The battery life is great but it lacks fast charging support. So if you are looking to purchase a great budget smartphone, then go for the Huawei Y9 (2019). In case you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the Redmi Note 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy M20 and Vivo Y95.
Huawei Y9 (2019) edition was launched in India back in January 2019. It is a beautiful and premium looking smartphone that also features quad cameras (dual selfie and dual rear cameras). Also, we get a gorgeous bezel-less full-screen display onboard. So lets take a look at the Huawei Y9 (2019) review in order to find out if it is the best smartphone in this segment or not. However do check out the specifications before diving into the full review.
The Huawei Y9 is powered by a Kirin 710 octa-core processor, that comes with 4GB RAM along with 64GB internal memory (expandable up to 400GB). The phone sports a 6.5-inch Full HD+ bezel-less display and runs on Emotion UI 8.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get a quad-lens setup (two on front and two on back) - a 16 megapixel primary rear camera and a 2 megapixel secondary rear camera along with a 13 megapixel primary selfie camera and a 2 megapixel secondary selfie camera. A fingerprint sensor is found at the back. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0 LE and GPS/GLONASS. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, ambient light and proximity sensor. Under the hood, there is a 4000mAh non-removable battery.
The Huawei Y9 (2019) is a premium looking smartphone. It is made up of glass and metal. The build quality is outstanding and the metal body feels very solid in hands. We get a large-sized display and inspite its edge-to-edge design the phone does not feel compact in hands. The phone is on the taller side and hence you will need both hands to use the phone properly. The phone is slim (8.05mm) but the weight (173 grams) is on the higher side. The curved edges provide a good grip and the glass back has a glossy mirror-like finish. It is very prone to fingerprints but it looks stunning when it is kept clean.
Starting with the front side, we get a 6.5-inch display panel along with dual selfie cameras, earpiece along with couple of sensors. There are on-screen navigation buttons and hence we do not get capacitive buttons. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are located on the right side, while the left side houses the slot for SIM and microSD cards. The 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB port, primary microphone and loudspeaker are located at the bottom while the top remains clean. Moving on to the back, we get dual rear cameras along with the secondary microphone and LED flash on the top left. The fingerprint sensor sits below the cameras and the Huawei branding is found at the bottom. The back cover is non-removable but a 4000mAh battery (non-removable) sits underneath. Overall, the Huawei Y9 (2019) is a beautiful smartphone that comes with capable hardware.
The Huawei Y9 (2019) rocks a 6.5-inch bezel-less full-screen IPS display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels (Full HD+). It is a massive display. The edge-to-edge panel looks breathtaking, even when the screen remains off. It is vivid, crisp and bright. The viewing angles are good and sunlight legibility is moderately decent. The colors are neutral the display is tailor-made for watching high-definition content. We also get a 2.5D curved glass on top of the display to protect it from daily wear and tear. Although, it will not be able to protect it from any physical damage, hence always use a protective case and try not to drop the phone. The touch response of the Y9 is very smooth and lag free. It is mostly due to the good display quality, fluid interface and 2.5D curved glass on top of the display. Overall, the Huawei Y9 (2019) has a brilliant display that is meant for consuming high-definition content.
The Huawei Y9 is powered by a Kirin 710 octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz and it comes with 4GB RAM variants. It is one of the best chipsets that you can get in this price range and it can certainly handle all the general day-to-day tasks with ease. The most popular apps and games open quickly as they are well optimized. There is no lag in the interface while performing basic and advanced tasks. It can intensely mutitask with ease. In terms of gaming, this phone is capable of running almost all the games but some high graphics intensive ones might run at medium settings. The Y9 comes with 64GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 52GB of free space, simultaneously. You will also get an additional 400GB storage by adding a microSD card. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back and it is very quick to unlock the phone and has a great accuracy as well.
Now coming to the connectivity department, there is Dual SIM (nano) support. We also get 4G VoLTE connectivity and it has dual 4G capability, so you can use both data connections at the same time. The battery capacity of the Y9 is 4000mAh (non-removable) but there is no fast charging support. You will get almost one and half day of battery life with moderate usage but if you are a heavy user, then it will last a day.
Overall, the Huawei Y9 (2019) is a very good performer and excels in most departments.
The Huawei Y9 comes with quad cameras. There are 16 megapixel and 2 megapixel lenses at the back along with 13 megapixel and 2 megapixel lenses at the front. Although, they are not the best in their category but they are pretty good. The primary rear cameras can capture good photos in natural day lighting conditions and we get a lot of details in the images. The colors are quite accurate as well. However, in low lighting and indoors, the pictures had some grain and lacked a bit of detail. The second lens helps in capturing portrait images with depth of field effect but it only works well in perfect lighting conditions. You can only get good portrait images in great outdoor lighting. The focusing mechanism is quick and accurate. Landscape pictures with HDR mode came out very well and macro shots had a lot of depth of field. When it comes to the selfie cameras, they can click pretty good photos too and you can also click portrait selfies with the help of the second lens. Standard features such as beauty mode and filters are also available for enhancing the selfies.
The camera app of the Huawei Y9 has a simple and easy to use interface. There are a lot of shooting modes including a pro mode but if you're a novice mobile photographer, you should stick to Auto Mode for best results. Both the front and rear camera setup can shoot Full HD videos and the quality is quite good. Overall, the Huawei Y9 (2019) has a good quad-camera setup.
The machine drilled speaker holes of the Huawei Y9 are placed on the right bottom. The loudspeaker is very audible and the sound quality is good as well. There was no sound distortion even at the highest volume levels. However, your palms will block audio and cause distortion when you are holding the phone and playing games or watching videos since the speaker is located at the bottom. The default music app has all the necessary features and hence you will not need any additional app for playing offline music but you can download Saavn if you want to stream online music.
The Huawei Y9 can play both Full HD and 4K videos without any issues because it has a powerful processor and a capable display. We get a pair of earphones but they are average in terms of audio quality. Overall, the Huawei Y9 (2019) gives a good audio and video experience.
The Huawei Y9 runs on Emotion UI 8.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box. It is one of the latest and best Android OS from Google and to get it on a premium budget smartphone feels awesome. Also, you can expect a major OS update for this smartphone next year. Emotion UI from the house of Huawei has evolved a lot till date. EMUI is very stable now and looks very sleek and polished as well. It offers a lot of customizable features starting from built-in themes to gestures. You can change the look of the interface according to your choice. You also have the option of App twin which enables you to log in to two different accounts for the same app at the same time. It is very helpful for handling multiple accounts of social media and messaging apps. There are some pre-installed apps (bloatware) on the Y9 but you can easily delete them if you do not wish to use them. In case you do not like the EMUI interface for some reason and are more inclined to stock Android, then you can download third-party themes such as Pixel Launcher to get a more sophisticated look.
Overall, the Huawei Y9 (2019) has a great customizable interface that is based on Oreo OS.
