Honor View 10 packs a punch with high-end hardware specifications at a budget prize. Rivalling OnePlus 5T and its sister, Honor’s flagship handset Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Honor View 10 prides features like 20MP + 16MP dual-lens camera, 128GB storage and ‘world’s first AI processor’ Huawei Kirin 970. Priced at INR 29,999 in India the phone almost sounds too good to be true, especially at the presence of big-ticket smartphones like iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy Note8. But wonders can happen even at lower price and Honor View 10 is one such that deserves our attention.
Smartphones are pushing for slimline display and Honor View 10 is no exception. The 157 x 74.98 x 6.97 mm edge-to-edge screen finishes of with some eye-catchy beveling on the sides. The aluminum rear of View 10 is a glossy blue color, with separate side and rear parts. Weighing about 172 grams the deep-blue chassis exudes the feel of any high-end smartphones available in the market today. The phone does not have any IP rating for dust and water resistance which can put-down some eager buyers.
The Honor View 10’s Huawei Kirin 970 AI processor is something to talk about and Huawei has made a case with it being the first Artificially Intelligent processor. What does it mean? The processor is built on a neural-network processing unit which basically runs unceasingly in the backdrop learning and memorizing user activity and predicting trends. This further implies that over a period of time the View 10 could predict user behavior in using the phone and perform much faster in app pre-loading and performance. But it is debatable whether fast-tracking some applications over others is worthy enough considering the speed with which the phone can fire-up apps and operates anyway. The 6 GB RAM can sound like a big deal but it is a question how effective RAM space is available in the first place. The reason being the processor which requires a chunk of RAM to feed itself continuously.
There are some other features to note in this phone that stands out. Instead of putting the fingerprint sensor at the back of the handset like many of its contemporaries, View 10 has it’s below the screen. Also, the two projecting back cameras is something one will definitely not miss. The phone being only around 7mm thick, which is the slimmest phone of all, it makes a case for the sticking out camera lens in the back. The neat design does justice to a feature like this and could be something to flaunt in this phone.
The 3.5mm headset jack and the charging port is located at the bottom edge. Having no headphone jack is a change that the smartphone biggies have introduced us to and Huawei did not have one with its flagship Mate 10 Pro. But not so in this case.
The 5.99-inch display has a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels at 403 ppi. The screen is crisp and clear and the IPS LCD panel delivers enough pop to the display though some might prefer an OLED more, which is richer in appearance. If you are looking for more vibrancy then switch to the vivid display option which also comes with color temperature adjustments. The ultrawide 18:9 aspect ratio of the screen makes for a great movie watch and the audio quality seems pretty right even if you use without a headset.
Honor View 10 has an excellent option called Navigation Dock that makes moving around the screen easier and smarter. This is increasingly becoming a preferred option in smartphones with growing screen sizes. While many smartphones come with an option of minimizing the screen, View 10 uses a series of gestures to navigate around.
Honor View 10’s Kirin 970 processor has a 12-core Mali-G72 graphics chipset, which means it will give you a vivacious gaming experience. The Game Suite app ensures a seamless performance while you play and inhibits sudden notifications on your screen while you are on it. It should be mentioned that the phone’s 128GB storage is a beast that ensures you have uninterrupted gaming session. The phone comes with Gameloft’s pre-loaded apps, sadly some of which are obsolete and are no longer available on Google Play Store. Honor does not have any music or video app, leaving you to install your own favorite options. It has a single mono speaker in its bottom which is loud enough to make listening podcasts and music engaging.
Honor View 10 has some pretty amazing smart camera options that operates in real-time and can identify up to 13 different scenes. The 20MP monochrome and 16MP RGB dual-lens at the back almost looks like miniature goggles. Apart from some of the basic camera modes present these days, like HDR, panorama, and pro mode, there are other effects inspired by Snapchat, Instagram and Prisma. If you are in love with photo filters then a dozen of filters in View 10 will surely charm you. There is also the perfect Selfie option which works with both front and rear camera. There are a range of enhancements to add through this feature and it is quite fun. Then there is the light painting mode is an icing on the cake. There is a motley of options like Star track, Silky water, Tail light and Light graffiti which enhances your images with startling outcomes.
To talk about the real job of View 10 camera it does a good job of taking almost perfect shots in varied light conditions. There can be some hiccups with exposure though as the camera tends to highlight some greens and suppress other tones. Also, do not expect pixel level sharpness from View 10 which otherwise could have been quite possible with high range cameras. The zoomed images are not so inspiring as it uses a higher-resolution sensor with a similar field view. The night shots with View 10 produces mixed results with some shots being mushy to some being quite crisp. The front 13MP camera is being able to capture good details in fair lighting and tends to lose sharpness in dim lit environments.
The camera does recognize different objects and adjust features accordingly but is not so prudent to discern between real objects and photos of objects. With almost zero shutter lag, fast focusing and an efficient Auto mode, one will get nice shots almost throughout the day.
Honor View 10 runs on Android 8.0 with a skin of Huawei Emotion-UI (EMUI) on top. If this is your first encounter with EMUI then it could be a shocker. Honor phones have been extensively criticized in the past for its EMUI but it is only a matter of time before you start liking the interface. EMUI gives you a plethora of interesting features over and above stock Android. If you are into fiddling around with your phone then there are many explorations that you can indulge into and surprise yourself.
Let’s begin with the Face Unlock feature. After iPhone X this is the new feature consumers are excited about. But there is a flipside. The Face Unlock in Honor View 10 is not as secure as Face ID of iPhone X. It is only as good as unlocking your phone but not as good as making a purchase. For that you have to either authenticate by using the fingerprint or password option.
The phone has a commendable feature called PrivateSpace which is fun to explore. It lets you create your private space which is accessible through a unique password and fingerprint. But keep in mind that PrivateSpace does not work with face unlock. If you are not so game for PrivateSpace then there is App Lock feature if you prefer to lock down few apps instead of using PrivateSpace. Through this feature you list the apps which only you would like to access, and here again you need a password or fingerprint to access App Lock.
For avid social media users with multiple accounts App Twin is a joy to use. This lets you create social media app clones and access your accounts seamlessly. If you prefer hands-free Honor View 10 offers Voice Control feature. This enables you to make a call, unlock your phone and also locate your phone. EMUI gives you options to customize unlike Android. You can choose if you prefer an app drawer over traditional Android app display. Or choose which theme to go with and do note that with each theme EMUI alters every appearance of your phone.
The overall experience is praiseworthy for its snappiness as you glide over in a brisk.
With high-end smartphones costing a bomb Honor View 10 deserves a chance for all the right reasons. If you are not too nosey about brand names then View 10 could be your option to have a high-end smartphone with great design and impressive AI Kirin 970 processor for a mid-range price. This is the phone you should buy when you are aiming for the high with a budget.
