The mid-range smartphone market is heavily crowded at the moment with loads of feature and thin price gaps. The number of entry-level to mid-range smartphones in India is simply staggering, just like any other place. While some are bundling high-end hardware specification with enhanced skin on top many are rooting for snappy cameras. The Vivo Y71 is a lighter version of Vivo V7+ with a price of Rs 10,990 on Flipkart. It was launched in April this year and is available in black and champagne. The phone comes in variations of 3GB and 4GB. This phone flaunts modest specs while keeping some of V7+’s features, like 6-inch HD+ display. The Chinese brand Vivo has made quite an impression in Indian market with its budget to mid-range phones. But it is yet to catch up with the likes of Xiaomi or OnePlus. It has tried to close some gaps with a snapdragon processor and sleek design, but the phone does not offer anything lucrative to set itself apart in the saturated smartphone market.
The Vivo Y71 is powered by 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor with Adreno 308 GPU coupled with 3GB RAM. It is not Snapdragon 525 but still 425 has enough fuel to power this phone. The phone is a sturdy plastic body with eye-catchy bevels on the sides, much like V7+. The thin bezels and edge-to-edge phone screen adds quite a zing and premium touch to this phone. The matte finish on the back is grippy and attractive. The rear side of the phone has the 13MP camera with flash on the top left. There is a camera bump on the back much like V7+. There is no fingerprint scanner though but Vivo has provided with face-unlock to make up for that. The polycarbonate body measures 155.87 x 75.7 x 7.8 mm and weighs 150 grams. It sits snugly in hand and is easily operable with your thumb. The volume rocker and lock button are on the right edge with the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the top. The front camera too comes with flash and is at the top. The full-size sim tray is on the left. The phone has an internal storage of only 16GB and is expandable with a dedicated microSD card up to 256 GB. The phone has dual SIM option and supports WiFi connectivity and Bluetooth 4.2 version. It is compatible with any GSM network provider and supports 4G/LTE and 4GVoLTE. The phone has got OTG support and you can carry your favorite music on the go.
Except the plastic body the phone has a compact design with satisfactory hardware specifications in a small form factor. The phone package comes with headphone, micro USB cable, charger, sim ejection tool and back guard.
Vivo Y71 has a 6-inch HD-plus IPS LCD display with a screen resolution of 720×1440 pixels at 268 pixels per inch. The screen is multi-touch TFT capacitive which is justified in this range. The screen is not bright enough when you are viewing in direct sunlight and tends to get reflective. It has good viewing angles and icons and images look sharp and vivid. The IPS display does not do much like an OLED screen and lacks color intensity and freshness. Vivo has endowed the handset with face unlocking feature in place of finger-print sensor. The function is smooth but not secured like Apple’s Face ID which is way more sophisticated. I recommend using the passcode over face unlock simply because the latter is less reliable. But still at this price this feature gives you a taste of what this popular face unlock experience is really like.
The Vivo Y71 is fueled by 3,360 Li-ion mAH battery and it is good enough to let you run through the day with single charge and with moderate use you can well get through a day and half. At this price the battery is really a bonus for this phone.
The phone can handle basic operations including call, email, browsing, social networking, maps and messages. Even when you play for long the phone does not have any heating issue. The phone performs well with good network connection and calls are clear and loud.
The 13-megapixel rear camera come with LED flash capture enough light for well exposed shots. When you take shots at both well-lit and poor-lit conditions they are good enough, but a 13-MP is expected to do much more, as is the case with other cameras in smartphones like Huawei Mate 10. The camera of this phone does nto ocme with sophisticated image sensors like a Sony or Leica. But keeping in mind the price tag the camera does justice. There are several camera features that you can have fun with like, panorama shot, Geo tagging, continuous shot, pro mode, face detection, face beauty, night mode, image filters and picture size. The options are endless and that’s what smartphones are here for. At this price range, almost, all smartphone cameras deliver near performance, hence making it all the more difficult to make the choice. The rear and front lens both have F2.2 aperture with single-tone LED flash. The camera can shoot video up to 1080p resolution with good audio clarity and volume. The front camera too can record full-HD videos. You can change the aspect ratios to adjust your picture aspect. The bokeh mode gives good results in good lighting and effects become progressively worse with poor lighting. The camera UI offers interesting features in Pro mode with adjustments in shutter speed, ISO, autofocus and white balance. The post processing options are rather limited. There are no fancy stickers or filters to add to your pictures.
The Vivo Y71 comes with Android Oreo 8.1 out of the box with Fun Touch OS 4.0 skin on top. The Fun Touch OS is fun to use for its flexibility and customization. But the downside is the space it needs and fills up in the already meagre 16GB memory space. You are left with 6.5GB internal memory space and then if you are a game addict then three games will fill up the remaining with just around 100MB left for your other files. So, if you buy this phone make sure you have a SD card handy. Face unlock is snappy and opens in a zippy. But as mentioned before it is not very reliable and safe. The hardware of Y71 can easily tackle a dozen apps and ensures a smooth performance.
This phone will not provide you amazing entertainment and can perform moderate tasks. For example, you play basic games with ease. When you play Asphalt 8 game can run pretty good with average sluggishness but with more intense and fast games like Marvel Future Fight and PUBG Mobile the effects are slower with significant drops in frame rate not to mention the lag time. The phone hangs quite a bit and one should rather not play these games in this handset. The Game app is quite nifty though and can be a good entertainment if you keep your expectations low.
Vivo Y71 does not give you any out of the box reason to buy it. It is just another budget phone in the market with decent hardware specification and software to ensure you have a seamless experience everyday with basic operations. There are other Chinese and Indian phones with relatively better cameras and more software customizations in this budget. The battery is an advantage of this phone though and if you are looking for long time performance Y71 can be your choice. The Snapdragon processor and Android Oreo are undoubtedly powerful combos to buy this phone. Vivo Y71 could be a good supplement to your expensive phone or could be an upgrade from entry-level phones.
