    Expert Review

    remove Conclusion

The Honor 7X takes the legacy of the Honor 6X forward and sets a new benchmark in the Indian budget smartphone market. The bezel-less display is really the highlight of the phone along with its good overall performance. The 7X has an aesthetic design, great built, full-screen display, fluid and modern UI, good set of cameras and moderately decent battery life. If we talk about cons, there is no fast charging support, USB Type-C port is missing and we get hybrid SIM slot. Thus, you should purchase the Honor 7X if you want a modern budget smartphone. In case you would like to check out other options, then have a look at the LG Q6, Moto G5S Plus and Xiaomi Mi A1.

After dominating the smartphone market with dual camera phones, Huawei's sub-brand Honor is all set to conquer the bezel-less full-screen display field as well. The company had launched the Honor 7X, a bezel-less mid-ranged budget smartphone in the Indian market back in December 2017. It sets a benchmark in the looks department as most budget smartphones do not come with a bezel-less form factor and also pushes the dual lens system to a new level. So let us find out in our Honor 7X review if you should purchase this smartphone or give it a miss for something else. However, do check out the specifications of the mobile first.

The Honor 7X is powered by a Kirin 659 octa-core processor, that comes with 4GB RAM along with both 32GB and 64GB internal memory (expandable up to 256GB). The phone sports a 5.93-inch Full HD+ bezel-less display and runs on Emotion UI 5.1 based on Android 7.0 Nougat OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get a 16 megapixel primary rear camera and a 2 megapixel secondary rear camera along with a 8 megapixel selfie shooter. A fingerprint sensor is found at the back. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 LE and GPS/GLONASS. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, ambient light and proximity sensor. Under the hood, there is a 3340mAh non-removable battery.

    remove Design & Display

The Honor 7X is undoubtedly a premium smartphone and it can easily be dubbed as the best looking smartphone under Rs. 15,000 category. We have seen bezel-less smartphones in this segment earlier but the 7X takes it a notch higher. The build quality is superb and the metal body feels solid in hands. We get a large display but due to its edge-to-edge design the form factor is quite manageable. Although, the phone is on the taller side and you may not be able to use it with one hand most of the times unless you have really big hands. The phone feels very solid in hands and it is very slim (7.6mm) as well. The weight is on the higher side (165 grams) but it is even distributed and hence you will not feel it. The edges are curved and the phone looks very aesthetically designed. The metal back cover has a matte finish for added grip but do use a protective case as it tends to be slippery sometimes.

Starting with the front side, we get a 5.93-inch display panel along with the selfie camera, earpiece along with couple of sensors. There are on-screen navigation buttons and hence we do not get capacitive buttons. We get the Honor branding below the display on top a tiny bezel. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are located on the right side, while the left side houses the hybrid slot for SIM and microSD cards. The 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB port, primary microphone and loudspeaker are located at the bottom while the secondary microphone is found at the top. Moving on to the back, we get two rear cameras with LED flash at the top left. The fingerprint sensor sits below the camera and the Honor branding is found at the bottom. The back cover is non-removable but a 3340mAh battery (non-removable) sits underneath. Overall, the Honor 7X is one of the best looking smartphones in this segment and is comes with very capable hardware.

The Honor 7X rocks a 5.93-inch bezel-less full-screen IPS display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels (Full HD+). It is undoubtedly the best display in this price segment till date as the edge-to-edge panel looks gorgeous, even when it remains off. It is vivid, crisp and bright. The viewing angles are great and sunlight legibility is moderately good. The colors are neutral and high-definition content looks stunning on this phone. We also get a 2.5D curved glass on top of the display to protect it from daily wear and tear. However, it will not be able to save it from any physical damage, so always use a protective case and do not drop the phone. This display is tailor-made of watching movies and playing games.

