    Expert Review

    remove Conclusion

The Vivo V9 Pro being priced at Rs. 17,990 is a terrific smartphone that ticks most of the boxes. The performance is impressive; thanks to Snapdragon 660, cameras are easily one of the best in the segment, the display is bright and vibrant, and the battery life is decent enough. Though the build quality and custom skin on top are slight deal breakers for us, it comes down as a personal preference. So, if you are in the market looking for a smartphone with the premium build quality and stock Android interface, then the Vivo V9 Pro is not for you if you are fine with the shortcomings, it is the smartphone for you.

Vivo has been having the best time in India with consistent and successful launches at regular intervals. The company’s strategy to launch phones in different price segments seems to be working out great. Latest to join the list is the Vivo V9 Pro which is a budget phone that comes with a notch and a fingerprint sensor. With Vivo phones packing incredible technology like in-display fingerprint sensor, tear-drop notch among others, the Vivo V9 looks like it is a moderate offering aimed at the masses with pretty impressive internals. Since the hardware specifications don’t mean anything in real-life, we review the V9 Pro to see how well it fares in real-world. Let’s get started.

Vivo V9 Pro Specifications: The Vivo V9 Pro sports a 6.3-inches Full HD+ (2280 x 1080 pixels) Full HD+ 19:9 IPS display and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 14nm Mobile Platform clocked at 2.2GHz Octa-Core processor with Adreno 512 GPU. There is 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage that is further expandable up to 256GB. It runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with FunTouch OS 4.0. There is a 13+2-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and HDR mode, and a 16-megapixel selfie shooter with AI beauty features. Connectivity features include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS+ GLONASS, USB OTG. A 3260mAh battery on board.

    remove Design & Display

Ignore the performance, the cameras, software, and other things, the first thing that buyers notice in a smartphone is the build quality, in hand-feel of the phone and the overall. Lucky for Vivo, the curved edges on the back, shiny blue finish with the gold colored rim, the V9 Pro escapes from being called a plastic phone. Despite being a phone made out of plastic, the V9 Pro steals the show with its stunning looks and in-hand feel. The curved edges on the rear give good grip and in-hand feel even after using it for a while. The gold-plated rim around the camera module, fingerprint sensor, and Vivo logo makes the device look a lot elegant for the price.

Despite the large 6.3-inch display, the phone comfortably fits in hands but needs two hands to use. We never hurt or strained our hands even after extended usage. Since it packs a notched display, there is more screen real-estate for media and gaming. The in-hand feel and the overall weight distribution are perfect.

Moving to placements, up front we have the 16MP front-facing camera, the usual set of sensors, and down below, the capacitive buttons are placed within the display. The volume rockers and the power button is placed on the right side. The SIM tray tool is present on the left. The speaker grill, microUSB port, and 3.5mm audio are located on the bottom, while there is nothing on the top. The rear is where you find the 13+2MP rear cameras, fingerprint sensor, LED flash, and Vivo branding. The back is sealed, so the battery isn’t removable. All-in-all, the build quality and design of the Vivo V9 Pro might not stand out in the race, but thanks to impressive in-hand feel and the overall look, it survives.

The Vivo V9 Pro sports a Vivo 6.3-inch (2280 x 1080 pixels) HD+ 19:9 IPS display. Looking at the aspect ratio, you almost saw it coming, yes, the Vivo V9 Pro comes with a notch at the top where the front camera and sensors are present. While it doesn’t offer any extra functionality like Apple or other phones that come with IR sensor based face unlocking, it is the trend we are seeing. Another good thing is that thanks to the 19:9 IPS display, the device packs an impressive 90% screen-to-body ratio and 1.75mm slim bezels for media consumption and gaming. Moving along, the 1080p Full HD+ panel offers good colors and accurate color balance even outdoors.

Viewing angles are decent; we didn’t notice any distortion when viewing from extreme angles. Text and images looked sharp and crisp with no signs of pixilation issue when zooming in on pictures or browsing the web. Another good thing about the display is the brightness levels; we were impressed by how bright the panel is even under the direct sunlight. I mean, I was able to access the content even with around 70% brightness. There is an auto-brightness sensor, so you don’t have to adjust the brightness all the time once enabled.

The touch response is smooth, and it is responsive when scrolling or while playing games. Using the software, you can hide the notch but will have to live with slim bezels on top and bottom. Overall, the display of the Vivo V9 Pro is brilliant, and it is easily one of the best and bright displays in the price segment. If not for the lack of AMOLED panel, there is nothing much to complain.

    remove Performance

The Vivo V9 Pro is also powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC clocked at 2.2GHz Octa-Core Processor and 6GB RAM. Ith Snapdragon 660 being a best-in-class chipset, the performance as you expect is top-notch. It is very efficient at handling your day-to-day activities. Apps open up fast, and they load pretty fast as well. We didn’t notice any lag or stutters in the interface while switching between apps or when navigating through the interface.

