The Redmi Note 5 Pro from the house of Xiaomi is a wonderful smartphone from every aspect. It belongs to the mid-ranged budget segment and excels in most departments. We get a gorgeous display along with a beautiful design. The overall performance is very good, there are great set of cameras and the interface is also smooth. The two-day battery is phenomenal as well but Xiaomi does not supply a fast charging adapter in the box. However, it lacks a dedicated microSD card slot. Also, there is no USB Type-C port and NFC. You can surely purchase the Redmi Note 5 Pro if you're looking for a great smartphone. However, you can also check out the Honor 7X, Honor 9 Lite or Redmi Note 5.
Xiaomi had announced the Redmi Note 5 Pro in India back in February 2018. It belongs to the Redmi Note 5 series but is not exactly a successor of the Redmi Note 4. This is an ideal successor of the Mi A1 because of the dual rear cameras and relatively high-end specifications but we do not get stock Android in this one. The Redmi Note 5 Pro is definitely a power packed phone as the higher variant comes with 6GB RAM. It has a stunning bezel-less design along with a beautiful display. So let us take a look at the Redmi Note 5 Pro review in order to find out if it's the best smartphone in this segment or not. However, do check out the specifications of the phone below before digging into the full review.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor, coupled with both 4GB/6GB RAM and 64GB internal memory (expandable up to 128GB). The phone sports a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display and runs on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get a 12 megapixel primary rear camera along with a 5 megapixel secondary rear camera and a 20 megapixel selfie shooter on the front. A fingerprint sensor is located at the back. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band), Bluetooth 5.0, IR blaster, GPS + GLONASS. In the sensor department, we get an accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity and ambient light sensor. Under the hood, there is a 4000mAh non-removable battery with Quick Charge 2.0 support.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro belongs to the bezel-less budget smartphone generation and absolutely looks stunning. The build quality is solid and the phone feels very premium. Despite of having a big display, the phone does not feel too big. However, it would be difficult to use the phone with one hand all the time since the phone is quite tall. The Note 5 Pro looks very sharp and elegant because of the 2.5D curved glass and minimalistic bezel-less design. It weighs 181 grams and is 8.05mm thick. So, it is quite bulky but the overall weight is evenly distributed and hence you will get used to it over a period of time. The edges are slightly curved. The metal back has a matte finish but it still feels a bit slippery. Xiaomi has done a good job by including a free clear protective case with the phone.
On the front, we get a 5.99-inch display along with the selfie camera, LED flash, earpiece and couple of sensors. There are three on-screen touch buttons for navigation. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are placed on the right side while the left side houses the hybrid slot for SIM and microSD card sits. The 3.5mm audio jack, primary microphone, microUSB port and loudspeaker are found at the bottom while the IR blaster and secondary microphone are found at the top. Turning towards the back side, the dual rear cameras along with the LED flash are found on the top left in a vertical position. The fingerprint sensor is found in the middle, followed by the Mi branding at the bottom. The back cover is not removable but a 4000mAh battery sits underneath it. Overall, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has an ergonomic, modern design along with great hardware.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro features a 5.99-inch IPS display, which comes with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels (Full HD+). It is a 18:9 bezel-less Full-Screen display like most modern budget displays and it looks absolutely beautiful. It is an ideal display for playing games, viewing pictures and documents and watching movies. It is very sharp and vivid. The brightness and contrast levels are very good. The colors are on the neutral side and the saturation is on point as well. The viewing angles are very good and sunlight legibility is decent as well. We get 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top of the display and it really helps in protecting the screen from daily wear and tear but do not expect it to protect it from any drops.
