    Expert Review

Honor 9N is the first budget smartphone from the brand that comes with a notch display. It is very similar to the Honor 9 Lite in terms of specs but looks similar to the Huawei P20 Lite. The mobile was launched back in June 2018 in India. The 9N also comes in gorgeous new colors – Lavender Purple, Robin Egg Blue, Sapphite Blue and Midnight Black. So let us find out in our Honor 9N review if you should purchase this smartphone or give it a miss. However, do check out the specifications of the device below before diving into the full review.

The Honor 9N is powered by a Kirin 659 octa-core processor, that comes with both 3GB and 4GB RAM along with both 32GB and 64/128GB internal memory (expandable up to 256GB). The phone sports a 5.84-inch Full HD+ bezel-less display and runs on Emotion UI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get a dual lens setup at the back (13 megapixel primary lens and 2 megapixel secondary lens) along with a 16 megapixel selfie camera on the front. A fingerprint sensor is found at the back. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 LE and GPS/GLONASS. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, magnetometer, ambient light and proximity sensor. Under the hood, there is a 3000mAh non-removable battery.

    remove Design & Display

The Honor 9N looks very premium and is made up of metal and glass. The build quality is outstanding and the metal body feels very solid in hands. The design feels very fresh and modern and the added display notch looks stunning. We get a fairly large-sized display. It is on the taller side but you will easily get used to the size but you have to use both hands in most cases to use the phone properly. The phone is quite slim (7.7mm) and the weight (152 grams) is on the lower side for a big phone. The curved edges provide a good grip and the back has a glossy finish. You should use a protective case as it tends to slip out from hands due to its shinny surface.

Starting with the front side, we get a 5.84-inch display panel along with a selfie camera, earpiece along with couple of sensors. There are on-screen navigation buttons and hence we do not get capacitive buttons. We get the Honor branding on the bottom chin. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are located on the right side, while the left side houses the slot for SIM and microSD cards. The 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB port, primary microphone and loudspeaker are located at the bottom while the top remains clean. Moving on to the back, we get dual rear cameras along with the secondary microphone and LED flash on the top left. The fingerprint sensor sits below the cameras in the middle and the Honor branding is found at the bottom. The back cover is non-removable but a 3000mAh battery (non-removable) sits underneath. Overall, the Honor 9N has a terrific look in a modern body along with good hardware.

The Honor 9N rocks a 5.84-inch bezel-less full-screen IPS display with a resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels (Full HD+). It is not the most compact display and is bigger than Honor 9 Lite's 5.65-inch screen size. Also, this one comes with a notch and it looks quite stylish. The edge-to-edge panel looks gret, even when the screen remains off. It is vivid, crisp and bright. You are also getting the best possible resolution. The viewing angles are good and sunlight legibility is very decent. The colors look natural and the display is tailor-made for watching high-definition content and playing high-end games. We also get a 2.5D curved glass on top of the display to protect it from daily wear and tear. However, it will not be able to protect it from any physical damage, hence always use a protective case and try not to drop the phone.

The touch response of the Honor 9N is very fluid and lag free. It is because of the good display quality, smooth interface and 2.5D curved glass on top of the display. Overall, the Honor 9N is one of the best in its class and is perfect for high-definition content consumption and gaming.

    remove Performance

The Honor 9N is powered by a Kirin 659 octa-core processor clocked at 2.36GHz and it comes in both 3GB and 4GB RAM variants. It is an in-house chipset from the house of Huawei and it performs at par with the competition. The processor is able to handle the generic tasks very smoothly and there is no lag as such. The most popular apps and games open fairly quickly since they are very well optimized. In case you want to perform some intense multitasking, then you should go for the 4GB RAM variant, however the 3GB RAM model is also good enough for most people. In terms of gaming, this 9N is capable of running almost all the games but most high graphics intensive ones might run at medium settings. The Honor 9N comes in three storage variants - 32GB, 64GB and 124GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 25GB, 52GB and 110GB of free space, simultaneously. There is no dedicated microSD card slot and hence you will lose out on a SIM slot if you insert a microSD card. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back and it is very quick to unlock the phone and has a great accuracy as well. We also get Face Unlocking via the front camera.

