    removeIntroduction

Samsung is one such brand in India that enjoys unprecedented craze among the masses in India both online and offline. Even though the company ruled the smartphone segment in India for years, it is slowly losing its stand to other Chinese brands. The only thing that never changes is that the company never stopped launching phones giving options to consumers who continuously look out for refreshing new designs and products. With the same goal in mind, the company recently introduced the Galaxy J6 in the very famous J-series. Apart from the regular internals, the design stands out with an 18:5:9 aspect slim bezel display. Let’s take a close look and see how the phone fares in real life.

The Samsung Galaxy J6 sports a 5.6-inch (1480 x 720 pixels) HD+ Super AMOLED 18.5: 9 Infinity 2.5D curved glass display. It is powered by the Exynos 7870 14nm SoC clocked at 1.6GHz Octa-Core processor with Mali T830 GPU. It packs 3GB RAM with 32GB storage / 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage, that is expandable up to 256GB with microSD. It runs on Android Android 8.0 Oreo with Experience U.I on top.

In terms of camera, the J6 features a 13MP rear camera with LED flash, f/1.9 aperture and an 8MP front-facing camera with LED flash, f/1.9 aperture. It packs a fingerprint sensor for extra security. Connectivity features include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, GPS. A 3000mAh battery is on board.

    remove Design & Display

The Galaxy J6 packs a regular candy bar design, but after years of complaints regarding the build qualities of the budget segment Samsung phones, the company seems to have learned a lesson or two. The Galaxy J6 packs an all-metal unibody design that fits perfectly in hands. Since the aspect ratio is now modern, it is slim and tall, so it doesn’t hurt your hands even after extended usage. Though we see phones with 6-inches display, Samsung maturely stuck to a middle ground at 5.7-inch which makes it easy to reach all corners of the screen without any issue. The edges are rounded which makes up for the perfect grip.

Moving to placements, up front we have the 8MP front-facing camera, LED flash, the usual set of sensors, and the capacitive buttons are placed within the display. The volume rockers, SIM tray including a slot of microSD card are present on the left, while the power button along with speaker vent is placed on the right side. The microUSB port and 3.5mm audio jack are present on the bottom.

There is nothing on the top. The rear is where you find the 13MP rear camera, LED flash, fingerprint sensor, Samsung branding. The back is sealed, so the battery isn’t removable. Overall, the build quality and design of the Honor 7A is impressive.

The Samsung Galaxy J6 (2018) sports a 5.6-inch (1480 x 720 pixels) HD+ Super AMOLED 18.5: 9 Infinity 2.5D curved glass display. With 1080p panels becoming a norm these days, it is strange to see Samsung use a 720p panel which makes all the difference. However, since it is an AMOLED panel, the colors are perfectly balanced. The blacks are pitch black, and the whites are plain white with no hint of yellow. It also has an auto-brightness sensor, so you can enable it to adjust the brightness depending on the ambient lighting. The viewing angles are perfect, and we didn’t notice any color shift while tilting.

The touch response is smooth, and the never had any freezing while scrolling. But since it is a 720p panel, it still results in slight pixilation while tilting or viewing from extreme angles. We wish Samsung had gone with the 1080p AMOLED panel which would have given the phone a significant boost in the competitive price segment. Overall, the display of the Galaxy J6 might not be the best in the section but can suffice the need.

    remove Performance

The Samsung Galaxy J6 is powered by the Exynos 7870 14nm SoC clocked at 1.6GHz Octa-Core processor with Mali T830 GPU. The Exynos 7870 is not the most power or the latest chipset in the market; this really affects the performance of the device. Apps open quickly, but they do take a fair amount of time to load and become functional. It can run pretty much every app you throw at it, but the functioning isn’t the smoothest we have seen, it becomes unresponsive and laggy at times if you continuously use the phone for a while. Most essential apps like dialer, messages, browsing run butter smooth. But as I mentioned above, the performance drops drastically once you start using the phone heavily. With many Qualcomm chipsets in the market that can outshine the Exynos 7870, it is sad to see Samsung sticking to the age-old chipset even in 2018.

