The HTC U11 is a premium flagship smartphone that comes with a great set of cameras, display and top-notch performance. The sound output is stunning and the new Edge Sensor technology makes it stand out among the crowd. However, HTC has not adopted dual rear cameras and bezel-less infinity display design language on the U11. If you do not care about these little flaws, then you can absolutely purchase the HTC U11 as it is certainly a great flagship phone. Although, if you want to check out the competition, then do take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6 and Apple iPhone 7 Plus.
HTC U11, the premium flagship smartphone of 2017, was announced in India back in June 2017. It surely is one of the best Android phones in the Indian market that comes with top-notch hardware and software. The U11, however, comes with a completely new technology called Edge Sensor. It basically means you can squeeze the phone to launch any application of your choice. Thus, the phone has a very big differentiating factor compared to its competition. So let us find out in our HTC U11 review how good the smartphone really is and if Edge Sensor is here to stay or is just a facade. Although, glance your way through the specifications as usual.
The HTC U11 rocks a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, that is powered by a Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor and 6GB RAM. There is 128GB of internal memory, that is expandable up to 2TB. The phone runs on HTC Sense UI based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS. There is a 12 megapixel primary rear camera and a 16 megapixel selfie shooter. A fingerprint scanner is embedded into the home button. There is 4G VoLTE and Dual SIM connectivity. We also get the usual WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band), 3G HSPA+, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, NFC, USB 3.1 Type-C and GPS with GLONASS. In the battery department, there is a 3000mAh battery under the hood with Quick Charge 3.0 support. The HTC U11 boasts of some sensors including gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer, proximity and ambient light sensors.
The HTC U11 comes with a premium design and build quality. The phone has ultra-glossy finish at the back and it is very shiny and reflective. Thus, it gets easily smudged by fingerprints and you have to clean it up regularly to keep it clean. You can put on the clear plastic case that comes in the box to protect the phone from getting damaged as well as getting smudged. HTC has developed a new way to bond layers of glass with "highly refractive precious minerals" and thus we get the metallic liquid look, which looks absolutely stunning. The phone can be used for longer hours with ease because of the rounded edges. You can also use it with one hand. The U11 does feel solid in hands and is certainly a great looking device. It is also not slippery like its predecessor, the HTC U Ultra. This phone is also IP67 rated, which makes it water and dust resistant.
Starting with the back side first, we have the primary camera sitting in the middle of the top half along with the dual LED flash on its left. Below the camera, the HTC branding is engraved on the body. The back cover is not removable but the 3000mAh battery sits inside it. Turning the phone, there is a 5.5-inch display along with the selfie camera, couple of sensors, LED notification and earpiece. Below the display, there is a home button, which also houses the fingerprint sensor along with two backlit capacitive buttons for navigation on both sides. On the right side, we get the volume rockers and power/lock button while the left side remains clean. At the bottom, we have the USB 3.1 Type-C port in the center, loudspeaker on the right and primary microphone on the left. The hybrid SIM slot tray and a secondary microphone is found at the top. There is no 3.5mm audio jack. Overall, the HTC U11 has a stunning design with top-notch hardware.
The HTC U11 features a 5.5-inch 3D curved glass Super LCD5 display, which has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels (Quad HD). It certainly is one of the best high-end displays but we do not get an Infinity or FullVision display like the Galaxy S8 or LG G6. Thus, the U11 has bezels all around its body and it is not a bad thing. However, a bezel-less display makes the phone look stunning and more immersive. We can confidently say that the next HTC flagship (U12) will have a bezel-less display. Apart from that, this display is very bright and sharp. The colors are vivid and accurate. The high pixel density makes the images and videos look absolutely gorgeous. The display is meant for high-definition content consumption and playing graphics intensive games. It offers good viewing angles and sunlight legibility is superb as well. We get Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top of the display to protect it from day-to-day wear and tear. However, it will not be able to protect the display from extreme drops.
The touch response of the U11's display is super smooth and fluid because of the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, responsive UI and curved edges. Overall, the display of the HTC U11 may not be bezel-less but it is still brilliant and you'll love it.
When it comes to performance, the HTC U11 is an absolute beast. It packs in a Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor clocked at 2.45GHz along with 6GB RAM. The 835 is Qualcomm's flagship chipset for the year of 2017 and thus it is the golden standard for Android smartphones. The chipset can handle everything you can throw at it. The day-to-day performance is a breeze with no visible lags, apps and games open quickly and you can perform an insane amount of multitasking as well. There is 6GB RAM onboard and thus the multitasking experience is superb and you can do intense multitasking in this phone by running more than 20 applications simultaneously. In the department of gaming, the GPU is able to handle all kind of games at the highest settings without facing any stuttering. The HTC U11 comes with 128GB internal storage, out of which we got around 115GB of free space. You can bump it up to 2TB by purchasing a microSD card. The fingerprint scanner located in the home button works accurately and is very fast as well.
