HMD Global announced the new Nokia 6 Android One smartphone in India back in March 2018. It is a successor of the Nokia 6 launched back in 2017 and the main difference between the two is the Android One branding on the new one along with some other improvements. It is a solid mid-ranged smartphone but lacks the bezel-less design like other latest 2018 smartphones. However, the phone is very reliable and the main focus is on the primary rear camera. Let us check out the Nokia 6 (2018) review in order to find out if you should purchase this smartphone or give it is a miss. Although, first take a quick look at the specifications of the mobile below. The Nokia 6 (2018) is powered by a Snapdragon 630 octa-core processor, coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory (expandable up to 128GB). The phone sports a 5.5-inch Full HD display and runs on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get a 16 megapixel primary rear camera and a 8 megapixel selfie shooter. We get a fingerprint sensor at the back. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, NFC, USB Type-C and GPS. In the sensor department, we get a magnetometer, accelerometer and ambient light sensor. Under the hood, there is a 3000mAh non-removable battery with fast charging support.
The Nokia 6 comes with a unibody metal design and it looks very premium since the phone is made up of 6000 series aluminium. The build quality is fantastic and the phone looks very good. However, it does lack the bezel-less design, which most of the budget and mid-ranged smartphones are sporting nowadays. It is not the lightest phone around but the weight is evenly distributed and thus the phone can be used for longer duration without feeling any pain in the hands. The credit goes to Nokia for maintaining a great build quality. Since the Nokia 6 is not the most compact smartphone as well, you might need to use two hands sometimes in order to use the phone to its full capacity. The phone has slight round edges and the back cover has a slight textured finish for added grip.
On the front, we get a 5.5-inch display along with the selfie camera, earpiece and couple of sensors. There are three on-screen buttons for navigation and thus we do not get any capacitive buttons below the display. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are placed on the right side while the left side houses the hybrid slot for SIM and microSD cards. The loudspeakers, USB Type-C port and the primary microphone are at the bottom while the 3.5mm audio jack sits at the top. Turning towards the back side, we get the secondary microphone, followed by the primary camera along with the ZEISS branding and LED flash inside an elongated circular enclosure. The fingerprint sensor is found below it, which is followed by the Nokia branding in the middle along with Android One branding at the end. You cannot open the back cover but it houses a 3000mAh non-removable battery. Overall, the Nokia 6 (2018 Edition) comes with great hardware and superb aluminium body.
The Nokia 6 features a 5.5-inch IPS display, which comes with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD). It is a good display with standard Full HD resolution but bezel-less design is surely missing on this phone as most other devices in this segment now come with beautiful Full-Vision displays. The quality of the panel is top-notch and the color reproduction is great. The brightness level and contrast ratio are good as well. The viewing angles and sunlight legibility are moderately decent. We also get an ambient light sensor and hence the brightness of the screen gets automatically adjusted according to the lighting surroundings. We get a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top of the display and it does help in keeping the screen damage free from daily wear and tear. However, do not drop the phone to protect the screen from any physical damage.
The touch response of the Nokia 6 is very smooth because of the 2.5D glass on top of the display and fluid interface. Overall, the Nokia 6 (2018 Edition) has a very good display but misses out on bezel-less design for sure.
The Nokia 6 is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 630 processor clocked at 2.2GHz and 3GB RAM. It is a very good mid-ranged chipset from the house of Qualcomm and you can easily perform the basic day-to-day tasks without any hiccups. The 3GB RAM provides a lag-free multitasking experience and it can handle a lot of apps simultaneously. We would love to see a 4GB RAM variant of the same in the near future. In general, the interface is also lag free for the major part as we get a stock Android experience along with the latest security patches. In terms of gaming, you can play most of the high-end games without any lag but many of them can be played only in medium settings. The Nokia 6 has 32GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 25GB of free space. You can increase it up to 128GB by adding a microSD card as well but you have to sacrifice on a SIM card as it comes with a hybrid slot. The fingerprint sensor at the back works flawlessly and the phone is also expected to get Face Unlock feature via OTA update in the near future.
