The Vivo Y83 Pro is a good mid-ranged smartphone. It has a beautiful design with excellent looks. The display is gorgeous but it lacks Full HD resolution. The overall performance is good and the interface is smooth as well. The battery life is also good but it lacks fast charging. We get both Face Unlock and fingerprint sensor for unlocking the device. The selfie camera is good while the rear cameras are decent. So if you’re looking for a stylish mid-ranged smartphone, go for the Vivo Y83 Pro. In case you want to check out the competition, then have a look at the Redmi Note 5 Pro, ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 and Honor 9N.
Vivo Y83 Pro was announced in India back in August 2018. It is a ‘pro’ variant of the Y83 launched in June 2018. We get dual rear cameras here and more internal memory. It has a glossy mirror back which changes color as light hits the phone at certain angles. The mid-ranged smartphone comes with a 19:9 aspect ratio display along with a notch. So let us check out the Vivo Y83 Pro review to find out if you should skip this phone or purchase it. However, do take a close look at the specifications of the Y83 Pro below.
The Vivo Y83 Pro is powered by a MediaTek Helio P22 octa-core processor, coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory (expandable up to 128GB). The phone sports a 6.22-inch HD+ display and runs on Funtouch OS 4.0 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box. In the camera department, we get two rear cameras (13 megapixel + 2 megapixel) and a 8 megapixel selfie shooter. A fingerprint sensor is located at the back. There is Dual SIM connectivity along with 4G VoLTE support. Others include 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band), Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS. In the sensor department, we get a gyroscope, proximity and ambient light sensors. Under the hood, there is a 3260mAh non-removable battery.
The Vivo Y83 Pro has a modern bezel-less smartphone design and is made up of metal. It has ultra slim thin bezels on all the sides. Thus, the immersive full-display looks gorgeous with the ‘notch’. The build quality is great like most other smartphones. The 2.5D curved glass display makes the front look better. You may not be able to use the phone with one hand all the time but it is usable with one hand. The weight is on the neutral side (154 grams) so you won’t have any problem in using it for longer periods. The curved edges help in achieving a good grip. The back has a glossy mirror finish that changes color as light hits the phone at certain angles. It looks great but we would suggest you to use a protective case since the back is quite slippery.
On the front, there is a 6.22-inch display along with the selfie camera, earpiece and couple of sensors inside a notch cutout. We get three on-screen buttons for navigation and thus there are no capacitive buttons below the display. The volume rocker and power/lock buttons are placed on the right side while the left side houses the slot for SIM and microSD card. The 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB port, loudspeaker and primary microphone are found at the bottom while the top houses the secondary microphone. Turning towards the back side, we get the dual rear cameras along with the LED flash on the top left. The fingerprint sensor and Vivo branding are seen in the middle. The back cover is not removable but a 3260mAh battery sits underneath it. Overall, the Vivo Y83 Pro has a stylish design along with decent hardware.
The Vivo Y83 Pro features a 6.22-inch IPS display, which comes with a resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels (HD+). It is a generic display in this segment but it is quite sharp and vivid. However, the resolution is on the lower side and we should have been given a Full HD+ panel. The brightness and contrast levels are good. The colors are neutral and the saturation is on point as well. The viewing angles are moderately decent and sunlight legibility is good as well. You will enjoy watching movies and playing games on this display. Also, the brightness gets adjusted automatically according to the light surroundings as it comes with an ambient light sensor. A layer of 2.5D curved glass is placed on top of the screen to protect it from daily wear and tear and it is successfully able to do that but do not expect it to protect the display from any drop.
The touch response of the Y83 Pro is very smooth, mainly because of the fluid interface and 2.5D curved glass protection. Overall, the Vivo Y83 Pro has a pretty good display but the resolution could have been a bit better.
