 in a glance, thought it is not very accurate in low light conditions but still the unlocking speed is impressive.
Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 features a 5-magnet speaker for louder, deeper and less distorted sound effect. The audio on the smartphone offers a surreal and dynamic sound experience and comes coupled with NXP SmartAmp technology while there are dual internal microphones with ASUS Noise Reduction technology for clearer outgoing voice.
Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 packs a similar 5,000 mAh battery, that the Max Pro M1 packed, still the M2 is the lightest 5,000 mAh battery smartphone in this segment. Such a massive high capacity battery surely can give you more than two days of backup on a single charge on light or moderate usage. On heavy usage, the ZenFone Max Pro M2 can last at least a whole day on a single charge. Though there is a microUSB charging port but the standard 10W power adapter, rated at 5V 2A, takes around 3 hours to juice up the high capacity 5,000 mAh battery from flat to 100%, which is not too fast but still acceptable considering the size of the battery. It can offer up to 46 hours of 4G standby, up to 40 hours of 3G talktime, up to 26 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing, and up to 22 hours of online video playback. Though the battery on the ZenFone Max Pro M2 can offer a great backup time to the users, we would want Asus to introduce some kind of fast charging technology to juice up the device some time quick in the future, given that the Qualcomm chipsets do support Quick Charge. Overall, the battery performance on the smartphone will not disappoint the users even if they are gamers.
Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 provides a smooth and lag free user interface (UI) experience as it features Stock Android just as the Max Pro M1 did. This ZenFone does not run Asus’ own ZenUI which is a treat for stock Android lovers, the UI is user friendly and snappy with Android 8.1 Oreo running out of the box. No custom skin surely offers some freedom to the user as there are a little or no bloatwares inside the smartphone and users can get rid of unwanted apps that are pre-installed on the handset, a feature that custom UI doesn’t offer. We did not miss any custom skin or custom UI on the ZenFone Max Pro M2 when we used the smartphone, though we would really like Asus to introduce full screen navigation gesture and an option to hide the notch in future OTA updates, most probably with the Android Pie updates.
Considering the durability, performance and what the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 has to offer the users, it is so far one of the best smartphones that one can consider buying in sub-Rs 17,000 price bracket. The Corning Gorilla Glass 6-protected smartphone is priced at Rs 12,999 for the 3GB RAM model, Rs 14,999 for 4GB, and Rs 16,999 for the 6GB RAM model. The looks, stock UI, battery backup, and durability all are packed in one affordable and justified packaged device. Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 offers a great deal that you won’t regret in every sense, go for it if you are looking for a smartphone that excels in every aspect in this price segment.
