    Expert Review

Micromax Selfie 2 Note is a successor of the Selfie 2 and it was launched in India back in December 2017. As you can guess by its name, the Selfie 2 Note has a bigger display than the Selfie 2 and is overall a better smartphone than its predecessor. The USP of this phone is its 8 megapixel selfie camera along with decent overall hardware and software. So let us find our in our Micromax Selfie 2 Note review if it offers more than good selfies or not. However, do take a look at the specifications of the mobile first.

The Micromax Selfie 2 Note is powered by a MediaTek MT6737 quad-core processor, that comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory (expandable up to 32GB). The phone sports a 5.5-inch HD display and runs on Android 7.0 Nougat OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get a 13 megapixel rear camera along with a 8 megapixel selfie shooter. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. We get a fingerprint sensor at the back. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, gyroscope, ambient light and proximity sensor. Under the hood, there is a 3000mAh non-removable battery.

    remove Design & Display

The Micromax Selfie 2 Note is made up of polycarbonate but has a metallic look at the back. It looks quite premium and the build quality is very good. Micromax Informatics has done a good job in ensuring top-notch build quality of a budget smartphone. We get thick bezels on top and bottom of the display and hence it is quite big with a 5.5-inch display. Hence, it will be a struggle to use the phone with one hand for people with small hands. The Selfie 2 Note has an ergonomic design and holding the phone for long durations won't cause any damage to your hands. The edges are slightly curved and thus we get a good grip. The back cover has a metallic paint on it but it is not made up of metal.

Starting with the front side, there is a 5.5-inch display panel along with the selfie camera, earpiece, LED flash and couple of sensors. There are no capacitive buttons below the display as it comes with on-screen navigation buttons. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are located on the right side, while the left side remains clean. The 3.5mm audio jack sits at the top while the microUSB port and primary microphone are located at the bottom. Turning towards the back, we get the primary camera on the top middle, followed by the LED flash and fingerprint sensor below. The Micromax logo and the loudspeaker are seen at the bottom. Upon opening the back cover, there is a 3000mAh battery (non-removable) along with SIM card (micro) slots and a dedicated microSD card slot. Overall, the Micromax Selfie 2 Note has an ergonomic design and decent hardware.

The Micromax Selfie 2 Note rocks a 5.5-inch IPS display, which has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (HD). It is a generic display but the resolution is on the lower side as we get Full HD displays in this segment. The brightness levels are good, viewing angles are decent and sunlight legibility is moderately good as well. There is an ambient light sensor and hence you do not have to manually adjust the brightness depending upon your light surroundings. The texts, images and videos look quite crisp and vivid. You will love to consume a lot of high-definition content on this display and play a lot of games. The display is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass on top but the version has not been specified by the brand. Anyway, it does give adequate protection against daily wear and tear.

The touch response of the Selfie 2 Note is very smooth and lag-free mainly due to the good quality display, Gorilla Glass protection and fluid interface. Overall, the Micromax Selfie 2 Note has a good display but Full HD resolution would have made it better.

    remove Performance

The Micromax Selfie 2 Note is powered by a MediaTek MT6737 quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz along with 3GB RAM. It is a very basic, low-end chipset from the house of MediaTek and we get better in this segment but this is the most popular MediaTek processor in this range it can handle most of the day-to-day tasks easily. Most of the popular apps and games load up fairly quickly and we did not see any lag in them. When it comes to multitasking, you can perform some intense multitasking since we get 3GB RAM and it can easily handle more than five apps in the background simultaneously. In terms of gaming, most of the high-end games will run in medium settings with minimum lag while normal 3D will run at the highest graphics settings with no lag. The Selfie 2 Note has 32GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 25GB of free space. If you want more storage, you can definitely increase it up to 32GB by adding a microSD card. There is a fingerprint sensor at the back, which can unlock the phone very quickly and the sensor functions quite accurately.

Talking about connectivity, there is Dual SIM (nano) support along with a dedicated microSD card slot. On top of that there is 4G VoLTE support and both the SIM cards support it. The battery capacity of the Selfie 2 Note is 3000mAh and it is non-removable. There is no fast charging support but you will get almost one day of battery life with moderate usage.

Overall, the Micromax Selfie 2 Note is a good performer in most departments.

    remove Cameras

In the camera department, the Micromax Selfie 2 Note smartphone rocks a 13 megapixel primary camera at the back. It is a very basic camera but it can click good images in outdoors. In terms of picture quality, the color accuracy is on point and we got a lot of details in the images taken in daylight outdoor conditions. Although, in low lighting environments, the photos had some noise and details were scarce. The focusing mechanism is decently quick and is quite accurate most of the times. There is HDR mode and it is the best mode for capturing outdoor landscapes with great dynamic range. Macro shots looked good with decent amount of bokeh blur effect. Since the name of the phone is Selfie 2 Note, you must be thinking it has a good selfie camera and that is correct as well. We get a 8 megapixel selfie camera with LED flash and it can even click portrait images with shallow depth of field effect. There are a lot of filters along with beauty mode for enhancing the selfies.

The camera app of the Selfie 2 Note has a very simple and easy to use interface. There are a lot of shooting modes in the stock camera app and all of them works really well but if you're a novice photographer, then just use the Auto Mode for taking good images. Both the shooter can record Full HD videos and the quality is above average. Overall, the Micromax Selfie 2 Note comes with a good set of cameras but the selfie camera is better than the rear camera.

    remove Audio & Video

The machine drilled speaker holes of the Micromax Selfie 2 Note are located at the bottom on the back side. The sound quality of the loudspeaker is quite good and it is loud as well. There was no audio distortion even at the highest volume levels. Since the loudspeaker is placed on the back side, the audio gets muffled when the phone is kept on a flat surface. There is a default music player and it has all the necessary features for a good music experience. However, you can download an app like Saavn for streaming online and offline music.

The Selfie 2 Note can play both HD and Full HD videos easily but 4K videos might struggle at times because of low-end processor. For best video watching experience, do download a third-party app like MX Player. Also, do use a good pair of headphones for the best audio experience while playing games or watching videos since the bundled earphone is average in quality. Overall, the Micromax Selfie 2 Note gives a moderately good audio and video experience.

    remove Software & Ui

Out of the box, the Micromax Selfie 2 Note runs on Android 7.0 Nougat OS. Do not expect the phone to get updated to Oreo OS or later in the future as most budget smartphones do not get any major OS update ever. Here, you are getting an almost stock Android experience, which is much better than any custom OS for sure. The interface feels very fluid and smooth. Although, there were occasional lags and frame drops here and there but that is normal for most budget Android smartphones. We get all the important Nougat OS features such as Doze, Gestures and Themes. There are some pre-installed apps (bloatware) but if you do not want to use them and save up on some memory, you can just delete them. In case you do not like the look of this interface, then just download your preferred third-party theme to change the look.

Overall, the Micromax Selfie 2 Note has a fluid interface that is based on Android Nougat OS and it behaves mostly like stock Android.

    remove Conclusion

The Micromax Selfie 2 Note is a selfie-centric smartphone but it excels in most departments as well. It has a good build, ergonomic design, fluid Nougat interface, HD display, good selfie camera with a decent rear camera and good overall performance. In terms of cons, we do not get Full HD display, fast charging support and metal body, which are mostly standard in this segment. So if you want to purchase a selfie-focused smartphone, you can go for the Micromax Selfie 2 Note. In case you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the Lenovo K8 Plus, ASUS ZenFone 3 Laser and Panasonic Eluga Ray 700.
