    Expert Review

    removeIntroduction

HMD Global announced the Nokia 5.1 Plus in India back in September 2018. It is an upgraded version of the Nokia 5 launched back in 2017. The smartphone has a modern design language that also comes with a display notch. We also get dual camera setup at the back. This smartphone from Nokia also has an advantage in the software department as it comes with stock Android 8.1 Oreo OS and will be upgradable to Android 9.0 Pie. So let us find out in our Nokia 5.1 Plus review if you should purchase this phone or not. However, do check out the specifications of the mobile below.

The Nokia 5.1 Plus is powered by a MediaTek Helio P60 octa-core processor, coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory (expandable up to 400GB). The phone sports a 5.86-inch HD+ display and runs on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get a 13 megapixel primary rear camera along with a 2 megapixel secondary rear camera and a 8 megapixel selfie shooter. We get a fingerprint sensor at the back. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with Dual 4G VoLTE support.

Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band), Bluetooth 4.2 LE, USB Type-C and GPS. In the sensor department, we get a gyroscope, magnetometer, accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensor. Under the hood, there is a 3060mAh non-removable battery.

    remove Design & Display

The Nokia 5.1 Plus comes with a unibody metal design and it looks very premium since the phone is made up of 6000 series aluminium. The build quality is fantastic and the phone looks very good. It carries a modern design that has a bezel-less body along with a display notch. It is not the lightest phone around but the weight is evenly distributed and thus the phone can be used for longer duration without feeling any pain in the hands. The credit goes to Nokia for maintaining a great build quality. Since the Nokia 5.1 Plus is not the most compact smartphone as well, you might need to use two hands sometimes in order to use the phone to its full capacity. The phone has slight round edges and the back cover has a glossy finish. So we would suggest you to use a protective case to protect the device against any fall. On the front, we get a 5.86-inch display along with the selfie camera, earpiece and couple of sensors inside a notch. There are three on-screen buttons for navigation and thus we do not get any capacitive buttons. However, the Nokia branding is seen on the chin below the display. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are placed on the right side while the left side houses the hybrid slot for SIM and microSD cards. The loudspeakers, USB Type-C port and the primary microphone are at the bottom while the 3.5mm audio jack and secondary microphone are seen at the top. Turning towards the back side, we get the dual rear cameras and LED flash in a vertical circular enclosure. The fingerprint sensor is alligned below it, which is followed by the Nokia branding. You cannot open the back cover but it houses a 3060mAh non-removable battery. Overall, the Nokia 5.1 Plus has a stunning design and comes with capable hardware.

The Nokia 5.1 Plus features a 5.86-inch IPS display, which comes with a resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels (HD+). It is a modern bezel-less display that also comes with a notch on top. However, the resolution is on the lower side and Nokia could have given us a Full HD+ panel. Although, the quality of the panel is top-notch and the color reproduction is great. The brightness level and contrast ratio are good as well. The viewing angles and sunlight legibility are moderately decent. We also get an ambient light sensor and hence the brightness of the screen gets automatically adjusted according to the lighting surroundings. We get a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top of the display and it does help in keeping the screen damage free from daily wear and tear. However, do not drop the phone to protect the screen from any physical damage.

The touch response of the Nokia 5.1 Plus is very smooth because of the 2.5D glass on top of the display and fluid interface. Overall, the Nokia 5.1 Plus has a very good display but the resolution could have been better.

    remove Performance

The Nokia 5.1 Plus is powered by an octa-core MediaTek P60 processor clocked at 2GHz and 3GB RAM. It is a good mid-ranged chipset from the house of MediaTek and you can easily perform the basic day-to-day tasks without any hiccups. The 3GB RAM provides a lag-free multitasking experience and it can handle a lot of apps simultaneously. We would love to see a 4GB RAM variant of the same in the near future. In general, the interface is also lag free for the major part as we get a stock Android experience along with the latest security patches. In terms of gaming, you can play most of the high-end games without any lag but many of them can be played only in medium settings. The Nokia 5.1 Plus has 32GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 25GB of free space. You can increase it up to 400GB by adding a microSD card as well but you have to sacrifice on a SIM card as it comes with a hybrid slot. The fingerprint sensor at the back works flawlessly and the phone is also expected to get Face Unlock feature via OTA update in the near future.

