    Expert Review

    remove Conclusion

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is a wonderful smartphone that excels in most departments. It comes with a premium build and design, bright Full HD display, smooth stock Android OS with promised major updates, great set of rear cameras and good overall performance. However, it does not have a bezel-less design, dedicated microSD card slot and great battery life. Also, the phone feels a bit slippery. So we would certainly recommend the Xiaomi Mi A1 as it is one of the best smartphones in its price range currently. Although, if you want to check out the other options, then do have a look at the Honor 7X, Moto G5S Plus and Honor 9 Lite.

    removeIntroduction

After a disappointing 2016, Xiaomi is on fire in the Indian smartphone market. They are currently the leading smartphone seller in the country and Xiaomi Mi A1 has played an important role in this development. The Mi A1 was launched in India back in September 2017 and is the company's first smartphone to run on stock Android. It is part of the Android One product lineup and hence is made by Xiaomi in collaboration with Google. So let us find out in our Xiaomi Mi A1 review if this is the best smartphone in its price segment or it has got some serious competition. However, do take a closer look at its specifications first.

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is powered by a Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor, coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory (expandable up to 128GB). The phone sports a 5.5-inch Full HD display and runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get two 12 megapixel rear cameras and a 5 megapixel selfie shooter. A fingerprint sensor is located at the back. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band), Bluetooth 4.2 LE, USB Type-C, IR blaster and GPS. In the sensor department, we get an accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity and ambient light sensor. Under the hood, there is a 3080mAh non-removable battery with fast charging support.

    remove Design & Display

The Xiaomi Mi A1 may not belong to the bezel-less smartphone generation but it does have an ergonomic design and a complete metal build. The build quality is superb and the phone feels very premium. The phone feels quite compact and you can easily use it with one hand if you have big hands but in case you have small hands, then you will need to use two hands occasionally in order to use the phone comfortably. Besides the thick bezels at the top and bottom of the display, the front looks very sharp because of the 2.5D curved glass and thin side bezels. It weighs 165 grams and is 7.3mm thick. So, it is neither bulky nor lightweight but it feels good in hands. The edges are slightly curved. The metal back does not have a glossy finish but it is still very slippery and hence we would suggest you to use a protective case.

On the front, we get a 5.5-inch display along with the selfie camera, LED flash, earpiece and couple of sensors. There are three capacitive buttons below the display for navigation. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are placed on the right side while the left side houses the hybrid slot for SIM and microSD card sits. The 3.5mm audio jack, primary microphone, USB Type-C port and loudspeaker are found at the bottom while the IR blaster and secondary microphone are found at the top. Turning towards the back side, we get the dual rear cameras along with the dual LED flash inside a circular enclosure on the top left. The fingerprint sensor is found below the dual lens in the middle, followed by the Mi and Android One branding at the bottom. The back cover is not removable but a 3080mAh battery sits underneath it. Overall, the Xiaomi Mi A1 has an excellent metal build, ergonomic design and top-notch hardware.

The Xiaomi Mi A1 features a 5.5-inch IPS display, which comes with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD). It is not a 18:9 bezel-less Full-Screen display but we are very happy with its quality since it is very sharp and vivid. The brightness and contrast levels are very good. The colors are on the neutral side and the saturation is on point as well. The viewing angles are very good and sunlight legibility is decent as well. We get Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top of the display and it really helps in protecting the screen from daily wear and tear but do not expect it to protect it from any drops.