Talking about connectivity, the U11 from the house of HTC supports Dual SIM and is 4G VoLTE enabled, where both the SIM cards support 4G. However, it comes with a hybrid slot and thus you have to sacrifice the second SIM slot if you want more storage or vice versa. It also supports NFC and USB Type-C charging. The battery capacity of the HTC U11 is 3000mAh. It is a non-removable battery but as it supports Quick Charge 3.0, you can charge from 0-50% in just 30 minutes. The battery life is not the greatest because of the Quad HD display but you can get one day of use with moderate use cases.
Overall, the HTC U11 flagship smartphone comes with serious firepower under its hood.
In the camera department of the HTC U11, there is a 12 megapixel primary rear camera that is also known as the HTC Ultrapixel 3 camera. While most smartphones, be it flagships or mid-rangers, now come with dual rear cameras, HTC has gone with a single lens on the U11. However, the company has used dual lens systems in the past starting from the HTC One (M8) back in 2014 but they were not so good. Coming back to the primary shooter on the U11, it does an amazing job and is certainly one of the best smartphone cameras till date. It is a very powerful that is capable of clicking some stunning images. There is multi-axis OIS support and thus moving shots can be captured without any shaking effect. The images shot during bright daylight conditions comes with lot of detail and color accuracy is fantastic. Pictures clicked in low light environments had little noise due to longer exposures but they had great details and colors. The primary camera is able to focus on subjects very quickly due to the UltraSpeed Auto Focus mechanism and thus it can take great macro images too. HDR photos offer stunning dynamic range as well. Now coming to the selfie camera, there is a 16 megapixel front-facing camera and it can take great images in both natural lighting and low light conditions.
The camera app UI of the HTC U11 has a very simple and easy to use interface, which does not have a lot of on-screen buttons. It offers manual mode and you can even save the images in RAW to edit them extensively on Photoshop or Lightroom. There are several other modes including HDR, Night and Food, that are very helpful for particular themes. The primary camera can record 4K videos with 3D audio, Hi-Res stereo recording with Acoustic Focus and 120 fps slow motion video at 1080p as well. The video quality also lives up to the exceptional still camera quality. Overall, the HTC U11 comes with a great set of cameras and does a brilliant job, specially in low light photography.
The loud-speaker of the HTC U11 is placed at the right bottom of the device beside the USB Type-C port. The audio quality of the loudspeaker is brilliant since it features the iconic HTC BoomSound Hi-Fi edition. The audio is quite loud but does not distort a bit. This smartphone is one of the best audio phones among all the flagship devices. It comes with Google's Play Music app and it supports most of the audio file formats including FLAC. You can even record 3D audio using four microphones and the phone is also Hi-Res audio certified. However, there is no 3.5mm audio jack and you have to use USB Type-C port for audio output. HTC does ship a 3.5mm to USB-C converter in the box.
The HTC U11 can play Full HD and Ultra HD videos with super ease. Hence, you can watch any movie or stream any video on the go without facing any lag or frame drop. It looks stunning because of the Quad HD display onboard. The native video player works very well but you can download a third-party one if you have any personal favorite. The U11 comes with the HTC USonic headset with Active Noise Cancellation and it sound amazing. So, you'll not need a third-party earphone. Overall, the audio and video quality of the HTC U11 is simply amazing but lacks the traditional headphone jack.
Out of the box, the HTC U11 runs on HTC's Sense UI based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS. The company has already promised an Android 8.0 Oreo update. The interface is very smooth and fluid. We did not face any stuttering or lag in the UI in our day-to-day usage. Coming to the features of HTC Sense UI, the interface is quite minimalistic and the experience is very similar to stock Android. HTC has sacrificed some of its in-house apps to keep Google's apps (Gallery, Music). Hence, the interface feels clutter-free and clean. We get to access Blinkfeed by swiping right from the home screen but you can choose to turn it off as well. Blinkfeed basically gives you news snippets from News Republic app and Twitter. You can also sync your other social media profiles as well. One interesting hardware feature to access software functions is the new Edge Sensor technology. You can virtually squeeze the phone to launch different apps or settings like camera, voice recorder, flashlight and more. It can be customized according to your preference. You can even set up short, regular and long squeezes after enabling the advanced mode. The Edge Sensor feature feels quite natural compared to other gestures and we really hope it catches up with other smartphones in the future as well.
Overall, the UI of the HTC U11 is very stock Android like and Edge Sensor gives literally gives it an edge over the competition.
