    Expert Review

    remove Conclusion

The Sony Xperia XA1 Plus is a very good smartphone but we do not get great value for money as the pricing is on the higher side. It does come with a great build quality and is made up of metal and glass but the design looks outdated because of thick bezels on top and bottom of the display. The overall performance is quite good, the display is bright and vivid, fingerprint sensors is fast and accurate and both the cameras can take great images. However, a gyroscope is missing and we get MediaTek processor in this price segment. Thus, if you do not mind these cons, then you can surely go for the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus as it is a good device. If you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the Moto X4, Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro or Apple iPhone SE.

    removeIntroduction

Sony Xperia XA1 Plus, a premium mid-ranged smartphone, was launched in India back in September 2017. It is a successor of the Xperia XA Plus that comes with an improved camera system and display. It is undoubtedly an expensive smartphone and is not a value for money device but that also varies from person to person. Hence, Sony Mobile is targeting the Sony smartphone loyalists who are looking for a premium experience. So let us find out in our Sony Xperia XA1 Plus review if it is worth your hard-earned money or you should purchase something else. However, first take a quick look at the specifications of the mobile below.

The Sony Xperia XA1 Plus runs on Xperia UI based on Android 7.0 Nougat OS and is powered by a MediaTek Helio P20 octa-core processor and 4GB RAM. The phone boasts of a 5.5-inch Full HD display and packs in a 3430mAh battery with fast charging support. There is 32GB of internal memory onboard but you can also expand it further up to 256GB. The fingerprint sensor is embedded on the home button. In the camera department, we get a 23 megapixel camera on the back and a 8 megapixel shooter on the front. The Xperia XA1 Plus has 4G VoLTE connectivity along with Dual SIM support. Other options include WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n (Dual Band), Bluetooth 4.2 LE, NFC, USB Type-C, GPS and GLONASS. The Sony Xperia XA1 Plus features a lot of sensors such as magnetometer, accelerometer, ambient light and proximity sensors.

    remove Design & Display

The Sony Xperia XA1 Plus is a premium smartphone without an iota of doubt because of its glass and metal construction but the phone does not look great from the front. It contains huge bezels on top and bottom but the side bezels are very thin. In the age of bezel-less smartphones, the Xperia XA1 Plus wastes a lot of real estate. Due to big bezels, the phone is not compact and you cannot use it with one hand most of the times. It is also on the heavier side (190 grams) and thus it will take some time to get used to the weight. The edges are sharp and hence your palms might hurt if you hold the phone for extended period of time. The phone is also a bit slippery because of the metal and glass design, so we would suggest you to use a protective case.

Starting with the front side, we get a big 5.5-inch display along with the selfie camera, LED notification, couple of sensors, earpiece and Sony branding on top. There are three on-screen buttons for navigation. The primary microphone is found on the edge below the display. At the bottom, we have the USB Type-C port in the middle and loudspeaker on the right while the 3.5mm jack and secondary microphone are at the top. The volume rockers, power/unlock (fingerprint sensor) and dedicated camera buttons are located on the right side while the left side has the dedicated microSD and dual SIM card slots. Turning towards the back, we have the primary camera sitting at the top left followed by the LED flash below it and Xperia branding in the middle. Like all metal phones, the back cover of the Xperia XA1 Plus cannot be removed but a 3430mAh battery sits underneath it. Overall, the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus has a great build quality but the phone does not look modern because of the huge bezels on top and bottom.

The Sony Xperia XA1 Plus packs in a 5.5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD). Sony is known for making great display panels and this one is no different. It has great color contrast, brightness levels and neutral color saturation. The texts, images and videos looked very crisp and vivid. We also get an Image Enhance Technology on this display and it makes it better than most of its peers. The side bezels are ultra thin but we get massive bezels on top and bottom, so the immersive experience is missing as we do not get a 18:9 display. There is a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top of the display and it certainly helps in protecting the screen from daily wear and tear but it will not be able to save the display from drops. So please do not drop the phone and also use a protective case. The touch response of the Xperia XA1 Plus is very smooth and does not lag at all. It is mostly due to the great display quality, fluid UI and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top of the display. Overall, the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus has a great display that is tailor-made for watching high-definition videos and playing games.