The touch response of the Xiaomi Mi A1 is very smooth and lag-free due to good quality display, fluid interface and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Overall, the Xiaomi Mi A1 has a bright and vivid display for high-definition content consumption.

    remove Performance

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is powered by a Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz and 4GB RAM. It is a mid-ranged processor from the house of Qualcomm and it can easily take care of the basic day-to-day tasks along with other sophisticated processes. Also, it is one of the best chipsets of this price segment, if no the best. The multitasking experience is very smooth and you can easily run more than ten apps simultaneously in the background without facing any lag or frame drops since we get 4GB RAM onboard. Most popular apps and games load up very quickly and they do not show any stuttering. When it comes to gaming, you can play most of the games at the highest settings but some of the high-end ones might run at medium settings. The Xiaomi Mi A1 comes with 64GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 55GB of free space. If you want more space, then you can increase it up to 128GB by adding a microSD card but you will have to sacrifice a SIM car since it comes with a hybrid slot. There is a fingerprint sensor at the back and it can unlock the phone very quickly.

Talking about connectivity, we get 4G VoLTE support. It is a Dual SIM phone (nano) and both of them supports 4G simultaneously. The battery capacity of the Mi A1 is 3080mAh (non-removable) and it supports fast charging. However, the battery life is average as you will only get around one day of usage with moderate use case and not more whereas other Xiaomi phones offer close to two days of battery life.

Overall, the Xiaomi Mi A1 is a great performer but falls a bit short in the battery department.

    remove Cameras

The Xiaomi Mi A1 boasts of a dual camera setup at the back - a 12 megapixel primary camera (RGB) and another 12 megapixel secondary camera (monochrome). The primary lens is able to capture stunning photos with a lot of detail in bright outdoor conditions. The pictures looked sharp and vivid along with a natural color tone. The secondary lens helped in clicking portrait photos as it captures depth of field information. However, the portrait mode can get better with software updates. When it comes to low light photography, the A1 does not perform very well and we got a lot of noise and grain in the images. The focusing mechanism is very accurate as well as fast. HDR photos looked superb while macro images also had some blur effect. Talking about the selfie camera, we get a 5 megapixel front-facing camera that can click moderately decent selfies. You can also use the built-in filters along with the beauty mode to enhance your selfies.

The camera app of the Xiaomi Mi A1 has an intuitive interface, which is very simple and easy to use. We get a lot of shooting modes in the stock camera app including a pro mode for photography enthusiasts. Although, most of the modes worked just fine but we feel the Auto Mode is the best since it performs perfectly in most lighting conditions. The primary shooters can record 4K videos while the selfie camera can shoot in Full HD. The video quality is good for both set of shooters. Overall, the Xiaomi Mi A1 has an incredible set of cameras at the back but the low light performance could have been better.

    remove Audio & Video

The machine drilled speaker holes of the Xiaomi Mi A1 are located at the right bottom. The loudspeaker is quite loud and the sound quality is also very good. There is no audio distortion even at the highest volume levels. Although, the sound will get blocked by your palm when you will be watching movies or playing games. We get a native music app along with Google Music and both of them have the necessary features to enjoy great music sessions. The phone does not come with a bundled pair of earphones and hence you should invest in a good pair if you already do not own one.

The Mi A1 can easily play both Full HD and 4K videos as the processor and display are capable enough for a smooth playback. The native video player is really good and hence you do not need any third-party video app as well. Overall, the Xiaomi Mi A1 provides a great audio and video experience for sure.

    remove Software & Ui

The Xiaomi Mi A1 smartphone runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS out of the box and has already gotten the Android 8.0 Oreo OS update. Being a part of the Android One program, the A1 does not run on Xiaomi's in-house MIUI and is the first Xiaomi smartphone to do so. However, we do get important customized features on top of stock Android. In terms of software, the experience is top-notch and can be termed to be one of the best in the business. The UI does not show any lag or frame drops in general day-to-day usage or while playing high-end apps or games. We get all the standard features such as split-screen multitasking, quick actions, Doze and more that are part of Android Oreo. There are a couple of pre-installed apps (bloatware) but you can easily uninstall them if you do not want to use them. If you're purchasing a Xiaomi phone for using MIUI, then you can even install it and give the interface a makeover.

Overall, the Xiaomi Mi A1 has an intuitive and fluid interface along with the latest Android OS.