RAM management is smooth as well, and no apps ran out of memory, thanks to the 6GB RAM. Other functionalities like the Split-Screen might be a treat to the eyes, thanks to the tall display. We played games like PUBG, Asphalt 8/9, Modern Combat 5 and more. The gameplay is smooth even with graphics set to high. The gameplay is responsive and didn’t notice any frame drops. Another good thing about the phone is that there is no any heating issue, and the Vivo V9 Pro seems to be handling that very well. It has a fingerprint sensor, and it unlocks the phone almost instantly. It also comes with a face-unlocking system, and it is fast as well. Overall, the performance of the V9 Pro is quite impressive.

    remove Cameras

Vivo V9 Pro comes with a 13+2MP dual rear cameras with f2.2 aperture and a 16MP selfie camera on the front. On first glance into the camera app on the Vivo V9 Pro, you will notice how similar it is to the one found on the iPhones. You will have to swipe left/right to shift between modes, and it is one of the easiest ways instead of going through toggles in the settings section. It comes with modes like Panorama, Faces Beauty, Photo, and Video, and HDR.

Moving along, the picture quality when shot in good lighting conditions and outdoors, is impressive with a lot of details and close to natural colors. There weren’t any noise or grains in the image given the optimal lighting conditions. It also comes with a portrait mode that does an acceptable job by creating a Bokeh effect differentiating the subject in the frame with the background. The portrait mode looks like a software gimmick rather than the sensor performance considering the quality.

The HDR mode brings decent lighting and brightens the shadows in the dull images. Moving to low-light, the quality of the photos drop significantly like most budget phones these days. The pictures are noisy and are in no way usable on social media as well. Turning on flash will help at times, but the output looks artificial and too flashy for our liking. You can record 1080p videos, and the quality of the footage is decent, but the lack of OIS is clearly visible.

The front 16MP shooter does a decent job in good lighting conditions. Thanks to the AI, the portrait mode shots from the front-camera are perfect, but the edge detection could have been a little better. All in all, the cameras of the Vivo V9 Pro perform well in the daylight conditions and struggles in low-light situations like any other mid-range smartphone.

    remove Audio & Video

The company is bundling a pair of earphones within the box of the Vivo V9 Pro. While they look a lot like Apple’s earpods, they sound decent enough until it starts paining in the ears. Thanks to the music specific features like equalizer and custom DAC, the sound output via the headphones is impressive. The audio listening experience is one of the best in the market in this price segment and doesn’t disappoint you. However, you still have to invest on a pair of earphones if you want to have an acceptable listening experience as the bundled one wear off easily. The audio player was able to handle most formats, and the speaker can easily cover an entire room.

Thanks to the 90% screen-to-body ratio and a 6.3-inch display, the V9 Pro offers terrific media experience. It was able to 1080p videos with no issues, and the quality is impressive. However, there is a disadvantage though. You will have to crop the videos to watch it in the complete full screen. The dark bars along the sides can be a distraction since we watched most of the videos in the original 16:9 aspect ratio. Overall, the audio and video quality of the Vivo V9 Pro is decent.

    remove Battery

The Vivo V9 Pro packs a 3260mAh battery with no support for fast charging which can be an issue if you are on the run. Moving along, during our time with the device, our regular working day use cases usually includes Checking emails, gaming, stream music/videos through 4G or WiFi, GPS navigation, taking calls, sending messages, social media and more. With this kind of usage, the battery was able to last until the evening. However, this usage falls anywhere between high-end to moderate, but if you push it to its extremes, you will have to charge it once or twice again before you end the day. While we are not very impressed mainly, but it gets the job done.

However, the software optimizations restrict the battery from draining drastically to a certain extent. There were no drastic battery drops or overnight drain, and this is a good thing. As said above, the battery didn’t drain much even on heavy usage. The battery performance is quite decent, but it surely can’t match up with Asus Zenfone Max, or the Redmi’s or other phones in the similar segment.

Since there is no fast charging support, the 3260mAh battery with the bundled adaptor took close to 2 hours 45 minutes to charge fully. Though this is a drag, we can’t expect more from a regular 5w adaptor. Overall, the battery of the Vivo V9 Pro is acceptable, but not the very best.

    remove Software & Ui

The Vivo V9 Pro runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with FunTouch OS 4.0 on top like with most Vivo phones these days. The interface is like you see on most Chinese phones where there is no app drawer, and all the app shortcuts, widgets are present right on the main home screen. Though you can install a custom launcher and enable it to have a stock Android look. It comes with a theme store, where you can change the look and feel of the U.I to your liking. The quick toggles can be accessed by swiping up from the bottom, again a similar representation to iPhones. Pulling down from the top brings notification shade where you can only access notifications from apps. Apart from Google stock apps, it also has apps like Facebook UC Browser, WhatsApp, Amazon, and others and the good thing is that these apps can be uninstalled even without root access.

It comes with 6GB of RAM out of which around 4GB is free when just the default apps are running in the background or during first boot. Since we have a huge amount of free RAM, the device can handle multitasking with ease, and switching between app didn’t result in any lag or delay. During our time testing the device, we never noticed apps running out of memory, or apps crashing either. App animations and transition speeds were smooth. Overall, the software and U.I of the Vivo V9 Pro is smooth and up to the expectations. There is no word on Android 9.0 Pie upgrade.