Now talking about the connectivity department, there is Dual SIM (nano) support. We also get 4G VoLTE connectivity and it has dual 4G capability, so you can use both data connections at the same time. The battery capacity of the Honor 9N is 3000mAh (non-removable) but it does not come with fast charging support. You will get almost one day of battery life with moderate usage but if you are a heavy user, then it will not last till the end of the day.

Overall, the Honor 9N is a very good performer in most of the departments.

    remove Cameras

The Honor 9N packs in dual rear cameras (13 megapixel primary camera and 2 megapixel secondary camera). The primary rear cameras can capture good images, specially in outdoor day light conditions with natural lighting and we get a lot of details in the photos. The colors are quite accurate as well. However, in low lighting and indoor areas, the photos had a little grain. The second lens is used for clicking portrait images with depth of field effect but it only works well in perfect lighting conditions. You can only get good portrait images in great outdoor lighting. The focusing mechanism is quite quick and accurate as well. Landscape pictures with HDR mode came out very well and macro shots had a lot of depth of field. On the front, we get a 16 megapixel selfie camera and it can click very good selfies too. We get all the standard features such as beauty mode along with filters for enhancing the selfies.

The camera app of the Honor 9N is very simple to use as the interface is intuitive. There are a lot of shooting modes including a pro mode but if you're a novice smartphone photographer, you should stick to Auto Mode for best results. Both the front and rear camera setup can shoot Full HD videos and the quality is quite good. Overall, the Honor 9N comes with a good set of cameras on both sides of the phone.

    remove Audio & Video

The loudspeaker of Honor 9N is placed on the right bottom. The speaker is very audible and the sound quality is good. There was no sound distortion even at the highest volume levels. Although, your palms will block the sound and cause distortion when you are holding the phone and playing games or watching videos as the speaker is located at the bottom. The default music player comes with all the necessary features and hence you will not need any additional application for playing offline music, although you can download Saavn or any other app for streaming online music.

The Honor 9N can play both Full HD and 4K easily because it comes with a powerful processor and a beautiful display. There is no bundled earphones in the package and hence you have to purchase a good pair of earphones if you already do not own one. Overall, the Honor 9N offers a very good audio and video experience.

    remove Software & Ui

The Honor 9N runs on Emotion UI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo OS out of the box. It is certainly the latest OS from the house of Google and to get it on a budget smartphone feels really good. Also, you should expect a major OS update for this smartphone next year. Emotion UI from the house of Huawei has evolved a lot and EMUI 8.0 is the best version till date. EMUI is now very stable and it looks very polished and functional. It offers a lot of customizable features starting from built-in themes to gestures. You can change the look of the interface according to your preference. You also have the option of App twin which enables you to log in to two different accounts for the same app at the same time. It is very helpful for handling multiple accounts of social media and messaging apps. There are some pre-installed apps (bloatware) on the 9N but you can easily delete them if you do not wish to use them. In case you do not like the EMUI interface for some reason and are more inclined to stock Android, then you can surely download third-party themes such as Pixel Launcher or Nova Launcher to get a different look.

Overall, the Honor 9N has a smooth interface based on Oreo OS and it will get major updates in the future, which is a big positive.

    remove Conclusion

The Honor 9N is undoutedly one of the best budget smartphones and it comes with the most modern design language in the smartphone industry. It has a bezel-less display along with a notch and that is the latest trend in smartphones. We get a beautiful design, which gets complimented by the stunning colors. The display looks awesome and the overall build feels solid. The interface is very smooth, battery life is above average and the overall performance is great. The cameras can click great images as well. In terms of cons, it does not have fast charging support and dedicated microSD card slot is also missing. So if you want to purchase one of the best smartphones in this budget, do get the Honor 9N. In case you want to check out the competiton, then have a look at the Redmi Note 5, ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 and Moto G6.
