    Expert Review

Nokia has been trying to straighten itself up with the release of Nokia 8 Sirocco last year, and the brand had been trying hard to dish out good mid-range phones. The phones that came last year did not make much noise, but they were not bad. Nokia 6.1 released in May, it was a great product in mid-range smartphone arena. It was almost like a high-end smartphone with mind-blowing design and specifications. Nokia 6.1 Plus is launched this August as a Flipkart exclusive and with a price tag of Rs 15,999, this phone offers a compelling design with solid performance. Nokia has given a facelift to this phone after Nokia 6.1 and has added all the right elements to create a robust smartphone.

HMD Global has been manufacturing Nokia phones under the brand and it is run by Nokia’s ex-employees. Nokia has spent time in designing this phone and it has a strong appeal because it makes a different statement unlike what you see around these days. The design here is a well-thought-out process and the phone stands out for its individuality and aesthetics. The good news is Nokia has put together all the features and specs of a good budget phone that will well serve your demands and expectations.

    remove Design & Display

Running Nokia 6.1 Plus is Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz. It is coupled with an Adreno 509 GPU and 4GB RAM. The combination is a competent one and is at par with what you should get in a budget phone. It is quite a powerful combo to ensure the phone runs buttery smooth. It measures 147.2 x 70.98 x 7.99 mm and weighs 151 grams. Coming to the design, as mentioned before, it is a classy design that is beautiful and has its own charm and pitfalls. The body is an aluminum frame which is covered in 90 percent glass although. Though it is a Gorilla Glass 3 and can withstand minor scratches and fall but in hand it is a delicate thing that needs care and an immediate case to guard.

At the back of the phone you will find the dual-lens camera that is housed in a compartment. Beside it sits the LED flash. Under the lens sits the fingerprint sensor with the Nokia logo in the middle. In the bottom you find the Android One logo. The volume rocker and lock button are located on the right edge and the single SIM and hybrid microSD card slot on the left. On the top is located the 3.5mm audio jack. On the bottom sits the USB Type-C charging port and microphone. The build is breathtaking in every sense. Nokia has always been famous for its sturdy phones and unusually charming designs. Nokia 6.1 Plus is a winner too in this scenario and you will love to hold it.

The phone has a whopping internal memory of 64GB which is expandable up to 400GB. It has a dual band WIFI support.

The 5.8-inch FHD+ IPS LCD display has a resolution of 2280 x 1080 with 432 pixels per inch with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The display is like any budget phone displays out there, there is just enough color brightness and saturation for the price you pay. Upon closer look there is not any pixelation. The brightness is right and most of the time not reflective under the sun. The touchscreen is smooth and you can navigate in a flutter.

    remove Performance

The non-removable 3,060mAh battery is a beast for this phone. The battery will last you through the day with basic operations as well as extensive use and you will be left with a little over 20 percent charge at the end of the day. According to Nokia the phone can be used for 9 hours of video playback and talk time up to 20.5 hours. It takes a little over 2 hours to charge fully up from zero and can run for more than 24 hours on average use. The phone comes with fast-charging option but does not have any wireless charging option. Fast charging comes handy when you need to boost-up your phone with few hours of charge but in much shorter time span. Nokia 6.1 Plus can handle both normal games and graphics intensive games alike like PUBG and Asphalt 9 with quality touch response and gyroscope. The appearance is sharp and intense as well as there is no lag time while playing these games and the phone runs smooth. Even when you play for long the phone does not have any heating issue. The phone performs well with good network connection and calls are clear and loud. It has a solid active noise cancellation which makes the task of having a conversation in a loud environment easy.

    remove Cameras

Nokia delivers a stunning and impressive camera in 6.1 Plus and perhaps it is the phone’s biggest USP. The phone has 16MP + 5MP rear camera and dual-LED flash. It is perhaps a good choice to not go for the dual lens rage all around, because frankly they don’t create mind blowing results and only adds up to the spec heavy chart. The rear camera supports 2160p video recording. It might sound quite hefty and mind-blowing but do not confuse this for a DSLR camera lens. The camera app is rather very simple with basic modes and operations. There is an excellent Live Bokeh mode and also one can add bokeh effect after taking shots. The effects are natural and robust unlike what you get in some other phones, where it is quite tacky and unconvincing. One can also adjust the blur in real-time. In daylight shots are fabulous with beautiful color capture, contrast and depth. The wild curves in the sides creates an obstacle tough to focus and trigger shutter as you end up touching the screen every time. Night shots are rather grim in this phone and I do not expect budget phones to perform like an iPhone X camera, so you better not nitpick. There is much noise and muddiness with less clarity and color saturation in night pictures. The results lack sharpness and are often blurred.

The selfie camera is an 16MP one with f/2.0 aperture and supports 1080p video recording. Selfie shots are fabulous too and one of the best compared to other cameras in similar priced phones. Videos captured in rear camera are good with nice sound quality. Videos are shot at 30 fps in 1080p resolution. The camera app does not have any enhancements or wide range of filters to choose from, which is quite a demanding factor for buyers these days. It is quite an underwhelming app in the face of bigger giants around. But the quality of pictures and the wide range of conditions it supports is comparable to high-end phones.

    remove Software & Ui

Nokia 6.1 Plus runs on Android One platform with Oreo 8.1.0 out of the box. This means it is a stock Android in true sense. Also, now you can upgrade it to Android Pie which has better ability to optimize RAM and power.

The Nokia 6.1 Plus is smooth to operate with one-hand. When you try to pull down the top notification shade it is smooth with one hand unlike what you get from Xiaomi, OnePlus, or LG phones. There are almost no shortcut options on Nokia 6.1 Plus, something which is likeable in Xiaomi handsets.

With an upgrade to Pie you get all the benefits of a latest and stable OS that does most of the things right.

    remove Conclusion

The wonderful thing about Nokia 6.1 Plus is that it is a true mid-range smartphone that lives up to the standards. There is no trade-off whatsoever and the phone performs seamlessly most of the time. The phone delivers quite a punch in most of the parameters. It has a powerful processor, enough RAM, a vanilla android experience with 24 months of software update and security support. It has one of the best cameras available with good shots in variable conditions unlike underperforming cameras in most budget phones. Nokia has got most things right with Nokia 6.1 Plus.
