Samsung introduced their flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus in India back in March 2018. They are the successor of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ and continues the same design language. Both of them are packed with the latest hardware and software features. Hence, it is pretty safe to say they are two of the very best smartphones in the world of Android. Here, we will be reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus in order to find out if it is the best Android phone in the world currently or not. However, do check out the specifications of the mobile before diving into the complete review.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus rocks a 6.2-inch Quad HD+ display, that is powered by an Exynos 9810 octa-core processor and 6GB RAM. There is both 64GB/128GB of internal memory, that is expandable up to 400GB. The phone runs on Experience UI based on Android 8.0 Oreo OS. There is are two 12 megapixel rear cameras at the back along with a 8 megapixel selfie shooter on the front. A fingerprint scanner is placed below the dual cameras at the back. There is 4G VoLTE and Dual SIM connectivity. We also get the usual WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band) VHT80 MU-MIMO, 3G HSPA+, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, NFC, MST, USB 3.1 Type-C and GPS with GLONASS. In the battery department, there is a 3500mAh battery under the hood with fast charging support. The Galaxy S9 Plus boasts of some sensors including barometer, gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer, heart rate, Iris, pressure, proximity and ambient light sensors.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus carry forwards the ultra premium design standards set by the Galaxy S8 series and Galaxy Note 8 phablet. The bezel-less design with Infinity display based on glass and metal is absolute perfection. It looks gorgeous, even when the display is turned off. The Galaxy S9 Plus has a big display despite its bezel-less design and thus you will not be able to use it with one hand most of the times. The S9 Plus is also IP68 rated, which makes it water and dust resistant. It is a bit slippery with the glass back and thus we would suggest you to use a strong protective case as breaking that gorgeous display would burn a lot of hard-earned money.
Beginning with the back side first, we have the primary rear cameras sitting in the middle of the top half along with the fingerprint sensor below it and LED flash and hear rate sensor on its right. Below the fingerprint sensor, the Samsung branding is engraved under the glass body. The back cover is not removable but the 3500mAh battery sits inside it. Turning the phone, there is a 6.2-inch display along with the selfie camera, couple of sensors and earpiece. We do not have anything below the display as the home button is located under the display and we get two other on-screen buttons. On the right side, we have the power/lock button while the volume rockers and Bixby assistant button are found on the left. At the bottom, we have the USB Type-C port in the center, loudspeaker, primary microphone on the right and 3.5mm audio jack on the left. The hybrid SIM slot tray and a secondary microphone are found at the top. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus sets a benchmark when it comes to design and hardware.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus features a 6.2-inch Super AMOLED Infinity display, which has a resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels (Quad HD+). It is surely one of the best displays currently if not the best and it looks stunningly beautiful. It has a bezel-less design like its predecessor and hence we get a very high screen-to-body ratio. The high-definition content on this display looks very immersive. Despite of being bezel-less, it is a very big display and you cannot use it with one hand. In case you have very big hands, then you might be able to use it with one hand sometimes. The colors are very bright, vivid and accurate. The high pixel density makes the pictures and videos look gorgeous. The display is meant for high-definition content consumption and playing high graphics intensive games. It offers good viewing angles and sunlight legibility is superb as well. This display is actually 15% brighter than the S8 series. We get Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top of the display to protect it from day-to-day wear and tear. However, it will not be able to protect the display from critical drops.
The touch response of the Galaxy S9 Plus' display is very smooth and fluid due to the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, lag-free UI and curved edges. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has a stunning display but is slightly big in size for most people.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is powered by an Exynos 9810 octa-core processor in India while the American market gets the Snapdragon 845 chipset. The performance is identical between the two but when it comes to brand value Snapdragon gets more brownie points over the in-house Exynos processor for sure. Now moving on to the real life performance, it is a beast and can handle anything and everything that you can throw at it. The basic day-to-day performance is a breeze with no visible lags, apps and games open very quickly as well. We get 6GB of LPDDR4x RAM and it makes the multitasking experience very smooth and fluid. In the department of gaming, the GPU is able to handle all kind of games at the highest settings without facing any lag or frame drops. The Galaxy S9 Plus comes with both 64GB and 128GB of internal storage, out of which we got around 56GB and 110GB of free space, respectively. You can also bump it up to 400GB by adding a microSD card. The fingerprint scanner works very accurately and quickly but the placement is still not ideal. Samsung has now placed it below the dual rear cameras but since the phone is quite tall, it is very difficult to reach most of the times with natural hand movement. We also get facial recognition and iris scanning and they are quite accurate compared to their previous iterations seen on the Galaxy S8 series.
Talking about connectivity, the Galaxy S9 Plus from the house of Samsung supports Dual SIM and is 4G VoLTE enabled, where both the SIM cards support 4G. Although, it comes with a hybrid slot and hence you have to sacrifice the second SIM slot if you want more storage or vice versa. It also supports NFC and USB Type-C charging. The battery capacity of the Galaxy S9 Plus is 3500mAh. It is a non-removable battery and we get fast charging support via both wired and wireless connections. You will get up to one day of battery life with moderate usage. The battery life is not the greatest due to the Quad HD+ display and high computing power.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is an incredible performer in most departments.
