    Expert Review

After launching the Honor 7X in December 2017, Huawei is back with another affordable bezel-less smartphone. We are talking about the Honor 9 Lite here, which was launched in India back in January 2018. It is a beautiful and premium looking smartphone that also features quad cameras (dual selfie and dual rear cameras). Also, we get a gorgeous bezel-less full-screen display onboard. So lets take a look at the Honor 9 Lite review in order to find out if it is the best smartphone in this segment or not. However do check out the specifications before diving into the full review.

The Honor 9 Lite is powered by a Kirin 659 octa-core processor, that comes with both 3GB and 4GB RAM along with both 32GB and 64GB internal memory (expandable up to 256GB). The phone sports a 5.65-inch Full HD+ bezel-less display and runs on Emotion UI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get a quad-lens setup (two on front and two on back) - a 13 megapixel primary rear camera and a 2 megapixel secondary rear camera along with a 13 megapixel primary selfie camera and a 2 megapixel secondary selfie camera. A fingerprint sensor is found at the back. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 LE and GPS/GLONASS. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, ambient light and proximity sensor. Under the hood, there is a 3000mAh non-removable battery.

    remove Design & Display

The Honor 9 Lite is a fresh breath of air for budget smartphones in general. The phone looks ultra-premium, specially in Sapphire Blue color. It is made up of glass and metal. We have seen bezel-less smartphones in this segment earlier but this is one step closer to as good as it can get. The build quality is outstanding and the metal body feels very solid in hands. We get a decently large-sized display but due to its edge-to-edge design the phone feels very compact. However, the phone is on the taller side but you will easily get used to the size and can use it with one hand most of the times. The phone is quite slim (7.6mm) and the weight (149 grams) is also on the lower side. The curved edges provide a good grip and the glass back has a glossy mirror-like finish. It is very prone to fingerprints but it looks stunning when it is kept clean.

Starting with the front side, we get a 5.65-inch display panel along with dual selfie cameras, earpiece along with couple of sensors. There are on-screen navigation buttons and hence we do not get capacitive buttons. We get the Honor branding below the display. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are located on the right side, while the left side houses the hybrid slot for SIM and microSD cards. The 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB port, primary microphone and loudspeaker are located at the bottom while the top remains clean. Moving on to the back, we get dual rear cameras along with the secondary microphone and LED flash on the top left. The fingerprint sensor sits below the cameras and the Honor branding is found at the bottom. The back cover is non-removable but a 3000mAh battery (non-removable) sits underneath. Overall, the Honor 9 Lite has a brilliant design, good build and great hardware.

The Honor 9 Lite rocks a 5.65-inch bezel-less full-screen IPS display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels (Full HD+). It is a compact display and is much smaller than Honor 7X's 5.93-inch screen size. So we would rate it higher and hence it is the best display in this segment for now. The edge-to-edge panel looks breathtaking, even when the screen remains off. It is vivid, crisp and bright. The viewing angles are good and sunlight legibility is moderately decent. The colors are neutral the display is tailor-made for watching high-definition content. We also get a 2.5D curved glass on top of the display to protect it from daily wear and tear. Although, it will not be able to protect it from any physical damage, hence always use a protective case and try not to drop the phone.

The touch response of the Honor 9 Lite is very smooth and lag free. It is mostly due to the good display quality, fluid interface and 2.5D curved glass on top of the display. Overall, the Honor 9 Lite is a brilliant, compact 18:9 IPS display for consuming high-definition content.

    remove Performance

The Honor 9 Lite is powered by a Kirin 659 octa-core processor clocked at 2.36GHz and it comes in both 3GB and 4GB RAM variants. It is one of the best chipsets that you can get in this price range and it can certainly handle all the general day-to-day tasks with ease. The most popular apps and games open quickly as they are well optimized. There is no lag in the interface while performing basic and advanced tasks. If you want to perform intense multitasking, then go for the 4GB RAM model but the 3GB RAM edition is not a slouch either and performs very well too. In terms of gaming, this phone is capable of running almost all the games but some high graphics intensive ones might run at medium settings. The Honor 9 Lite comes with both 32GB and 64GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 25GB and 52GB of free space, simultaneously. You should purchase the 64GB variant if you want to store a lot of media because it comes with a hybrid slot and hence increasing storage via microSD card (256GB) will end up in sacrificing a SIM card. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back and it is very quick to unlock the phone and has a great accuracy as well.