In terms of gaming, we played games like Asphalt 8, PUBG, Nova 3, Leos Fortune, Riptide GP 2 and more. Though the gameplay was the not the best when graphics set to high, it was able to pull off with medium level graphics. There is a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, and it works perfectly. You can register up to five fingers. Overall, the performance of the Galaxy J6 is mediocre at best.

    remove Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy J6 packs a 13MP rear camera with LED flash, f/1.9 aperture and an 8MP front-facing camera with LED flash, f/1.9 aperture. The camera interface is very familiar if you have used Samsung phones in the past. There are toggles for HDR, front camera, video mode, Pro mode, and more sitting right in front of the home screen. The rear camera can click decent images given the excellent lighting conditions. It captures reasonably decent details and colors. There were no dull moments in the pictures, and the HDR mode brightens the image furthermore.

The dynamic range is decent, but slight zooming in results in noise which makes the image look artificial. Moving to low-light captures, while the pictures look good overall, zooming in or viewing in big screen brings out the true nature of the pictures. They are noisy and grainy which makes them unusable even for social sharing. The LED does help in brightening the surrounding for the image to look good, but it tends to become overpowering which is yet another let-down.

Moving to the front camera, there is just an 8MP sensor which does a fair job of clicking selfies. These photos can be directly shared on social media like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp using the social share feature. The rear camera can record 1080p videos, and the quality of the video is acceptable.

    remove Audio & Video

The company has bundled a pair of earphones within the box, and they are of basic quality and not in-ear style. So if you are an audio buff, you will have to shell out some more bucks on a pair of good quality earphones for a better audio experience. The speaker is placed on the right side, so you won’t easily block it unless you are holding the phone in landscape mode. The default music player was able to play most audio formats, and it is a good thing.

In terms of video, the device was able to play 1080p videos without any freezing or heating issues. We streamed videos, yet faced no problems. As we said, you will have to shell out some more bucks on a pair of decent quality earphones for a better experience. Overall, the audio and video are fair enough.

    remove Battery

The Samsung Galaxy J6 sports a 3000mAh battery with no support for fast charging, nor the bundled adaptor is a fast charger. With casual to moderate usage that includes slight gaming, listening to music, GPS navigation, and other usual tasks like taking calls, sending messages, the Galaxy J6 was able to last until the evening, making you charge again once again before you end the day. On the other hand, if you are a heavy user, it will die out on you mid-way making you load up twice before the day ends. This is not an exceptional usage, suffices the needs of a casual user.

There is no idle battery drain when the phone is left unused, but it inevitably drops fast when you are using the phone heavily or during continuous usage. Since there is no fast charge support, the bundled charger takes close to 2 hours 45 minutes to charge fully from 0-100%. Overall, the battery performance of the Galaxy J6 is just average.

    remove Software & Ui

The Galaxy J6 runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with Experience U.I on top. The U.I is close to Pixel launcher with app shortcuts on the dock, and you will have to swipe up to access the app drawer. There is a theme store where you can download themes and change the look and feel of the U.I. Since it is Experience U.I, there are tons of customization options like multi-window, app shortcuts and more. Over the years Samsung has tweaked the interface and Experience U.I feels smooth on daily use. Apart from Google apps, it has a bunch of Samsung default apps and Microsoft applications, and they can’t be removed unless rooted.

The phone comes in two different variants, one with 3GB RAM and another with 4GB RAM. If in case you were to pick up the phone, we suggest you go with the 4GB RAM variant. Since like many Samsung phones, the interface is heavily themed, but the U.I animations and transitions felt smooth and responsive. It can handle multitasking with more 5-6 apps at a time. The app switching animations, transitions are smooth in rendering, so we never had an issue. Overall, the software of the U.I is decent enough.

    remove Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy J6 is an ambitious phone that is competing with best sellers like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, Asus Zenfone Max Pro, Moto G6 and many more. The display though being an AMOLED panel is just a 720p panel, performance is just about average, and the battery is also mediocre. The only bright side to the phone is the build quality, design, and a dedicated microSD card slot. The camera performance too is average. So, if you are in the market, there is no reason you have to incline towards the Galaxy J6 unless you wish to have a Samsung phone.
