Pixel 3, a flagship smartphone from Google, was launched in India back in October 2018. It is was announced alongside its sibling, the Pixel 3 XL. The smaller Pixel 3 does not have a notch display which is present in the Pixel 3 XL. It also does not have dual rear cameras but come with dual selfie cameras. So let us check out the Pixel 3 review in order to find out if the phone is worth the premium price tag or not. However, do take a look at the specifications of the mobile below.
The Pixel 3 is powered by a Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor, that comes with 4GB RAM along with 64/128GB internal memory (non-expandable). The phone sports a 5.5-inch Full HD+ bezel-less display and runs on Android 9.0 Pie OS out of the box. In the camera department, there is a 12.2 megapixel camera at the back along with a 8 megapixel selfie camera at the front. A fingerprint sensor is located at the back. There is Single SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, USB Type-C, NFC and GPS. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, barometer, ambient light and proximity sensor. Under the hood, there is a 2915mAh non-removable battery with fast and wireless charging support.
The Pixel 3 is lagging behind in one department from other flagship smartphones and that is the design. It does not look like a premium flagship phone as it comes with thick bezels on top and bottom of the display. However, the space is used for putting front-facing stereo speakers. It is made up of glass and aluminium. The build quality is solid and the glass and aluminium body feels very solid in hands. We get a compact display but due to its thick bezels the phone does not feel very compact. However, you can use it with one hand in most conditions. The phone is quite slim (7.9mm) and also weight (148 gream) is on the lighter side. The curved edges provide a good grip and the glass back has a frost-like finish.
Starting with the front side, we get a 5.5-inch display panel along with selfie cameras, earpiece and couple of sensors. There are on-screen navigation buttons and hence we do not get capacitive buttons. The power/lock button and volume rocker are located on the right side, while the left side remains clean. The USB Type-C port, primary microphone and SIM card slot are located at the bottom while the top remains clean. Moving on to the back, we get primary rear camera along with the secondary microphone and LED flash on the top left followed by the fingerprint sensor in the middle. The Google logo is placed near the bottom of the phone. The back cover is non-removable as it is made up of glass but a 2915mAh battery (non-removable) sits underneath. Overall, the Pixel 3 may not look very premium but it houses great hardware.
The Pixel 3 rocks a 5.5-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels (Full HD+). It is a compact display when compared to the bigger Pixel 3 XL and also this one does not come with a notch. It comes with a OLED panel which is certainly better than LED but it has Full HD+ resolution instead of Quad HD+ resolution. Since most Android flagship smartphones come with Quad HD displays, the Pixel 3 loses out in that area. It is not a bezel-less display as we get thick chins both on top and bottom of the display. It is vivid, crisp and bright. The viewing angles are great and sunlight legibility is good as well. The colors are neutral and the display is tailor-made for watching high-definition content and playing high-end games. We also get a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top of the display to protect it from daily wear and tear. Although, it will not be able to protect it from any physical damage, hence always use a protective case and try not to drop the phone.
The touch response of the Pixel 3 is very smooth and lag free. It is mostly due to the good display quality, fluid interface and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top of the display. Overall, the Pixel 3 has a good display for content consumption.
The Pixel 3 is powered by a Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor clocked at 2.8GHz along with 4GB RAM. It is one of the best flagship chipsets in the world of smartphones and it can certainly handle everything you can throw at it along with performing the basic day-to-day tasks with ease. The most popular apps and games open very quickly as they are well optimized. There is no lag in the interface while performing basic and advanced tasks. You can perform smooth multitasking courtesy of the 4GB RAM onboard. In terms of gaming, this phone is capable of running any high-end game at the highest graphics settings. The Pixel 3 come with 64GB and 128GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 112GB and 230GB and of free space. There is no microSD card support and thus you will have to be content with the internal memory. In case you run out of storage, you need to depend on cloud storages like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back and it can unlock the phone very quickly. There is no Face Unlock feature for unlocking the phone. It is IP68 certified and hence there is water and dust resitance support.
Talking about connectivity, there is Dual SIM (nano) support. We also get 4G VoLTE connectivity and it has dual 4G capability, so you can use both data connections at the same time. The battery capacity of the Pixel 3 is 2915mAh (non-removable) and it supports fast charging as well as wireless charging. You will get one day of battery life with moderate usage. Overall, the Pixel 3 is a great performer.
The Pixel 3 comes with a single 12.2 megapixel rear camera. We do not get dual rear cameras as Google has decided to stick with a single camera whereas other manufacturers have moved on to dual, triple and even quad cameras. However, we get dual selfie cameras on front but more on that later. The rear camera captures great images in natural day lighting conditions and we get a lot of details. The colors are very accurate and the pictures look crisp. The low light performance is pretty good as well and the noise level is very minimal. The computational power helps in capturing portrait images with depth of field effect and it works in most lightning conditions. Although, you should use proper lighting to get the best portrait images. The focusing mechanism is very quick and accurate. Landscape pictures with HDR mode came out very well and macro shots had a lot of depth of field. Coming to the dual 8 megapixel front-facing cameras, you can click some stunning selfies using it. Low light selfies look very good as well. There is a wide-angle lens and it helps in capturing more wide-angled selfies.
The camera app of the Pixel 3 is very intuitive and easy to use. There are a lot of shooting modes including a pro mode but if you're a novice mobile photographer, you should stick to Auto Mode for best results. However, you can use the Pro mode for clicking some stunning DSLR like images. To mention some of the latest features, we get Top Shot, Super Res Zoom, Night Sight and Photobooth mode. You can shoot 4K videos with the rear camera while the selfie cameras shoot 1080p videos. The video quality is superb as well. Overall, the Pixel 3 has a excellent set of cameras but dual rear cameras are still missing.
The front firing stereo speakers of the Pixel 3 are located at the top and bottom. The earpiece at the top doubles up as a speaker and hence we get stereo speakers. The loudspeaker is audible and the sound quality is excellent. It is one of the best in the smartphone world. There was no sound distortion even at the highest volume levels. However, the bezels got bigger due to the speakers and hence the phone does not look very premium. The default music app has all the necessary features and hence you will not need any additional app for playing music. It does not come with a 3.5mm audio jack and thus you get USB Type-C audio support. In the box, we also get a pair of earphones with USB Type-C connectivity and they are pretty good in terms of quality.
The Pixel 3 can play both Full HD and 4K videos without any issues as it comes with a very powerful processor and display. Overall, the Pixel 3 provides an excellent audio and video experience.
The Pixel 3 from the house of Google is a terrific flagship smartphone. It oozes performance from all departments but falls short in the design department. It does not look like a premium flagship smartphone from 2018 with thick bezels. However, the display is great for viewing high-definition content. The stock Android interface is the best you can get on any Android phone. The cameras work really well but we are still missing dual rear cameras. The battery is a bit tiny but it supports both fast and wireless charging. So if you want a flagship phone from Google, go for the Pixel 3. In case you want to check out the competiton, have a look at the Galaxy Note 9, Huawei Mate 20 Pro and iPhone XR.