The Vivo Y83 Pro is powered by a MediaTek Helio P22 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz and we get 4GB RAM onboard. It is a mid-ranged chipset from the house of MediaTek and it can process most of the day-to-day tasks with ease and we do not find any frame drops. You can perform intense multitasking on this phone and run a lot of apps simultaneously. Most popular apps and games load up quickly and they do not show any lag. You can even play most of the games at the highest settings but some of the high-end ones might run at medium settings. The Y83 Pro has 64GB of internal storage, out of which you will get around 55GB of free space. However, if you want more storage, you can get that by inserting a microSD card (up to 256GB). There is a fingerprint sensor at the back and we also get Face Unlock at the front for unlocking the phone. Both of these options are quick and accurate.
Talking about connectivity, we get 4G VoLTE support. It is a Dual SIM phone (nano) and both of them supports 4G simultaneously. The battery capacity of the Y83 Pro is 3260mAh (non-removable) but it does not support fast charging. You will get around one day of battery life with moderate usage and one and half day with normal usage.
Overall, the Vivo Y83 Pro is an all-rounder in most of the departments.
In the Vivo Y83 Pro, we get a 13 megapixel primary camera along with a 2 megapixel secondary camera at the back. The phone has good rear cameras and you can click good photos in bright daylight conditions. We got a lot of details and the color saturation was also neutral. The images shot were vivid and sharp. However, the low light pictures clicked indoors had little grain. The focusing mechanism was fast. HDR mode helps in taking great landscape pictures with a lot of dynamic range. Also, macro images looked quite good with shallow depth of field effect. We get a 2 megapixel secondary lens for clicking portrait images and it does a pretty good job in optimal lighting conditions. Talking about the front-facing camera, we get a 8 megapixel lens and it can take good selfies. However, the USP of this camera is the AI Face Beauty, which intelligently detects age, gender, skin texture, lighting environment and skin tone. It helps bring out unique features with its customized beauty enhancements effects. Thus, the selfies look better than other budget selfie phone cameras.
The camera app of the Y83 Pro is very easy to usex as it has a simple interface. The stock app offers various shooting modes including a pro mode and it is good enough for clicking and editing pictures and videos. The primary cameras can shoot Full HD videos and they look quite good. Overall, the Vivo Y83 Pro has a good set of cameras and the AI Face Beauty mode for the selfie camera is great.
The loudspeaker of the Vivo Y83 Pro is located on the right bottom. The speaker is quite loud and the sound quality is very good. The audio does not distort even at the highest level. However, the audio will get blocked by your palm when you will be watching movies or playing games. Google Play Music app is the stock music player on this phone and it comes with all the necessary features. Thus, you will not need any other music app for optimal performance but you can download any other app according to your preference.
The Vivo Y83 Pro can play Full HD or 4K videos easily as it comes with a good processor and display. It does not come with a bundled earphone and thus we would suggest you to buy a good pair of earphones or headphones and use it during gaming or watching videos or listening to music. Overall, the Vivo Y83 Pro does offer a good audio and video watching experience.
The Vivo Y83 Pro smartphone runs on Funtouch OS 4.0 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS. It is an improvement over the previous iterations of FunTouch OS mainly as we get the latest Android version here. However, it is very difficult to expect a major Android OS update in the future from Vivo since it does not have a good reputation of providing updates. The custom interface looks more or less like iOS as the app icons, settings menu and other features look very similar. Although, the phone has a smooth UI and we did not face any lag day-to-day usage. Now talking about the features of FunTouch OS, it is very customizable and has a lot of features such as gesture controls, home screen customization, themes and more. However, there is no app drawer, similar to iOS and we get a single layer UI. In order to access the quick settings, you have to swipe up from the bottom of the screen instead of visiting the notification area. In the next few updates, you can expect the option to hide by notch as well. There are some pre-installed apps (bloatware) but you can easily uninstall them if you want to. In case you're not fond of FunTouch OS, then we would suggest you to download a third-party theme such as Pixel Launcher for a more stock Android like feel.
Overall, the Vivo Y83 Pro has a very smooth interface based on the latest Android OS.
