The Oppo R17 is a very beautiful smartphone from the outside and it is equally powerful from the inside. It has a stunning design, superb display, smooth interface and great overall performance. The battery life is good and we get support for fast charging. All the cameras are good but the selfie camera is better. So if you want to purchase a great flagship smartphone at the price of a mid-ranged device, then you can go for the Oppo R17. In case you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the Honor 10, Vivo NEX and OnePlus 6T.
Oppo R17, one of the latest flagship smartphones from the house of Oppo, was launched in India back in December 2018. It has an immersive design with a massive screen, that also comes with a waterdrop notch. The selfie-focused phone looks stunning as it comes with a gradient design. So let us check out the Oppo R17 review to find out if you should purchase this smartphone or skip it. Take a quick glance at the specifications of the mobile before diving into the review.
The Oppo R17 is powered by a Snapdragon 670octa-core processor, that runs ColorOS 5.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS. The mobile features 8GB RAM, 128GB internal memory and rocks a 6.4-inch Full HD+ display. In the camera department, we get a 16 megapixel primary shooter along with a 5 megapixel secondary camera at the back and a 25 megapixel selfie shooter on the front. The phone has Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE, 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band), Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C and GPS/GLONASS. There is an in-display fingerprint sensor. In the sensor section, we get an accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, ambient light and proximity sensors. Under the hood, the R17 packs in a 3500mAh non-removable battery with VOOC Flash charge.
The Oppo R17 is a very premium smartphone as it comes with a bezel-less design and is made up of metal and glass. The build quality is great and it feels very good in hands. It is not compact in size because of the 6.4-inch display but you can use it with one hand if you have big hands or else you need to use both your hands to use the phone properly. It is an ergonomic, modern design as it has minimal bezels at the bottom along with super slim bezels on the sides. The edges are circular and thus we get a strong grip. You can use the phone comfortably for longer period without causing any pain in your hands. The back has a gradient color design, which was made by advanced color processes.
Starting with the front of the Oppo R17, there is a 6.4-inch display panel along with the selfie camera, couple of sensors and earpiece inside the tiny notch. There are no capacitive buttons below the display as we get on-screen buttons for navigation. The volume up/down buttons are situated on the left side while the right side has the power/lock button and tray for SIM and microSD cards. The USB Type-C port, primary microphone, loudspeaker and the 3.5mm headphone jack are found at the bottom while the top houses the secondary microphone. Turning towards the back, we have the dual rear cameras and LED flash in the middle, which is followed by the Oppo brand logo. Underneath the non-removable glossy back, we get a 3500mAh battery (non-removable). Overall, the Oppo R17 has a beautiful design along with powerful hardware.
The Oppo R17 rocks a 6.4-inch AMOLED display, which has a resolution of 2280 x 1080 (Full HD+). It is a bezel-less display that looks very modern and immersive. The resolution is also on point. The colors are accurate, brightness levels are very good. The display is not the most compact but you can use it with one hand in most conditions as the bezel-less display makes the phone smaller in size. The texts, photos and videos look very sharp and vivid. The viewing angles are good and sunlight legibility is decent as well. The immersive display is great for consuming content. There is Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection on top of the display which saves it from daily wear and tear. The aspect ratio is 19:9 and most apps are optimized for it.
Coming to the touch response of the Oppo R17, it is very fluid and lag free and that is mainly due to the good quality display, smooth interface and Corning Gorilla Glass 6. Overall, the Oppo R17 has an immersive display that is ideal for high-definition gaming and content consumption.
The Oppo R17 is being powered by a Snapdragon 670 octa-core processor clocked at 2GHz. It is quite a powerful processor from the house of Qualcomm and it handles the general day-to-day tasks very well. There was no lag or stuttering. Most popular apps and games loaded up fairly quickly. There is 8GB RAM for performing very intense multitasking. You'll have around 5GB of free RAM even after running more than 15 apps in the background. In terms of gaming, you can play most of the high-end games for sure but some of them will run in medium graphics settings. The Oppo R17 comes with 128GB of internal storage, out of which we got around 110GB of free space. However, you cannot increase the storage as it lacks a microSD card slot. A fingerprint sensor is placed inside the display and it works fairly quickly and accurately. You can also use the Face Unlock feature using the front camera.
Coming to the world of connectivity, we get both Dual SIM (nano) option along with 4G VoLTE support. Also, 4G is supported on both the SIM card slots and you can use them simultaneously. There is a 3500mAh battery (non-removable) under the hood and it supports VOOC Flash charge fast charging. You will get around one day of battery life but a 5-minute charge will give you 2 hours of talk time.
Overall, the Oppo R17 is a beast of a performer.
In the Oppo R17 smartphone, there is a 16 megapixel primary camera along with a 5 megapixel secondary camera at the back. It is a good rear camera setup and you can click good images in daylight conditions. We got a lot of details and the color saturation was also neutral. The photos shot were vivid and sharp. However, the low light pictures clicked indoors had little grain. The focusing mechanism was fast. HDR mode helps in taking great landscape pictures with a lot of dynamic range. Also, macro images looked quite good with shallow depth of field effect. We get a 5 megapixel secondary lens for clicking portrait images and it does a pretty good job in optimal lighting conditions. Talking about the front-facing camera, we get a massive 25 megapixel lens and it can take very good selfies. However, the speciality of this camera is its A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) and thus the selfies are much better and more vibrant. The A.I. is able to select the best shot, best settings from a lot of combinations and hence you get the best output and it improves overtime.
The camera app of the R17 is very simple to use as it has a intuitive interface. The stock app offers various shooting modes including a pro mode and it is good enough for clicking and editing pictures and videos. Both the camera setups can shoot Full HD videos and they look good. Overall, the Oppo R17 comes with a good set of cameras but the selfie camera is better than the rear cameras.
The loudspeaker of the Oppo R17 is located at the bottom left. The speaker sounds quite good and it is loud as well. There is no audio distortion even at the highest volume levels. However, while playing games or videos, sound will get blocked by your palms. There is a default music app that comes with the phone and it has most of the features that you will require for listening to music. Although, you can also download your favorite music app to replace the native player. A bundled earphone comes in the box but the quality is average, so you can purchase a good pair of earphones if you do not own one already.
The R17 is able to play both Full HD and 4K videos quite easily as the display and processor are quite powerful. Again, the default video player app is not the best and thus you have to download a third-party video player for the best possible video watching experience. Overall, the Oppo R17 offers a good audio and video experience.
The Oppo R17 runs on Color OS 5.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box. It comes with one of the latest OS from the house of Google but we are not sure if Oppo will update it in the future. Anyway talking about the interface, the Color OS mainly looks like iOS but offers great customization options. The icons and settings menu resemble iOS a lot. There are a lot of widgets, wallpapers, effects and themes. Thus, you can make some cosmetic changes according to your preferences to change the look of the interface. In terms of stability, the interface is very smooth and does not lag in general day-to-day usage. There is a Security Centre app that also includes a power manager, notifications disabler, data monitor and memory cleanup tool. The bezel-less design gets complimented with a lot of gestures and hence you can navigate around easily with gestures. There are some pre-installed apps (bloatware) but you can easily delete them if you do not want to use them. In case you do not like Color OS from the house of Oppo, then you can just download any third-party theme such as Pixel Launcher or Nova Launcher to get a different look.
Overall, the Oppo R17 has a very smooth and stable interface.
