Oppo Mobiles had launched the A83 Pro in India back in March 2018. It is the successor of the A83 or you can say the 'Pro' variant of the A83, that was launched back in January. In terms of specifications, both of them are quite similar but the 'Pro' variant has more RAM and ROM. Otherwise, the A83 Pro is a mid-ranged budget smartphone with a Full-Screen display that looks very beautiful. It offers modern features such as Face Unlock but there is no fingerprint scanner on this phone. So let us find out in our Oppo A83 Pro review if it is worth a buy at this price or not. However, do take a quick look at the specifications of the mobile below. The Oppo A83 Pro is powered by a MediaTek Helio P23 octa-core processor, that runs ColorOS 3.2 based on Android 7.1 Nougat OS. The mobile features 4GB RAM, 64GB internal memory (expandable up to 256GB) and rocks a 5.7-inch HD+ display. In the camera department, we get a 13 megapixel rear shooter along with a 8 megapixel selfie camera. The phone has Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE, 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n (Dual Band), Bluetooth 4.2 LE, GPS and GLONASS. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, ambient light and proximity sensors. Under the hood, the A83 Pro packs in a 3180mAh non-removable battery.
The Oppo A83 Pro is a premium looking smartphone as it comes with a bezel-less design and is made up of metal. The build quality is great and it feels very good in hands. It is not very compact in size because of the 5.7-inch display but you can use it with one hand if you have big hands or else you need to use both your hands to use the phone properly. It is an ergonomic, modern design as it has minimal bezels on both top and bottom along with super slim bezels on the sides. The edges are circular and thus we get a strong grip. You can use the phone comfortably for longer period without causing any pain in your hands. The back cover has a metallic finish and thus we would advice you to use a back cover to protect your device as it tends to slip out.
Starting with the front of the Oppo A83 Pro, there is a 5.7-inch display panel along with the selfie camera, couple of sensors and earpiece. There are no capacitive buttons below the display as we get on-screen buttons for navigation. The volume up/down buttons are situated on the left side while the right side has the power/lock button and tray for SIM and microSD cards. The microUSB port, primary microphone, loudspeaker and the 3.5mm headphone jack are found at the bottom while the top houses the secondary microphone. Turning towards the back, we have the primary camera on the top left with LED flash on its right side. The Oppo brand logo is seen below it. Underneath the non-removable metal back cover, we get a 3180mAh battery (non-removable). Overall, the Oppo A83 Pro has a modern design along with standard hardware.
The Oppo A83 Pro rocks a 5.7-inch IPS display, which has a resolution of 1440 x 720 (HD+). It is a bezel-less display that looks very modern and immersive but the resolution is on the lower side and Oppo could have given a Full HD+ display at this price point. If we put the low resolution factor aside, then the display is quite good. The colors are accurate, brightness levels are quite good. The display is not the most compact but you can use it with one hand in most conditions as the bezel-less display makes the phone smaller in size. The texts, photos and videos look sharp but they would have looked even better in a Full HD+ panel. The viewing angles are good and sunlight legibility is decent as well. The immersive display is great for consuming content. There is no branded protection on top of the display but we get an extra layer of glass that saves it from daily wear and tear.
Coming to the touch response of the Oppo A83 Pro, it is very fluid and lag free and that is mainly due to the good quality display and smooth interface. Overall, the Oppo A83 Pro comes with a modern display but we would have really liked a Full HD+ panel.
The Oppo A83 Pro is being powered by a MediaTek Helio P23 octa-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz. It is quite a powerful processor from the house of MediaTek and it handles the general day-to-day tasks very well. There was no visible lag or stuttering. Most popular apps and games loaded up fairly quickly. There is 4GB RAM for performing intense multitasking. You'll have around 2.5GB of free RAM even after running more than 10 apps in the background. In terms of gaming, you can play most of the high-end games for sure but some of them will run in low or medium graphics settings. The Oppo A83 Pro comes with 64GB of internal storage, out of which we got around 52GB of free space. The storage can be extended externally by up to 128GB if you need extra storage and you'll most likely need it if you're a heavy user. There is no fingerprint sensor on this phone, just like the A83 and that is a big disappointment. However, you can unlock the phone using facial recognition and it works quickly and accurately as well.
