    Expert Review

Karbonn Mobiles had introduced the K9 Kavach 4G in India back in July 2017. It is currently one of the entry-level budget smartphones to sport a fingerprint sensor which works quite well. Besides that it also has a good HD display and decent overall specifications. So let us find out in our Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G review if it is worth the money or you should stay away from this smartphone. However, first take a glance at the specifications of the mobile below.

The Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G is powered by a MediaTek MT6737 quad-core processor, that runs on Android 7.0 Nougat OS. The mobile features 1GB RAM, 8GB internal memory (expandable up to 32GB) and rocks a 5-inch HD display. In the camera department, we get a 5 megapixel rear shooter along with another 5 megapixel selfie camera. There is a fingerprint sensor at the back. The phone has Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE, 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, ambient light and proximity sensors. Under the hood, the K9 Kavach packs in a 2300mAh removable battery.

    remove Design & Display

The Karbonn K9 Kavach is completely made of plastic as it is a low-end budget smartphone but the build quality is quite good. The phone is compact as it comes with a 5-inch display and you can use it with one hand all the time. It is a bit heavy (164.5 grams) for a compact phone but you will get used to the weight after sometime. The mobile looks premium due to the chrome band running around the primary camera and fingerprint sensor at the back. The rounded corners give a firm grip and you can use the phone for a longer period without hurting your palms. The removable back cover has a metallic look with matte finish but is made up of plastic as well. The design is ergonomic but it has large bezels on both top and bottom of the display.

Now looking at the front side of the Karbonn K9 Kavach, we find a 5-inch display panel along with the selfie camera, LED flash, couple of sensors and earpiece. Just below the display, there are three capacitive buttons for navigation. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are located on the right side, while the left side remains clean. The microUSB port, secondary microphone and 3.5mm audio jack are found at the top while the primary microphone sits at the bottom. Heading towards the back, we get the primary camera on the top middle along with dual LED flash on its left. The fingerprint sensor is found below it along with the Karbonn branding. At the end we have the loudspeaker grille. Upon opening the removable plastic back cover, we get a 2300mAh battery (removable) along with SIM card slots and a dedicated microSD card slot. Overall, the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G has a decent build, compact design and moderately good hardware.

In the display section of the Karbonn K9 Kavach, there is a 5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 (HD). It is a good, generic display but we are getting the highest display resolution that you can get in any smartphone from this price segment, so it is a fair deal. The screen looks lively as we get a lot of colors and they are not oversaturated as well. It is bright and the viewing angles are moderately good. The texts, images are videos look crisp and the display is certainly made for consuming high-definition content and playing games. There is no branded glass protection on top of the display but we get a generic protection that helps in keeping it safe from daily wear and tear.

The touch response of the Karbonn K9 Kavach is quite smooth due to the good quality display and fluid interface. Overall, the display of the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G is compact, vibrant and is tailor-made for content consumption.

    remove Performance

When it comes to performance, the Karbonn K9 Kavach is powered by a MediaTek MT6737 quad-core processor clocked at 1.25GHz. It is a basic chipset from the house of MediaTek but it gives a constant performance. The smartphone is able to perform the day-to-day tasks with ease and we did not have to face any lag or stuttering. We get 1GB of RAM onboard and it is enough for basic multitasking like running couple of apps in the background simultaneously but it does struggle with intense multitasking and will lag a lot. In terms of gaming, you can easily run the basic 3D games and some high-end games at medium or low settings but they might stutter a bit. The K9 Kavach comes with 8GB of internal storage, out of which we got around 4GB of free space. You can extend the storage up to 32GB by adding a microSD card and you will also not lose out on any SIM slot as it comes with a dedicated microSD card slot. There is a fingerprint sensor at the back and it functions quite accurately and quickly as well.

In terms of networking, we get 4G VoLTE along with Dual SIM connectivity. Here, both the SIM slots support 4G but not simultaneously. There is a 2300mAh battery (removable) under the hood but it is quite average. You will get less than one day of battery life with moderate usage and since there is no fast charging support, the battery also takes more than two hours for getting charged from 0-100%.

Overall, the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G is a moderate performer but the fingerprint sensor works very well.

    remove Cameras

In the camera department, the Karbonn K9 Kavach comes with a 5 megapixel primary camera at the back. It is a very basic camera that can click good images in outdoor bright lighting like most other smartphones. The detailing and color accuracy in this photos under natural lighting were good. Although, in poor lighting, the pictures looked dull with lots of noise and grain. The focusing was a bit slow, expectedly, but once it got locked in, we did not face any trouble shooting objects. If you want your clicked images to look the best, switch on the HDR mode as it will make the pictures look more lively and dynamic. Macro shots were decent as they had some bokeh blur effect. On the front, there is another 5 megapixel camera and it is capable of clicking very decent selfies. We also get a LED flash and it helps in clicking bright and vibrant selfies in not so good lighting conditions.

The camera app of the K9 Kavach is very simple and easy to use, so even first time smartphone camera users can also click good pictures using it. The native camera app offers various shooting modes but we would advice you to use the Auto mode as it clicks good images in most lighting conditions. Both the cameras can shoot HD videos but the quality is average. Overall, the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G features a decent set of cameras.

    remove Audio & Video

The speaker of the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G smartphone is located at the bottom on the back side. The mono speaker strip gives out quality sound and it is quite loud too. There is no audio distortion even at the highest volume levels. Although, sound will get muffled when you put the phone on a flat surface since the speaker is located on the back. The default music app has a lot of features but you can download your favorite third-party app for playing local music or stream online music. We get a bundled earphone with the phone but the quality is average.

The Karbonn K9 Kavach can play or stream both HD and Full HD videos very easily but 4K videos will lag a lot since the processor is low-end and we have only 1GB RAM. The default video player app is not the best and hence you can download a third-party video player like MX Player for the best possible movie watching experience. Overall, the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G gives a decently good audio and video experience.

    remove Software & Ui

The Karbonn K9 Kavach runs on Android 7.0 Nougat OS out of the box. It is one of the latest OSes from the house of Google but do not expect Android 8.0 Oreo OS update in the future as budget smartphones never receive any major OS update. Karbonn has done a good job by not customizing the OS much and hence we get a near stock Android experience. The UI looks clean and feels very fluid. We get most of the basic Nougat features such as Doze, themes, gesture support and more. The basic day-to-day processes were lag free there were some stuttering while playing games and using heavy apps. You will get a lot of pre-installed apps (bloatware) but these can be uninstalled if you want to. However, if you do not like the stock Android like interface, then just download any other third-party theme of your preference to change the look and feel.

Overall, the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G has a fluid interface that works quite well most of the times.

    remove Conclusion

The Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G is a good low-end smartphone like most other devices in this segment. However, what sets it apart from the crowd is the capable fingerprint sensor located below the primary camera since most smartphones in this segment do not have one. Besides the fingerprint scanner, we get an ergonomic design, good build, vibrant HD display, fluid Nougat OS, decent cameras and moderately good overall performance. In terms of cons, it has low internal storage, average battery life and lot os pre-installed bloatware. So we would surely recommend the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G smartphone if you want fingerprint sensor in a low-end budget phone that also performs quite well. However, if you want to check out the competition in this range, check out the iVooMi Me5, Xolo Era 3 and Sansui Horizon 2.