When it comes to connectivity, we get 4G VoLTE support. It is a Dual SIM phone and both the SIM slots supports 4G LTE but they do not work simultaneously. The battery capacity of the Nokia 5.1 Plus is 3060mAh, which is obviously not on the higher side and hence you will get only one day of battery life with moderate usage. There is no fast charging support.

Overall, the Nokia 5.1 Plus is a good performer baring a few departments.

    remove Cameras

The Nokia 5.1 Plus rocks a dual lens setup at the back – a 13 megapixel primary camera and a 2 megapixel secondary camera. The photos shot in bright outdoor lighting gets a lot of detail and the color saturation was also on point. Although, in low lighting conditions, the pictures had some amount of grain and noise but still they are better than most budget smartphone cameras. Thus, we would suggest you to use the dual-tone LED flash in low light conditions or just shoot with ambient lighting. The second lens helps in clicking portrait images but it is not the best in class. The focusing mechanism is very fast and accurate because of PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus). Macro shots had a lot of depth of field effect while HDR images had a good amount of dynamic range. Talking about the selfie camera, we get a 8 megapixel selfie shooter on the front. It is able to click great selfies and because of the wide-angle lens, you can fit in a lot of people in the frame. Thus, you can click very good group selfies with the Nokia 5.1 Plus.

The camera app of the Nokia 5.1 Plus is very easy to use as the interface is simple and clean. There are a lot of shooting modes in the stock camera app but Auto Mode clicks the best images in most lighting conditions. Both the cameras can record Full HD videos and they are quite good in terms of quality. Overall, the Nokia 5.1 Plus has a good set of cameras on both sides.

    remove Audio & Video

The two loudspeaker cutouts of the Nokia 5.1 Plus are located at the left bottom of the device. They are quite loud and the audio quality is very good as well. There is no sound distortion even at the highest volume levels. Since the speaker is placed at the bottom, the audio obviously gets muffled when the mobile is held while playing games or watching videos. Google Play Music app is the stock music player for the Nokia 5.1 Plus and hence most of the features are available, however you can use other music apps for streaming your favorite songs as well.

The Nokia 5.1 Plus can play both Full HD and 4K videos smoothly because of the powerful processor and decent display. The native video player is good enough for watching videos and movies but you can download your favorite one. We get a bundled earphone with the phone and the quality is good. Overall, the Nokia 5.1 Plus offers a good audio and video playback.

    remove Software & Ui

The Nokia 5.1 Plus smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box and the company has already mentioned that it will also receive an Android 9.0 Pie update as it comes with the Android One tag. This is an added advantage for the Nokia 5.1 Plus since most budget and mid-ranged smartphones never get any major OS update. In terms of software, it is one of the best budget smartphones for sure as we get a stock Android experience. The interface does not show any stuttering or frame drops in basic day-to-day usage. We get all the latest Android Oreo features and it is a delight for stock Android lovers. We get a couple of pre-installed apps (bloatware) but you can easily delete them if you do not want to use them. Although, if you are not a fan of stock Android then you can surely install a third-party theme of your choice to alter the design of the interface.

Overall, the Nokia 5.1 Plus has one of the best interfaces in this segment.

    remove Conclusion

The Nokia 5.1 Plus is a beautiful budget smartphone from the house of HMD Global. It offers a good overall performance that includes stock Android OS with regular updates, good cameras and beautiful display. However, it lacks Full HD resolution, fast charging and dedicated microSD card slot. The battery life is decent. So if you want to purchase a modern budget smartphone from Nokia, then go for the Nokia 5.1 Plus. In case you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the Honor 9N, Redmi 6 Pro and Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1.
