    Expert Review

    remove Conclusion

The Nokia 3.1 is certainly not the best budget smartphone in the market but it has a few things going for it. The best thing about the Nokia 3.1 is its software. Since it comes with Android One branding, we get the latest stock Android OS along with guaranteed updates in the future. The display is good, battery life is decent and primary camera is also good. The overall performance is decent but the processor is low-end. There is no fingerprint sensor as well. So if you’re a die hard Nokia fan and need a budget smartphone, then only go for the Nokia 3.1. In case you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1, Honor 9N and Vivo Y81.

    removeIntroduction

HMD Global announced the new Nokia 3.1 Android One smartphone in India back in July 2018. It is a successor of the Nokia 3 launched back in 2017 and the main difference between the two is the Android One branding on the new one along with some other design improvements. It does not offer great specifications when compared to its counterparts. So let us check out the Nokia 3.1 Android One review in order to find out if you should purchase this smartphone or not. Although, do take a quick look at the specifications of the mobile below.

The Nokia 3.1 is powered by a MediaTek MT6750N octa-core processor, coupled with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal memory (expandable up to 128GB). The phone sports a 5.2-inch HD+ display and runs on Android 8.0 Oreo OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get a 13 megapixel primary rear camera and a 8 megapixel selfie shooter. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 LE and GPS. In the sensor department, we get a gyroscope, magnetometer, accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensor. Under the hood, there is a 2990mAh non-removable battery.

    remove Design & Display

The Nokia 3.1 comes with a polycarbonate back and aluminium sides with a dual diamond cut design. The build quality is good and the phone looks quite decent. However, it does lack the bezel-less design, which most of the budget and mid-ranged smartphones are sporting nowadays. It is a light phone and the weight is evenly distributed and thus the phone can be used for longer duration without feeling any pain in the hands. The credit goes to Nokia for maintaining a great build quality. The phone has slight round edges and the back cover has a dual diamond cut design which looks great.

On the front, we get a 5.2-inch display along with the selfie camera, earpiece, couple of sensors and Nokia branding. There are three on-screen buttons for navigation and thus we do not get any capacitive buttons below the display. However, we get a huge chin at the bottom. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are placed on the right side while the left side houses the slot for SIM and microSD cards. The primary microphone, microUSB port and loudspeaker are at the bottom while the 3.5mm audio jack sits at the top. Turning towards the back side, we get the secondary microphone, followed by the primary camera along with the LED flash inside an elongated circular enclosure. The Nokia branding is found in the middle along with Android One branding at the end. You cannot open the back cover but it houses a 2990mAh non-removable battery. Overall, the Nokia 3.1 has moderate good design along with decent hardware.

The Nokia 3.1 features a 5.2-inch IPS display, which comes with a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels (HD+). It is a good display with slim bezels on the sides but Full HD+ resolution is missing. The quality of the panel is good and the color reproduction is great. The brightness level and contrast ratio are good as well. The viewing angles and sunlight legibility are moderately decent. We also get an ambient light sensor and hence the brightness of the screen gets automatically adjusted according to the lighting surroundings. The size is also compact and hence it can be used with one hand easily. We get a Corning Gorilla Glass protection on top of the display and it does help in keeping the screen damage free from daily wear and tear. However, do not drop the phone to protect the screen from any physical damage. The touch response of the Nokia 3.1 is very smooth because of the 2.5D glass on top of the display and fluid interface. Overall, the Nokia 3.1 has a moderately good display for content consumption.

    remove Performance

The Nokia 3.1 is powered by a MediaTek MT6750N octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and 2GB RAM. It is a very basic low-end chipset from the house of MediaTek but it can perform most of the basic day-to-day tasks without any hiccups. The 2GB RAM provides a decent multitasking experience but it would have been better if it came with 3GB RAM. In general, the interface is lag free for the major part as we get a stock Android experience along with the latest security patches. In terms of gaming, you can play all the 3D games without any lag but most of the high-end games will struggle on this phone. The Nokia 3.1 has 16GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 9GB of free space. You can increase it up to 128GB by adding a microSD card as well. There is no fingerprint sensor on this device and that is very disappointing.

When it comes to connectivity, we get 4G VoLTE support. It is a Dual SIM phone and both the SIM slots supports 4G LTE but they do not work simultaneously. The battery capacity of the Nokia 3.1 is 2990mAh, which is obviously not on the higher side and hence you will get only one day of battery life with moderate usage. Also, there is no fast charging support.

Overall, the Nokia 3.1 is a decent performer and it could have been a lot better.

    remove Cameras

The Nokia 3.1 rocks a 13 megapixel primary camera at the back. The photos shot in bright outdoor lighting gets a lot of detail and the color saturation was also on point. Although, in low lighting conditions, the pictures had some amount of grain and noise but still they are better than most budget smartphone cameras. Thus, we would suggest you to use the LED flash in low light conditions or just shoot with ambient lighting. The focusing mechanism is moderately quick and accurate. Macro shots had some depth of field effect while HDR images had a good amount of dynamic range. However, dual primary cameras are also missing on this phone and hence you cannot click portrait images. Talking about the selfie camera, we get a 8 megapixel selfie shooter on the front. It is able to click good selfies.

The camera app of the Nokia 3.1 is very easy to use as the interface is clean and intuitive. There are a lot of shooting modes in the stock camera app but Auto Mode clicks the best images in most lighting conditions. The primary camera can shoot Full HD videos and the quality is quite good. Overall, the Nokia 3.1 comes with a good set of cameras but we miss out on dual rear cameras.

    remove Audio & Video

The two loudspeaker cutouts of the Nokia 3.1 are located at the right bottom of the device. They do sound quite loud and the audio quality is very good as well. There is no sound distortion even at the highest volume levels. Since the speaker is placed at the bottom, the audio obviously gets muffled when the phone is held while playing games or watching videos. Google Play Music app is the stock music player for the Nokia 3.1 and hence most of the features are available, however you can use other music apps for streaming your favorite songs as well.

The Nokia 3.1 can play both HD and Full HD videos smoothly but it will struggle with 4K videos because of the low-end processor. The native video player is good enough for watching videos and movies but you can download your favorite one. We get a bundled earphone with the phone and the quality is good. Overall, the Nokia 3.1 offers a decent audio and video output.

    remove Software & Ui

The Nokia 3.1 smartphone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo OS out of the box and the company has already mentioned that it will also receive couple of major OS (Android P) updates in the future as it comes with the Android One tag. This is an added advantage for the Nokia 3.1 since most budget and mid-ranged smartphones never get any major OS update. In terms of software, it is one of the best low-end smartphones for sure as we get a stock Android experience. The interface does not show any stuttering or frame drops in basic day-to-day usage. We get all the latest Android Oreo features and it is a delight for stock Android lovers. We get a couple of pre-installed apps (bloatware) but you can easily uninstall them if you do not want to use them. Although, if you are not a fan of stock Android then you can surely install a third-party theme of your choice to alter the design of the interface.

Overall, the Nokia 3.1 has a flawless interface and it is the best feature of this phone.
