OnePlus 6T, a premium flagship smartphone, was launched in India back in October 2018. It is a successor of the OnePlus 6 that offers few changes. First of all, the notch has become a bit smaller. We lose out on the 3.5mm headphone jack but get a slightly better camera. However, the biggest differentiator is the in-display fingerprint on the 6T. So let us check out the OnePlus 6T review in order to find out if it is the best smartphone from the house of OnePlus yet. Do have a look at the specifications of the mobile first before checking out the full review.
The OnePlus 6T runs on OxygenOS 9.0 based on Android 9.0 Pie OS and is powered by a Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor and 6/8GB RAM. The phone boasts of a 6.41-inch Full HD+ display and packs in a 3700mAh battery under its hood with support for Dash Charge. There is 128/256GB of internal memory onboard but you cannot expand it further as it does not come with a microSD card slot. In the camera department, we get a 16 megapixel primary camera and a 20 megapixel secondary camera at the back while on the front, there is a 16 megapixel selfie shooter. We get an in-display fingerprint sensor. The 6T has 4G VoLTE connectivity along with Dual SIM support. Other options include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band), Bluetooth 5.0 LE, NFC, USB Type-C, GPS and GLONASS. The OnePlus 6T features a lot of sensors such as gyroscope, magnetometer, accelerometer, ambient light and proximity sensors.
The OnePlus 6T looks excellent and feels like a true flagship smartphone. The 6T has a beautiful metal and glass design. The build quality is phenomenal and it feels solid in hands. It has a tiny notch and a complete bezel-less full-screen display. It has a big display and hence you have to use both the hands to use the phone in most conditions. The edges are curved and thus it helps in providing a solid grip. The back is glossy and hence it is prone to fingerprints. We would suggest you to use a protective case to sheild its glossy shine.
Starting with the front side first, we get a 6.41-inch display along with the selfie camera, couple of sensors and earpieces inside a tiny notch. There are three on-screen capacitive buttons along with the in-display fingerprint sensor. At the bottom, we have the USB Type-C port in the middle, primary microphone in the left and loudspeaker on the right. The alert slider and power/lock button are located on the right while the volume rocker and SIM card tray are present on the left. Turning towards the back, we have the dual cameras sitting in a circular enclosure with the dual-tone LED flash in the top middle. It is followed by the OnePlus logo. The back cover is not removable and a 3700mAh battery sits beneath it. Overall, the OnePlus 6T looks excellent and comes with great hardware.
The OnePlus 6T rocks a 641-inch Optic AMOLED display that has a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels (Full HD+). It is a modern display with bezel-less design and a tiny notch cutout. Also, we already know that AMOLED displays are better than IPS displays so that 6T has an advantage over its peers. The display looks gorgeous and has crisp and vivid colors. The viewing angles are great and sunlight legibility is superb as well. The brightness levels are on the higher side and the display is meant for high-definition media consumption. You'll love to play games and watch movies on it. There is Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection on top of the display, which protects it from daily wear and tear. However, we would advice you to use a protective case with the phone to prevent it from any damages caused by drops.
The touch response of the 6T is very smooth and fluid. This is mainly because of the high quality display panel, Gorilla Glass 6 protection and lag free UI. Overall, the OnePlus 6T comes with a brilliant display.
The OnePlus 6T is powered by a Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor clocked at 2.8GHz along with 6/8GB RAM. This chipset from the house of Qualcomm is the flagship processor of 2018 and it churns out ultra premium performance. Thus, you can run all the apps and games without facing any lag or stuttering whatsoever. The day-to-day tasks seem very smooth and the UI also does not show any lag. The multitasking experience is also top-notch because of the 6GB and 8GB RAM variants and you can do heavy multitasking without breaking a sweat. The 6T comes with both 128GB and 256GB of internal memory, out of which around 110GB and 230GB of free space was available after first boot. It should be sufficient for any user and hence there is no option for expandable storage. The fingerprint scanner located under the display and it works quite well. However, it is a tad slower than the traditional fingerprint sensors located at the back. We also get Face Unlock feature and it can unlock the phone in just 0.4 seconds. It is not a certified water resistant smartphone but it has daily water-resistance protection.
