    Expert Review

Panasonic has several smartphones in its Eluga series which are mostly entry level to budget smartphones. Launched in December 2017 Eluga i9 is available exclusively from Flipkart for Rs 7,499. The handset has incorporated quite some features to rival other smartphones in this range. The phone comes packed with decent hardware and software features that mostly justifies its price tag. Panasonic Eluga i9 delivers some of the most desired features in this handset and with praiseworthy performance. This phone has some contemporary features like finger-print sensor and AI assistant which at this price is commendable. Eluga i9 is a good quality entry-level smartphone not just for seamless basic tasks but also for entertainment. If you are looking for smart looking and performing smartphones at a minimal cost, then Panasonic Eluga i9 could win your favor.

    remove Design & Display

The Panasonic Eluga i9 runs on 1.25 GHz Quadcore, Cortex A7, MediaTek MTK6737V chipset that is coupled with Mali T720 GPU and 3 GB RAM. Many prefer a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor over Media Tek because the former is believed to be superior in performance. But in reality, when you are looking for basic phones in this price range it hardly makes any difference. It measures 70.5 x 142.5 x 7.8 mm and weighs 143 grams. The handset is a 7 mm thick metal unibody design. Panasonic has added some serious zing to Eluga i9’s getup. The champagne gold colored 5-inch body is solid metal with a chic matte finish at the back. The touch and feel are premium and classy with shining silver bands on top and bottom of its rear. The near border screen ends with sleek curved edges and sits snugly in your hand. The light body is easy to operate with one hand. The back houses the camera, flash and finger-print sensor situated from top to bottom. The speaker grille is in the bottom of the back. The volume rocker is in the left edge with the power and sim tray on right. The bottom edge has the microphone and OTG support slot. The top edge has the USB 3.0 charging port and the 3.5 mm headphone jack. The front face has the selfie camera with sensors. The lower end of the screen has navigation buttons like home screen, back and toggle with backlit display. Eluga i9 has an internal memory of 32GB which is expandable up to 128GB with a microSD card. It has dual-sim support and the Sim 2 slot also functions as microSD card space. The phone supports Bluetooth and WiFi 802.11 b/g/n on 4.0 bandwidth. It is compatible with any GSM network provider and supports 4G/LTE and 4GVoLTE. The phone package also provides a screen guard, headphone jack and charging plug.

The Eluga i9 can win hearts for its attention towards design at this price which often is not the case with other brands. The sturdy design and premium touch is definitely a plus for this smartphone.

The 5-inch display has an HD resolution of 720 x 1280 IPS LCD at 294 pixels per inch. The screen is crisp and clear and the IPS LCD panel delivers enough pop to the display though some might prefer an OLED more, which is richer in appearance and costlier. The screen is not too reflective under direct sunlight and is bright enough in the dark. The screen is very finger-print intensive, meaning if you fondle the device for a while the screen gets finger impressions quite easily. Panasonic could have provided an oleophobic coating on its screen to prevent finger-print impressions so easily, which also tells us that it won’t be long before you will get scratches on the phone screen. The TFT capacitive touchscreen is to some extent seamless and functions smooth with negligible lag time. The Eluga i9 is impressive in its display, with good color saturation and clarity.

    remove Performance

The Panasonic Eluga i9 is fueled by 2,500 Li-ion mAH battery and it is good enough to let you run through the day with single charge and with moderate use you can well get through a day and half. The phone has a talk time capacity on up to 18 hours and standby time of 220 hours. It worked for a little over five hours with highest screen display and full-screen video streaming over LTE. The handset takes a little over one hour to charge from flat. It has an efficient battery life and with extended use there is no problem of it exhausting fast. Making and accepting calls is smooth with clear and loud voice quality. It has solid noise cancellation and having conversations in loud environments is not much of a problem. The voice quality might have a harsh tone, but it has overall clarity that one might need during calls. The phone has good download speed at 19 Mbps when you have good connection. The hardware has the ability to ensure a seamless software performance. The phone can handle basic operations including call, email, browsing, social networking, maps and messages. It obviously can manage low graphics games like Subway surfers, and Temple Run 2 which runs unflinchingly. Graphics intense games like High End 3, Warcraft plays will be difficult to play as the processor is not strong enough to ensure an intense game. The phone has good touch response and gyroscope. The appearance is sharp and intense as well as there is no lag time while playing these games and the phone runs smooth.

    remove Cameras

Panasonic Eluga i9 has pretty well-functioning camera with 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera. The primary camera has 5P Lens Element with F2.2 Aperture. There are several shooting modes like HDR, Face Beauty, Burst Shot, Night, Professional, Watermark, and Panorama. The camera can shoot video up to 1080p resolution with good audio clarity and volume in H.263, H.264, MPEG4 formats. The front camera too can record full-HD videos. The front camera too has features like Element Lens 3P, Aperture f2.4, and shooting modes like Beauty Mode, HDR, Burst, and Watermark. All these features create very nifty results and are smooth functioning. The picture has considerable details and vivid color capture, something not always usual in entry-level smartphones. The pictures are surprisingly good with less noise. In dim light the results can vary though, and the shots tend to get muddy and lose color depth. The finger-print sensor is useful to take selfies. This feature comes in very handy when you have your arms stretched and trying to take selfie shots. The function is seamless. Overall, Eluga i9 has a good performing camera with decent shots.

    remove Software & Ui

The phone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with light skin on top that has almost minimal to zero tweak. The stock Android is good enough for smooth user experience. The phone comes with a couple of pre-installed apps which you can disable, or force stop and make room for your own favorite applications. Out of 32 GB you get approximately 24 GB of effective memory space and 2.1 GB of RAM space out of 3 GB. The hardware has the ability to ensure a seamless software performance with a dozen apps installed. The phone has engaging gaming experience considering its price and specifications. Compared to my experience with other phones in this price range Panasonic Eluga i9 does a commendable job. Basic games like Subway surfers, Temple Run 2 runs good with vivid colors and enough sound. Graphics intense games like High End 3, Warcraft plays really well with good touch response and gyroscope. There is no lag time while playing these games and the phone runs smooth.

Another interesting software feature is Arbo which is Panasonic’s AI assistant. You can save your location for Arbo performance, predict your calls smartly, predict your settings and app usage. Arbo learns from your phone usage and predict your activities accordingly, functioning like a personal friend. This software is powered by machine learning that learns, grows and improves with your phone usage. Suppose you are in a meeting then Arbo itself will que you to put your phone in silent mode, or if are used to making certain calls at certain times then Arbo take snote of your calling patterns and reminds you to do that duly. You also get prompts from Arbo for setting changes with its ‘location identification’ feature. It recognizes your usual location and sends out prompts to alter your settings. It is an innovative app and is fun and useful at the same time.

    remove Conclusion

Panasonic Eluga i9 is a winner in terms of good hardware specs and configurations in this price tag. The solid design and out of the box Android Nougat is a boon and the 3GB RAM has meat enough to get loaded up on memory and enable a seamless performance. In this price range Eluga i9 can be an option for you and this phone will serve you well with a good battery life.