Coming to the world of connectivity, we get both Dual SIM (nano) option along with 4G VoLTE support. Also, 4G is supported on both the SIM card slots and you can use them simultaneously. There is a 3180mAh battery (non-removable) under the hood, which is quite standard but there is no support for fast charging. You will get around one day of battery life with moderate usage.
Overall, the Oppo A83 Pro is a good performer in most of the departments.
In the Oppo A83 Pro smartphone, there is a 13 megapixel primary rear camera. It is a generic camera and you can click good images in daylight conditions. We got a lot of details and the color saturation was also neutral. The photos shot were vivid and sharp. However, the low light pictures clicked indoors had some amount of grain. The focusing mechanism was quite fast. HDR mode helps in taking great landscape pictures with a lot of dynamic range. Also, macro images looked quite good with shallow depth of field effect. Although, dual camera setup is missing on the Oppo A83 Pro. Talking about the front-facing camera, we get a 8 megapixel lens and it can take pretty good selfies like most other selfie cameras. However, the speciality of this camera is its A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) and thus the selfies are much better and more vibrant. The A.I. is able to select the best shot, best settings from a lot of combinations and hence you get the best output and it improves overtime. The camera app of the A83 Pro is very easy to use as it has a simple interface. The stock app offers various shooting modes including a pro mode and it is good enough for clicking and editing pictures and videos. The primary camera can shoot Full HD videos and the quality is quite good. Overall, the Oppo A83 Pro has a good set of cameras including A.I. mode for selfies but a dual camera setup is missing at the back.
The loudspeaker of the Oppo A83 Pro is located at the bottom left. The speaker sounds quite good and it is loud as well. There is no audio distortion even at the highest volume levels. However, while playing games or videos, sound will get blocked by your palms. There is a default music app that comes with the phone and it has most of the features that you will require for listening to music. Although, you can also download your favorite music app to replace the native player. A bundled earphone comes in the box but the quality is average, so you can purchase a good pair of earphones if you do not own one already.
The A83 Pro is able to play both Full HD and 4K videos quite easily as the display and processor are quite powerful. Again, the default video player app is not the best and thus you have to download a third-party video player like MX Player for the best possible video watching experience. Overall, the Oppo A83 Pro offers a standard audio and video experience.
The Oppo A83 Pro runs on Color OS 3.2 based on Android 7.1 Nougat OS out of the box. It is certainly an improvement over the Oppo smartphones launched couple of years back as they used to come with Android Lollipop. However, we are not expecting the A83 Pro to get updated to Android 8.0 Oreo OS or later in the future as most budget smartphones are deprived of it and Oppo does not have a good track record. Anyway talking about the interface, the Color OS mainly looks like iOS but offers great customization options. The icons and settings menu resemble iOS a lot. There are a lot of widgets, wallpapers, effects and themes. Thus, you can make some cosmetic changes according to your preferences to change the look of the interface. In terms of stability, the interface is very smooth and does not lag in general day-to-day usage. There is a Security Centre app that also includes a power manager, notifications disabler, data monitor and memory cleanup tool. The bezel-less design gets complimented with a lot of gestures and hence you can navigate around easily with gestures. There are some pre-installed apps (bloatware) but you can easily uninstall them if you do not want to use them. In case you do not like Color OS from the house of Oppo, then you can just download any third-party theme such as Pixel Launcher or Nova Launcher to get a different look.
Overall, the Oppo A83 Pro has a pretty sleek interface but it mostly looks like iOS.
The Oppo A83 Pro is a good mid-ranged smartphone but it has certain cons as well. To start with the cons, we do not get a fingerprint sensor and that might be a deal breaker for a lot of consumers. However, we get Face Unlock feature and it works quite well. Also, we do not get Full HD+ resolution and there is no fast charging support. Now coming to the pros, it has a bezel-less design along with a Full-Vision display. The interface is quite smooth and responsive. The overall performance is good and battery life is above average. The camera department is also good but dual camera setup is certainly missing. So if you want to purchase a Oppo smartphone in this price segment, then go for the Oppo A83 Pro. In case you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, Honor 7X and Moto G5S Plus.
