After launching the Honor 7C in May 2018, Huawei is back with couple of new affordable bezel-less smartphones. Here, we are talking about the Honor 7S, which was launched in India back in September 2018. It is a modern and good looking smartphone. Despite of having a full-screen display, the 7S is not completely bezel-less like the 9N. Let us check out the Honor 7S review to find out if you should purchase this smartphone or give it is a miss. However, do take a look at its specifications first.
The Honor 7S is powered by a MediaTek MT6739 quad-core processor, that comes with 2GB RAM along with 16GB internal memory (expandable up to 256GB). The phone sports a 5.45-inch HD+ bezel-less display and runs on Emotion UI 8.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get a 13 megapixel rer lens along with a 5 megapixel selfie camera. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 LE and GPS. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, ambient light and proximity sensor. Under the hood, there is a 3020mAh non-removable battery.
The Honor 7S looks quite premium and is made up of metal. The build quality is good and the metal body feels very solid in hands. The design feels very fresh and modern. We get a compact-sized display and hence you can easily use it with one hand most of the times. The phone is not the slimmest (8.3mm) but the weight (142 grams) is on the lower side. The curved edges provide a good grip and the metal back has a matte finish. You should use a protective case as it tends to slip out from hands due to its size.
Starting with the front side, we get a 5.45-inch display panel along with a selfie camera, LED flash, earpiece along with couple of sensors. There are on-screen navigation buttons and hence we do not get capacitive buttons. We get the Honor branding on the bottom chin. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are located on the right side, while the left side houses the slot for SIM and microSD cards. The 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB port, primary microphone and loudspeaker are located at the bottom while the top remains clean. Moving on to the back, we get the primary camera along with the secondary microphone and LED flash on the top left. The Honor branding is found in the middle. The back cover is non-removable but a 3020mAh battery (non-removable) sits underneath. Overall, the Honor 7S has a good build along with decent hardware.
The Honor 7S rocks a 5.45-inch bezel-less full-screen IPS display with a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels (HD+). It is a compact display and hence you can easily use it with one hand. The panel looks good as the bezels are very minimal on all sides. It is vivid, crisp and bright. The viewing angles are good and sunlight legibility is moderately decent. The colors are neutral the display is tailor-made for watching high-definition content. We also get a 2.5D curved glass on top of the display to protect it from daily wear and tear. However, it will not be able to protect it from any physical damage, hence always use a protective case and try not to drop the phone.
The touch response of the Honor 7S is very fluid and lag free. It is mostly due to the good display quality, smooth interface and 2.5D curved glass on top of the display. Overall, the Honor 7S comes with a crispy display that is good for content consumption.
The Honor 7S is powered by a MediaTek MT6739 quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and it comes with 2GB RAM. It is a basic chipset from the house of MediaTek but it can handle most of the basic day-to-day tasks without any fuss. The most popular apps and games open fairly quickly since they are very well optimized. There is no lag in the interface while performing basic tasks but it lags a bit when you perform any advanced operations. It is a basic multitasker as we only get 2GB RAM here. In terms of gaming, this phone is capable of running the basic games easily but struggles with the high-end graphics games. The Honor 7S comes with 16GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 9GB of free space. There is a dedicated microSD card slot and hence the low internal storage will not be a major cause of concern. We do not get a fingerprint sensor on this phone but you can unlock the device using Face Unlock. It is not the best in the business but it does a decent job.
Now talking about the connectivity department, there is Dual SIM (nano) support. We also get 4G VoLTE connectivity. The battery capacity of the Honor 7S is 3020mAh (non-removable) and it does not have fast charging support. You will get almost one day of battery life with moderate usage but if you are a heavy user, then it will not last a day.
Overall, the Honor 7S is a decent performer.
The Honor 7S packs in a 13 megapixel rear camera at the back and misses out on dual lens setup. The primary rear camera can capture good photos in natural day lighting conditions and we get a lot of details in the images. The colors are quite accurate as well. However, in low lighting and indoor areas, the photos had some amount of grain and lacked details as well. The focusing mechanism is fairly quick and accurate. Landscape pictures with HDR mode came out very well and macro shots had a lot of depth of field. On the front, we get a 5 megapixel selfie camera and it can click decently good photos too. Standard features such as beauty mode and filters are also available for enhancing the selfies.
The camera app of the Honor 7S has a simple and easy to use interface. There are a lot of shooting modes including a pro mode but if you're a novice mobile photographer, you should stick to Auto Mode for best results. The rear camera is able to shoot Full HD videos but the quality is average. Overall, the Honor 7S has a decent set of cameras.
There are no speaker grilles on the Honor 7S as the earpiece on top of the display also doubles up as a speaker. The loudspeaker is audible and the audio quality is decent. There was no sound distortion even at the highest volume levels. The default music player has all the necessary features and thus you will not need any additional app for playing offline music but you can download Saavn or any other app if you want to stream online music.
The Honor 7S can play both Full HD and 4K videos without any issues because it has a decent processor and a solid display. There is no bundled earphone in the package and thus you have to purchase a good pair of earphones if you already do not have one. Overall, the Honor 7S gives a decent audio and video experience but a dedicated speaker would have been better.
Out of the box, the Honor 7S runs on Emotion UI 8.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS. It is the latest OS from the house of Google and to get it on a budget smartphone feels very good. Also, you can expect a major OS update for this smartphone next year. Emotion UI from the house of Huawei has evolved a lot and EMUI 8.1 is the best version till date. EMUI is very stable right now and it looks quite sleek and polished as well. It offers a lot of customizable features starting from built-in themes to gestures. You can change the look of the interface according to your choice. You also have the option of App twin which enables you to log in to two different accounts for the same app at the same time. It is very helpful for handling multiple accounts of social media and messaging apps. There are some pre-installed apps (bloatware) on the 7S but you can easily delete them if you do not want to use them. In case you do not like the EMUI interface for some reason and are more inclined towards stock Android, then you can surely download third-party themes such as Pixel Launcher to get a different look.
Overall, the Honor 7S has a very fluid interface backed by the latest Android OS.
The Honor 7S is a decent budget smartphone from the house of Huawei. We get a lovely design along with a pretty display. The interface is stable and the cameras are good. The overall performance is decent but the battery life is average and we do not get fast charging support. Also, there is no fingerprint sensor and we get Face Unlock feature. You can purchase the Honor 7S if you’re looking for a decent budet smartphone. If you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the Infinix Smart 2, Asus ZenFone Lite L1 and YU Ace.
