The very first smartphone brought great success and popularity to Realme making the young manufacturer the emerging smartphone brand for the year. The newest smartphone from the house of Realme, in their new U-series specially designed for the youth, created quite a buzz. Unveiled in late November, the Realme U1 sports the first-ever MediaTek Helio P70 chipset for any smartphone. The U-series is wholly dedicated to youth’s selfie-centric needs and that is what makes Realme U1 India’s SelfiePro with a 25MP Sony IMX576 selfie camera. Just like the Realme 2 Pro, the U1 also flaunts a 6.3-inch FHD+ display with a dewdrop notch. Juicing up the device for a whole day, is a 3,500 mAh battery with AI Power Master. The Realme U1 comes in two storage variants - 3GB RAM with 32GB storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB inbuilt storage. Inside the box, you get a Realme U1, a 5V/2A standard power adapter, a microUSB data syncing cable, a quick start guide, a SIM tray ejector tool, some information booklet with warranty card, a pre-applied Screen Protect Film, and a flexible decent silicon case. Available in three stunning colours - Ambitious Black, Fiery Gold, and Brave Blue, the Realme U1 is up for purchase on Amazon.in starting at Rs 11,999. Is it worth your bucks or should you skip clicking the “Buy Now” button? Let’s find out.
Realme U1 surely feels premium in hand with its transparent laminated plastic at the rear which looks and feels like glass. The rear plastic panel is definitely glossy which is not only a fingerprint magnet but is also prone to scratches. The left edge of the U1 carries a triple-slot SIM tray along with the volume rockers while the power button is located on the right edge of the device. The buttons can be conveniently reached even if the smartphone is held with only one hand. The back panel, though plastic, has passed through a 13-layer laminated technology which makes it feel really premium to look at, all thanks to its light pillar design. The bottom of the device holds the speaker holes, a microUSB port, microphone, and 3.5mm headphone jack. Over at the back, is a dual rear camera setup horizontally stacked and the fingerprint sensor is perfectly placed that the finger can reach out to it accurately and conveniently.
At the front, is a 6.3-inch FHD+ LTPS IPS display panel with a dewdrop notch which houses the front camera, the light sensor, the proximity sensor, and the earpiece. No doubt, the display is stunning and the colour reproduction is accurate but you will definitely struggle to look at it in bright sunlight. The screen is bigger enough that it will indulge you in an all-in-all immersive visual experience, all thanks to the tiny notch. Though the display is somewhat raised above from the body, you will never feel any rough edges. The dual 2.5D design all over the Realme U1 lends it a comfortable grip with rounded edges. The dewdrop notch design has let the screen get some more space, thus, giving it a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, a 90.8% screen-to-body ratio, and a pixel density of 409 ppi. The screen should be somewhat resistant to scratches as the display panel is protected by a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
Powering the Realme U1 is the MediaTek Helio P70 chipset which is clocked up to 2.1GHz with four ARM Cortex A73 and four ARM Cortex A53 chips, coupled with ARM Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. The Helio P70 SoC is much more power efficient and a better performer than Realme 2 Pro, which ran on an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 AIE chipset. That’s not all, the Artificial Intelligence processing unit (or APU) somewhat boosts up the performance of the device. Realme U1 comes in two variants - 3GB RAM with 32GB storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB storage. One issue that we faced with the storage is that on the 32GB variant, we got only 21GB of usable storage. The storage is further expandable using the dedicated microSD card slot which accepts a card up to 256GB. App launch time on the Realme U1 is snappy, and even the loading speed for apps is pretty quick which means it will handle daily tasks with ease. Gaming is another aspect where Realme U1 managed to perform well with flying colours. PUBG Mobile is one heavy and most popular game that has now become the primary criteria for testing a smartphone’s performance. The game was set on medium graphics on the Realme U1 by default and there were no noticeable lags or frame drops, all thanks to the effective game optimization that stabilizes the frame rates to 60 fps. The Helio P70 handles gaming quite well on the device with the nimble and powerful AI Master P70 chipset that is based on a 12nm FinFET process with CorePilot 4.0 that provides it a class-leading performance along with power-efficiency.