Talking about connectivity, the OnePlus 6T supports Dual SIM (nano) and is of course 4G VoLTE enabled. Both the slots are 4G enabled and works simultaneously as well. There is a 3700mAh battery (non-removable) under the hood and it supports Dash Charge fast charging. You will get about one day of battery life with moderate to heavy usage but the 6T has one of the best fast charging technologies in any smartphone and hence you can charge it very quickly. Overall, the OnePlus 6T is an absolute beast of a performer.
The OnePlus 6T also comes with dual cameras at the back just like the OnePlus 6. We get a 16 megapixel primary sensor along with a 20 megapixel secondary sensor. There is OIS and EIS support. The images clicked in good outdoor lighting conditions are very good and they have a lot of detail and colors are also accurate. When it comes to the low light performance, it is quite good but the images have slight grain and noise. However, it is a lot better compared to other Android smartphones. The secondary lens takes very good portrait images and they look quite good in bad lighting environments as well. HDR images look very sharp and vivid. The focusing mechanism is super fast and accurate. Macro images also have a lot of depth of field and they look great. Coming to the front-facing camera, we get a 16 megapixel sensor and it can also capture great selfies.
The camera app of the OnePlus 6T is very easy to use as it has a simple user interface. We also get a lot of modes including a full-blown manual mode for pro photographers. However, we would suggest you to click in Auto mode with HDR on. The primary setup can shoot 4K videos at 60fps along with slow motion videos (480fps at 720p and 240fps at 1080p). The quality is very good and the selfie camera can shoot 1080p videos as well. Overall, the OnePlus 6T comes with a great set of cameras.
The machine drilled speaker holes of the OnePlus 6T are placed on the right bottom. We also get identical cutouts on the left side but they are just the microphone. So it is a missed oppurtunity as the 6T should have come with stereo speakers since most flagship smartphones do. However, the speaker sounds good and crisp. There is no audio distortion at the highest volume levels. The native app supports everything but you can download a third-party app like Saavn for streaming music. We get Dirac HD sound support. There is no 3.5mm audio jack and hence you have to depend on USB Type-C audio. OnePlus provides a dongle for using old earphones.
Talking about the video watching experience on OnePlus 6T, you can easily watch and stream any kind of content including 4K videos. Overall, the OnePlus 6T provides a very good audio and video experience but it misses out on stereo sound.
Out of the box, the OnePlus 6T runs on OxygenOS 9.0 based on Android 9.0 Pie OS. It is one of the first flagship Android phones to get the latest Android Pie from the house of Google. Also, OnePlus will provide the latest security patches and major Android OS updates in the future. The OxygenOS on top of Pie OS offers a lot of customizations. There are no visible UI lags and the overall performance is excellent. It has all the latest Pie features and the best ones include tap into gestures, adaptive battery management, adaptive brightness, improved notifications, native notch support, app actions and digital wellbeing. This gives a better overview of the interface. There are very less number of pre-loaded apps (bloatwares) but you can uninstall them if you do not need them. Also, if OxygenOS is not your thing and you would like a change, you can always download third-party themes according to your preferences. Overall, the OnePlus 6T has a super smooth interface based on Pie.
The OnePlus 6T is an excellent flagship smartphone. OnePlus has done a great job with their latest smartphone. From flagship killers to flagships, OnePlus has come a long way. The 6T has a beautiful design, great build, superb display and great overall performance. The camera department produces great images and the Dash Charge fast charging is lightning quick. However, it does not come with microSD card slot, stereo speakers and Quad HD resolution. So if you want to purchase a beast in this price range, go for the OnePlus 6T. In case you would want to check out the competition, then have a look at Samsung Galaxy A9, iPhone 7 and Vivo Nex.
