Xiaomi is finally making its way into the race of flagship smartphones with its new launch - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. Xiaomi has launched Mi Mix 2 with the price tag of Rs 35,999 in India.
Xiaomi is well known for their budget phones, it will be interesting to see how well their flagship phones fairs against the strong competition.
Before getting into the detailed review of Mi Mix 2, let’s look at some of its specifications. Mi Mix 2 comes with a 5.99 inch LCD display with the pixel resolution of 2160 x 1080. Mi Mix 2 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor. The phone has a RAM of 6GB and internal storage of 128 GB which is non-expendable. Mi Mix 2 has back camera of 12 megapixel and front camera of 5 megapixel. Mi Mix 2 is powered by 3400 mAh battery. Mi Mix 2 runs with Android Nougat 7.1.1 with MIUI 8.
Let’s see if Xiaomi has succeeded in making a smashing flagship smartphone or not, in our detailed review below.
When we talk about a flagship smartphone, the first thing we notice is its design. We accept something luxurious and different in a design, when we go to buy a flagship smartphone. Xiaomi is mainstreaming its previous Mi Mix concept of ceramic unibody and bezel-less design in Mi Mix 2. Xiaomi, without a doubt, has done an amazing job at designing Mi Mix 2. Mi Mix 2 has included the concept of all-screen in its design. Mi Mix 2 is built using aluminium frame on the sides, glass front and ceramic back. Mi Mix 2 is sleek, glossy and comfortable to hold. Even with the ceramic body, the phone is easy to grip. But the back can easily collect fingerprint smudges and can be annoying sometimes.
Mi Mix 2 has placed the front camera at the bottom in this design. The bottom also has USB Type-C port for charging, data transfer or audio. You will find the fingerprint scanner at the back, just below the rear camera. You will not find a headphone jack in this design. With the phone you will get a SIM ejector tool, a back cover, a 9V/2A charger and a USB Type C cable.
Display is one of the high points of this phone. In the display part, Mi Mix 2 surpasses most of the high end flagship smartphones available in the market. Mi Mix2 consists of a 5.99-inch IPS LCD display with aspect ratio of 18:9. Although, the 18:9 aspect ratio does makes the apps and icons to feel little stretched out. The screen resolution is of 2160 x 1080 pixels, which provides bright, vivid and apt colour reproduction. The all screen display gives superior experience of watching movies and videos. Although, most of the smartphones has included the concept of all screen front, but Mi Mix 2 has arguably came closest to turning this concept into a reality.
The display supports features like Sunlight Display and Reading Mode, which makes the experience of using all screen display much more useful. The display has some great brightness levels and viewing angles. The long screen of Mi Mix2 is greatly suitable for games, movies, YouTube videos, scrolling through social media, using kindle etc.
The Mi Mix 2 is powered by Snapdragon 835 processor. As mention before, the performance of the software is smooth without any stuttering or hiccup. The phone has a RAM of 6GB and internal storage of 128 GB out of which 118 is accessible for use. There is no option of microSD card so the storage cannot be extended. There are two nano SIM slots available, but 4G can be activated at one SIM at a time. As far as the connectivity of the phone is concerned, Mi Mix 2 fulfils all the requirements. Mi
Mix 2 supports six network modes, 43 bands and VoLTE. Mi Mix 2 also supports Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi and NFC.
The call placement is of decent quality. The performance of single speaker is also quite decent with sufficiently loud sound. The sound is obviously not as loud as a stereo speaker but it is loud enough to enjoy a good movie session with group of friends. In terms of the performance, Mi Mix 2 is top notch and stands up to the expectations of a flagship smartphone.
Mi Mix 2 has back camera of 12 megapixel and front camera of 5 megapixel. The front camera of the phone is placed at the bottom. So, if you want to take a selfie, then you have to turn the phone upside down. This can be little annoying at first, but you can get used to it with time. Mi Mix 2’s Camera app consists of some modes like Beautify, Manual, Square and Panorama. Manual mode can help you to customise the shorts as per your liking. There is a Group-selfie mode to capture the selfies by face detection. You can also use Audio mode to time your shorts or voice trigger them. There is Tilt-Shift mode that helps you to blur out some portions on the shorts. There is a Straighten mode also that helps to perfectly align your sorts. Lastly, there is HHT mode that helps to take better pitchers in low light conditions.
The rear camera consists of 4-axis optical stabilization that helps in taking better shorts in low light conditions. The pitchers are clear with good colour payoff in good lighting. But in low lighting conditions the quality of the pitchers considerably decreases. The HDR mode in the camera app is a toggle rather than being automatic like on many flagship phones. HHT mode does help to improve the low light shorts, but it is nothing great. Also, when you look at the shots on a laptop they somewhat lack the amount detail as you would aspect form a phone of this price range. The flash can be a little overbearing too.
The camera app can recodes up to 4K video at 30fps. The 4-axis optical stabilization does give a bit of stability to the video. But same as the camera, the videos also lacks detail when looked from a PC.
The front facing camera works decently, but the placement of the camera can be an issue. Especially the fact that you can’t use the camera upside down in some applications like Instagram and Snapchat, can be complete thumbs down for many people. Overall, Mi Mix 2 has a decent camera but for flagship phone, it could use some advancement in the quality.
Mi Mix 2 offers battery of 3400 mhA, which is decent but nothing great. Even after playing HD videos in a stretch, the battery lasted a decent 12+ hours. The battery life also fairs well in day to day use. If you use your phone lightly then the battery can easily last up to 1.5 day, maybe even more than that. Even with a heavy use battery can last up to a day or 13 hours, depending upon the use. The phone comes with 9V/2A charger and a USB Type C cable, which provides quick charging.
Mi Mix2 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor with MIUI V8. MIUI is a customised ROM by Xiaomi and their backbone. The phone runs on the Android Nougat 7.1.1. The performance of the Operating System is smooth, without a hint of lags or stuttering. The phone offers 6GB of RAM with 128 GB. MIUI does give some useful features like multiple instances for same app etc. But there are some shortcomings of MIUI also, like late software updates. Also, there is a problem of visibility of limited number of notification when the screen is locked. You have to open the application every time there is notification.