The first smartphone from the U lineup from Realme, the U1 packs a bunch of sensors including the M-sensor, gravity sensor, acceleration sensor, light and proximity sensors, and a rear fingerprint sensor. Connectivity options on the Realme U1 includes Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS/ GLONASS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, dual Nano-SIM, dedicated microSD slot, and a microUSB port. The dual SIMs on the Realme U1 support dual 4G VoLTE and good internet speeds on the telecom network.
Over at the front, is where the magic begins. You get a flagship-level 25MP Sony IMX576 sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The AI Beauty+ feature at the front camera improves selfies by a huge margin, recognizing 296 facial points. It is capable of shooting Smarter Groupfies that focuses on all the faces and blurs the background in depth mode. Not only that, the selfie camera is capable of shooting pictures with great brightness levels. Of the many features, the 25MP AI camera includes Night Shot Brightness, Back Light Clarity, and Studio Quality Portrait Lighting which consists of Natural Light, Film Light, Mono-tone Light, Rim Light, and Bicolor Light options. The dual rear cameras on the Realme U1 consist of a primary 13MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a secondary 2MP sensor with f/2.4 aperture, alongside an LED flash light. Honestly, the rear cameras are not so good, they deliver decent pictures that too in good lighting conditions. Bright outdoor shots are sharp, contrast and colour reproduction is pretty good in such pictures. Except that, the rear cameras supports Bokeh Effects in pictures, Slow Motion Video recording, and Super Vivid 2.0 feature with HDR for colorful pictures.
Talking about the front camera, we noticed that the facial unlock feature is fast enough and unlocks the device even in really dark conditions and that’s impressive. This really coincides with the claims of the company which states that the AI Face Unlock feature can unlock the Realme U1 in just 0.1 seconds. The front 25MP AI camera lets you beautify multiple people in a single shot, which is really one awesome feature to go for.
Realme U1 packs a 3,500 mAh battery which performs pretty impressive as compared to smartphones that pack a 4,000 mAh battery. On our test, the battery lasted more than 18 hours on a single charge even on heavy usage and full brightness, with up to 12 hours of screen-on time. Though you get a microUSB port, but even the charging time will not let you down with the 5V 2A standard wall charger. The included power adapter charges the device in around 2 hours from flat to 100 percent. Not too fast, but a decent charging time for a 3,500 mAh battery and Realme is in no mood to introduce fast charging for their smartphones in the near future.
Running Oppo’s ColorOS 5.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo, the Realme U1 is smoother because of system optimizations made under the hood which makes the whole UI snappy and fast. Though the user interface is not as user friendly as Xiaomi’s MIUI, gesture navigation will let you enjoy a seamless transition through the phone. The icons and the transitions look like just another Chinese smartphone. One thing that we would like to state is that as Realme has separated itself from Oppo, it should also think of some changes in the UI or should incorporate its own UI in its smartphones, one which is user friendly and not merely a copy of any other user interface. If that’s not possible for Realme, it should definitely switch over to stock Android experience which is a better and user friendly UI for any smartphone.
For us, the Realme U1 wins this price segment in terms of gaming, performance, selfies and the budget itself. Realme U1 surely performs better than most of its counterparts at this price point, thanks to the latest MediaTek Helio P70 chipset. Realme have really done some great optimizations under the hood, which makes the Realme U1 worth buying if you are a selfie lover and don’t want to compromise on the performance part either. The light pillar design is something that speaks for itself, though it too has some pros and cons of itself but keeping those aside, this is one good deal to grab under Rs 15,000. We would suggest you to go for the 64GB storage variant, priced at Rs 14,999, so that you get some space for apps and files. Settling for the 32GB variant, available at Rs 11,999, will only give you usable space of just 21GB as the OS and UI takes up most of the space.