    remove Performance

In terms of performance, the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus is powered by a MediaTek Helio P20 octa-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz along with 4GB RAM. We would have really liked a Snapdragon chipset in this smartphone as its overall performance is better but the MediaTek chipset also does a moderately good job. It is a mid-level processor that can manage all the day-to-day tasks without any trouble. Most popular apps and games open very quickly. There is no visible lag or stuttering in the UI. The multitasking experience is superior because of the 4GB RAM onboard. You can perform intense multitasking and run at least ten apps in the background simultaneously. In terms of gaming, you can run most of the games at the highest graphics settings. The Xperia XA1 Plus comes with 32GB of internal memory, out of which around 25GB of free space will be available after first boot. If you're not satisfied with the internal storage, then you can increase it up to 256GB by adding a microSD card. The fingerprint sensor is embedded on top of the home button and it is located on the right side. It might be an unusual position for a fingerprint sensor as we get it either at the front or at the back but it is very accurate and fast as well.

Talking about connectivity, the Xperia XA1 Plus from the house of Sony supports Dual SIM and 4G VoLTE works on both the SIM slots. We also get a dedicated microSD card slot and thus you will not have to sacrifice a SIM card in order to increase the storage. The 3430mAh battery (non-removable) under its hood comes with Qnovo Adaptive fast charging. It gives up to one day of battery life with moderate usage.

Overall, the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus is a good performer but a better processor would have made it one of the best in its category.

    remove Cameras

The Sony Xperia XA1 Plus rocks a 23 megapixel primary camera at the back. It is a superior camera compared to other mid-ranged smartphone cameras. This is mainly because of the Hybrid Auto Focus and SteadyShot technology. The focusing mechanism is very fast and accurate. You can click perfect moving images without any blurring. In daylight conditions, the photos come out very well along with a lot of detail and vivid colors. The color saturation stays neutral as well. In low light, we get some noise and grain but it is not much and the overall composition of the pictures look good. HDR shots look spectacular with awesome dynamic range while the macro shots also have a lot of depth of field effect. It does not have a portrait mode as we do not get dual lens here. Now talking about the front camera, we get a 8 megapixel shooter and it can click great selfies with very good amount of detail. Also, it has a wide-angle lens and thus you can easily click great group selfies with your friends and family.

The Sony Xperia XA1 Plus' camera app comes with a very simple and easy to use UI. There are a lot of shooting modes along with live filters and other effects but we would suggest you to use the Auto Mode as it works the best in most lighting conditions. Both the cameras can shoot Full HD videos and the quality is very good but Sony should have given 4K video recording option for the primary camera. Overall, the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus has a great set of cameras but 4K video recording is absent.

    remove Audio & Video

The loudspeaker grille of the Xperia XA1 Plus is located on the right bottom. The audio output is loud but not the loudest in its segment and it sounds very good as well. Also, the audio does not distort even at the highest levels. Since the speaker is not located on the back, the audio does not get muffled either when the phone is kept on a flat surface. We get SmartAmp and Clear Audio+ features on this phone for an incredible audio experience but these features only work with earphones/headphones. The bundled earphone's quality is quite good and we would advice you to use it. The native music app has all the necessary features and hence you will not need any other app for optimal performance.

Talking about the video watching experience on the Xperia XA1 Plus, you can easily watch Full HD or 4K videos smoothly. There is no stuttering or lag while watching videos natively or streaming them online. Overall, the audio and video quality of the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus is one of the best in its segment.

    remove Software & Ui

Out of the box, the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus runs on Xperia UI based on Android 7.0 Nougat OS. Sony Mobile has confirmed an Android 8.0 Oreo OS update for the premium mid-ranged smartphone in the near future. The Xperia UI is customizable but it retains all the core Nougat features. It is very stable and the interface is smooth. We did not feel any lag or stuttering in day-to-day usage as well as playing heavy apps or games. The icons and the whole look feels quite modern as well. It does come with some pre-loaded apps (bloatware) but you can easily delete them if you do not intend on using them. In case you do not like the Xperia UI, then you can surely go for a theme like Pixel Launcher or Nova Launcher to get a stock Android feel.

Overall, the user interface of the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus is very smooth and the OS is expected to get an upgrade to Oreo soon.