In the camera department of the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, there are two 12 megapixel rear cameras where the primary lens has a variable aperture of f/2.4 - f/1.5 while the secondary lens has an aperture of f.2.4. Talking about the primary shooter on the S9 Plus, it does a brilliant job and is certainly one of the best smartphone cameras ever. We get OIS support and thus moving shots can be captured without any shaking effect. The images shot in outdoor daylight conditions come with lot of details and color accuracy is great as well. You can use the f/1.5 aperture for night shots to capture bright images and f/2.4 aperture for normal shots in daytime. The secondary camera with 12 megapixel telephoto lens helps in clicking live focus for bokeh effect with background blur. The portrait mode has improved and is better than the one found in Note 8. The cameras are able to focus on subjects very quickly due to the Dual Pixel technology and thus it can take good macro images too. HDR photos looked too good with stunning dynamic range. Now coming to the selfie camera, there is a 8 megapixel camera on the front. It does not have high megapixel count but you can click awesome selfies using it. Since we get a f/1.7 aperture, the low light performance is great as well.
The camera app interface of the Galaxy S9 Plus is very clean and easy to use. Hence, anybody can use it and click great pictures and videos. There are a lot of modes and filters along with a complete manual mode for pro photographers. In terms of video, the primary cameras can record in 4K with VDIS support while the selfie camera can shoot 2K videos. Both of them deliver stunning quality. Also, we get 960fps super slo-mo videos and you can use it to create stunning slow motion videos.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus comes with one of the top rated smartphone cameras in the world that can shoot stunning images and videos.
The loudspeaker of the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is placed at the right bottom of the device beside the USB Type-C port but this time we get a single cutout speaker instead of machine drilled speaker holes. Also, we get stereo speakers as the earpiece above the display also acts as a speaker. Thus, the S9 series has the best ever loudspeakers so far. The sound quality is great too as Samsung has partnered with AKG and Dolby Atmos technologies. When most of the other smartphone manufacturers are getting rid of the 3.5mm audio jack, Samsung is still persisting with it and thus we get it on the Galaxy S9 Plus as well. You may consider it a plus point if you're a traditional headphone phreak. It has a native music app and it supports most of the audio file formats including FLAC.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus can easily play both Full HD and Ultra HD videos. Thus, you can watch any movie or stream any video on the go without facing any lag or frame drop. It looks stunning due to the Quad HD+ Infinity display. The native video player works very well but you can download a third-party one if you have any personal favorite. The S9 Plus comes with a pair of AKG earphones and it sounds incredible. So, you'll not need a third-party earphone for sure unless you want a wireless one. Overall, the audio and video quality of the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is incredible.
Out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus runs on Samsung Experience UI based on Android 8.0 Oreo OS. It is also expected to get the next couple of major Android OS updates as well. The UI has been re-engineered for the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus so that you do not have to reach the bottom of the display all the time. Thus, by default, swiping up or down anywhere on the home screen will take you to the app drawer. Although, you can also choose to disable the app drawer and have all the app icons on the home screen. The Samsung launcher and in-house apps are optimized for the 18:9 aspect ratio and take advantages of the taller display but the third-party apps without optimization you'll see black bars, which results in 16:9 aspect ratio. The edge panels appear when you swipe inwards from your preferred edge. It will show shortcuts or information in a column and there are loads of panels that you can choose from. The S9 Plus also comes with a dedicated Bixby button below the volume rockers. You can set contextual reminders, show your S Health information along with news, calendar and suggested apps. However, it currently offers limited functionality and Google Assistant is far better than Bixby. There are a lot of pre-installed Samsung, Google and Microsoft apps on the S9 Plus and they are useful but you can choose to delete them if you wish to. It comes with AR Emoji which uses machine language to analyse and map more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions. It is a fun feature to have but not life changing for sure. In case you do not like the interface, then you can certainly install a third-party theme such as Pixel Launcher to give it a makeover.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has a fluid interface based on Oreo OS and comes with a lot of additional features which are not found in stock Android.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is an incredible smartphone but it is quite big in size. Hence, it is not meant for people who do not like big phones, for them Samsung has the Galaxy S9 but you'll miss out on the dual rear cameras, extra RAM and battery capacity. The Galaxy S9 Plus has a gorgeous display, stunning bezel-less design made up of metal and glass along with incredible overall performance. The interface looks polished and the battery life is above average. The camera department can click stunning images and videos as well. There are no major cons but we do not get a dedicated microSD card slot, the fingerprint sensor placement is still not perfect for people with small hands and the display is too big for some consumers. However, if you do not have any problem with the cons and have no issues with the price, then you can go for the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. In case you would like to check out other options in the market, then do have a look at the Apple iPhone X, LG V30+ and Google Pixel 2 XL.