The touch response of the Redmi Note 5 is very smooth and lag-free. It is mainly due to the good quality display, 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection and fluid interface. Overall, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has a gorgeous display that looks very modern and is definitely one of the best in its segment if not the best.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz. It is the latest mid-ranged processor from the house of Qualcomm, that is able to handle all the basic day-to-day tasks along with sophisticated and complicated tasks. Also, it is currently the best chipset that you can get in this price segment for sure. The multitasking experience is very smooth and you can easily run more than ten apps simultaneously in the background without facing any lag or frame drops since we get options of both 4GB and 6GB RAM. In case you're a heavy user, you can go with the 6GB RAM variant or else 4GB RAM variant is enough for most users. Most popular apps and games load up very quickly and they do not show any stuttering. In terms of gaming, you can play most of the games at the highest settings but some of the high-end ones might run at medium settings. The Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with 64GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 55GB of free space. If you want more space, then you can increase it up to 128GB by adding a microSD card but you will have to sacrifice a SIM car since it comes with a hybrid slot. There is a fingerprint sensor at the back and it can unlock the phone very quickly. We also get Face Unlock option and it works quite well.
Talking about connectivity, there is 4G VoLTE support. It is a Dual SIM phone (nano) and both of them supports 4G simultaneously. The battery capacity of the Redmi Note 5 Pro is 4000mAh and it supports Quick Charge 2.0 fast charging technology but it seems the fast charging adapter is not included in the package. Thus, you will have to purchase a compatible adapter to take advantage of fast charging. You will easily get around two days of battery life with moderate usage. Overall, the Redmi Note 5 Pro offers great performance and is probably the best in its category.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro boasts of a dual camera setup at the back - a 12 megapixel primary camera and a 5 megapixel secondary camera. The primary lens takes stunning pictures with a lot of detail in bright outdoor conditions. The photos looked very sharp and vivid along with a natural color tone. The secondary lens helped in clicking portrait images as it captures depth of field information. The portrait mode of the Note 5 Pro is certainly more polished than the Mi A1. When it comes to low light photography, there is some amount of noise but it is manageable. The focusing mechanism is very accurate as well as fast. HDR photos looked superb while macro images also had some blur effect. Talking about the selfie camera, there is a massive 20 megapixel front-facing camera with selfie flash and it can take stunning selfies. You can click A.I. based portrait selfies. They are not perfect but will get better with more OTA updates in the future.
The camera app of the Redmi Note 5 Pro has a sophisticated interface but it is very simple and easy to use. There are a lot of shooting modes in the stock camera app including a pro mode for photography enthusiasts. All the modes are good for experimenting but if you're not sure about them then always use the Auto Mode for getting the best results. Both the rear and front cameras can shoot Full HD videos and the quality is good but 4K video recording is missing. Overall, the Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a great set of cameras and they are one of the best in their segment.
The machine drilled speaker holes of the Redmi Note 5 Pro are located at the right bottom. The volume of the speaker is quite loud and the sound quality is also good. There is no audio distortion even at the highest volume levels. Although, the sound will get blocked by your palm when you will be watching movies or playing games. There is a native music app along with Google Music and both of them have the necessary features for enjoying good music. The phone does not come with a bundled earphone and hence you should purchase a good pair if you already do not own one.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro can easily play both Full HD and 4K videos as the processor and display are capable enough for a smooth playback. The native video player is also good enough and hence you do not need any third-party video app as well. Overall, the audio and video playback of the Redmi Note 5 Pro is very good.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro runs on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS out of the box and will get Android 8.0 Oreo OS update in the near future. Unlike other budget smartphone brands, Xiaomi is known for updating their budget devices but sometimes they take time. However, be rest assured that you will receive major OS updates from both MIUI and Android in the future. In terms of software, the experience is top-notch and can be termed to be one of the best in the business when it comes with custom ROMs. The UI does not show any lag or frame drops in general day-to-day usage or while playing high-end apps or games. We get all the standard features such as split-screen multitasking, quick actions, Doze and more that are part of Android Nougat and Oreo since MIUI offers a lot of customization. Thus, the base Android variant does not matter much as MIUI is always getting updated with the latest Android features. There are a couple of pre-installed apps (bloatware) but you can easily uninstall them if you do not want to use them. If you do not like the look and feel of MIUI, then you can always install a third-party theme such as Pixel Launcher or Nova Launcher to get your preferred look.
Overall, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has a smooth interface that offers a lot of features.