The touch response of the Honor 7X is very smooth and there was no lag. It is mainly because of the good display quality, fluid interface and 2.5D curved glass on top of the display. Overall, the Honor 7X has a gorgeous display that looks great even when it remains off.

    remove Performance

The Honor 7X is powered by a Kirin 659 octa-core processor clocked at 2.36GHz along with 4GB RAM. It is a new mid-ranged chipset from the house of Huawei and it is certainly capable of handling all the basic day-to-day tasks easily. The most popular apps and games open very quickly as they are well optimized. The interface does not lag a bit in general usage. You can perform intense multitasking as we get 4GB RAM on board. When it comes to gaming, you can also play all the major high graphics intensive games but some of them might run at medium settings. The Honor 7X comes with both 32GB and 64GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 25GB and 52GB of free space, simultaneously. You should purchase the 64GB variant if you want to store a lot of media because it comes with a hybrid slot and hence increasing storage via microSD card (256GB) will end up in sacrificing a SIM card. The fingerprint sensor placed at the back works very quickly and accurately as well, just like most other fingerprint scanners.

Now coming to the connectivity department, there is Dual SIM (nano) support but we get a hybrid slot. We also get 4G VoLTE connectivity and both the slot supports it. The battery capacity of the Honor 7X is 3340mAh (non-removable) but fast charging support is missing here. You will get up to one day of battery life with moderate usage.

Overall, the Honor 7X is a good performer but it should have had fast charging support.

    remove Cameras

In the camera department, the Honor 7X packs in dual lenses at the back - a 16 megapixel primary sensor along with a 2 megapixel secondary sensor. The camera system can capture good pictures in natural day lighting conditions and we get a lot of details. The colors are quite accurate as well. However, in low lighting and indoor conditions, the images had some noise and grain. The second lens helps in capturing portrait images with depth of field effect but it does not work in all kind of lighting conditions. You can only get good portrait images in great outdoor lighting. The focusing mechanism is very quick and accurate. Landscape pictures with HDR mode came out very well and macro shots had a lot of depth of field. On the front, there is a 8 megapixel selfie camera and it is also capable of clicking good selfies, specially in outdoors. There are various filters along with beauty mode to enhance the selfies.

The camera app of the Honor 7X has a simple interface and hence it is very easy to use. We get a lot of shooting modes including a pro mode in our opinion Auto Mode performs the best in most lighting conditions. Both the front and rear cameras can shoot Full HD videos and the quality is quite good. Overall, the Honor 7X has a capable set of cameras but the dual lens setup could have been a bit better.

    remove Audio & Video

The machine drilled speaker holes of the Honor 7X are placed on the right bottom. The audio from the speaker is quite loud and is very good in quality. We did not face any sound distortion even at the highest volume levels. When it comes to the default music app, it has all the necessary features and thus you will not need any additional app for playing offline music but you can download Saavn if you want to stream online music.

The Honor 7X can play both Full HD and 4K videos without any stress as it comes with a capable processor and display. We do not get any bundled earphone with the phone and thus you have to purchase a good pair of earphones if you already do not own any. Overall, the Honor 7X has great audio and video capabilities.

    remove Software & Ui

The Honor 7X runs on Emotion UI 5.1 based on Android 7.0 Nougat OS out of the box. It will receive Android 8.0 Oreo OS update in the near future and might also end up getting another major OS update, which is a big plus point. Emotion UI from the house of Huawei has evolved a lot and become better over the last couple of years. Earlier, it was not a preferred choice for Android users and it was ignored but the scene has changed completely. EMUI is now very stable and looks very sleek and polished as well. It offers a lot of customizable features starting from built-in themes to gestures. You can change the look of the interface according to your preference. You also have option of App twin which enables you to log in to two different accounts for the same app at the same time. It is very useful for social media and messaging apps. We get some pre-installed apps (bloatware) on the 7X but you can easily uninstall them. In case you do not want to use EMUI, then just download a third-party theme such as Pixel Launcher to get stock Android like look and feel.

Overall, the Honor 7X has a sleek interface that is both fluid and has a lot of added features.