Now coming to the connectivity department, there is Dual SIM (nano) support but we get a hybrid slot. We also get 4G VoLTE connectivity and it has dual 4G capability, so you can use both data connections at the same time. The battery capacity of the Honor 9 Lite is 3000mAh (non-removable) and there is no fast charging support. You will get almost one day of battery life with moderate usage but if you are a heavy user, then it will not last a day. Overall, the Honor 9 Lite is a great performer and excels in most departments.

    remove Cameras

The Honor 9 Lite is one of the few smartphones in the world to rock a quad camera system. It means we get two cameras at the back and two at the front. They are identical too as we get a 13 megapixel primary lens along with another 2 megapixel secondary lens on both sides. Although, they are not the best in their category but they are pretty good. The primary rear cameras can capture good photos in natural day lighting conditions and we get a lot of details in the images. The colors are quite accurate as well. However, in low lighting and indoors, the pictures had some grain and lacked a bit of detail. The second lens helps in capturing portrait images with depth of field effect but it only works well in perfect lighting conditions. You can only get good portrait images in great outdoor lighting. The focusing mechanism is quick and accurate. Landscape pictures with HDR mode came out very well and macro shots had a lot of depth of field. When it comes to the selfie cameras, they can click pretty good photos too and you can also click portrait selfies with the help of the second lens. Standard features such as beauty mode and filters are also available for enhancing the selfies.

The camera app of the Honor 9 Lite has a simple and easy to use interface. There are a lot of shooting modes including a pro mode but if you're a novice mobile photographer, you should stick to Auto Mode for best results. Both the front and rear camera setup can shoot Full HD videos and the quality is quite good. Overall, the Honor 9 Lite has a good quad-camera setup but they are not the best in class.

    remove Audio & Video

The machine drilled speaker holes of the Honor 9 Lite are placed on the right bottom. The loudspeaker is very audible and the sound quality is good as well. There was no sound distortion even at the highest volume levels. However, your palms will block audio and cause distortion when you are holding the phone and playing games or watching videos since the speaker is located at the bottom. The default music app has all the necessary features and hence you will not need any additional app for playing offline music but you can download Saavn if you want to stream online music.

The Honor 9 Lite can play both Full HD and 4K videos without any issues because it has a powerful processor and a capable display. There is no bundled earphone in the package and hence you have to get a good pair of earphones if you already do not own one. Overall, the Honor 9 Lite gives a great audio and video experience.

    remove Software & Ui

The Honor 9 Lite runs on Emotion UI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo OS out of the box. It is the latest and best OS from the house of Google and to get it on a budget smartphone feels awesome. Also, you can expect a major OS update for this smartphone next year. Emotion UI from the house of Huawei has evolved a lot and EMUI 8.0 is the best version till date. EMUI is very stable now and looks very sleek and polished as well. It offers a lot of customizable features starting from built-in themes to gestures. You can change the look of the interface according to your choice. You also have the option of App twin which enables you to log in to two different accounts for the same app at the same time. It is very helpful for handling multiple accounts of social media and messaging apps. There are some pre-installed apps (bloatware) on the 9 Lite but you can easily delete them if you do not wish to use them. In case you do not like the EMUI interface for some reason and are more inclined to stock Android, then you can download third-party themes such as Pixel Launcher to get a more sophisticated look.

Overall, the Honor 9 Lite has a great customizable interface that is based on the latest Oreo OS.

    remove Conclusion

The Honor 9 Lite is a great smartphone in this budget. We are getting a premium bezel-less design that is missing in most budget smartphones. The glass and metal build is superb. We get a great full-screen display, fluid interface based on the latest Android 8.0 Oreo OS and good overall performance. The quad camera system are not class leading but they can click good pictures as well. In terms of cons, the battery life is average, there is no fast charging support and we do not get a dedicated microSD card slot. So if you are looking to purchase a great budget smartphone, then go for the Honor 9 Lite. In case you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the Honor 7X, LG Q6 and Xiaomi Mi A1.