When it comes to connectivity, we get 4G VoLTE support. It is a Dual SIM phone and both the SIM slots supports 4G LTE but they do not work simultaneously. The battery capacity of the Nokia 6 is 3000mAh, which is obviously not on the higher side and hence you will get only one day of battery life with moderate usage. However, there is fast charging support and you can charge it from 0-50% in just 30 minutes. Although, charging from 0-100% will take more than one hour.
Overall, the Nokia 6 (2018 Edition) is a brilliant performer because of the overall optimization between hardware and software.
The Nokia 6 rocks a 16 megapixel primary camera at the back. The photos shot in bright outdoor lighting gets a lot of detail and the color saturation was also on point. Although, in low lighting conditions, the pictures had some amount of grain and noise but still they are better than most mid-ranged smartphone cameras. Thus, we would suggest you to use the dual-tone LED flash in low light conditions or just shoot with ambient lighting. The focusing mechanism is very fast and accurate because of PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus). Macro shots had a lot of depth of field effect while HDR images had a good amount of dynamic range. However, dual primary cameras are also missing on this phone and hence you cannot click great portrait images. Talking about the selfie camera, we get a 8 megapixel selfie shooter on the front. It is able to click great selfies and because of the wide-angle lens, you can fit in a lot of people in the frame. Thus, you can click very good group selfies with the Nokia 6.
The camera app of the Nokia 6 is super easy to use as the interface is clean and simple. There are a lot of shooting modes in the stock camera app but Auto Mode clicks the best images in most lighting conditions. Both the cameras can record Full HD videos and they are quite good in terms of quality. Overall, the Nokia 6 (2018 Edition) has one of the best cameras in its segment and it applies to both the primary and secondary cameras.
The two loudspeaker cutouts of the Nokia 6 are located at the left bottom of the device. They do sound quite loud and the audio quality is very good as well. There is no sound distortion even at the highest volume levels. Since the speaker is placed at the bottom, the audio obviously gets muffled when the phone is held while playing games or watching videos. Google Play Music app is the stock music player for the Nokia 6 and hence most of the features are available, however you can use other music apps for streaming your favorite songs as well.
The Nokia 6 can play both Full HD and 4K videos smoothly because of the powerful processor and high-resolution display. However, videos would have looked better on a bezel-less screen. The native video player is good enough for watching videos and movies but you can download your favorite one. We get a bundled earphone with the phone and the quality is very good. Overall, the Nokia 6 (2018) has a very good audio and video performance.
The Nokia 6 smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box and the company has already mentioned that it will also receive couple of major OS updates in the future as it comes with the Android One tag. This is an added advantage for the Nokia 6 since most budget and mid-ranged smartphones never get any major OS update. In terms of software, it is one of the best mid-ranged smartphones for sure as we get a stock Android experience. The interface does not show any stuttering or frame drops in basic day-to-day usage. We get all the latest Android Oreo features and it is a delight for stock Android lovers. We get a couple of pre-installed apps (bloatware) but you can easily uninstall them if you do not want to use them. Although, if you are not a fan of stock Android then you can surely install a third-party theme of your choice to alter the design of the interface.
Overall, the Nokia 6 (2018) has a very fluid and clean interface along with the latest Android OS.
The Nokia 6 (2018 Edition) is a very good smartphone but it does not offer a lot of value for money when it comes to the competition. It has a solid build quality, good display, superb interface with Android Oreo as base, good set of cameras and great overall performance. It misses out on few modern things such as bezel-less design and dual primary cameras. So if you are looking to purchase a Nokia smartphone from this segment, then go for the Nokia 6 (2018 Edition) without any doubt. In case you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the Redmi Note 5 Pro, Honor 7X and ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1.
