Display Issue Bogs OnePlus 6 users post Software Update

Launched back in mid-May, OnePlus 6 has been one of the most trending smartphones in the country with regular updates for their custom skin OxygenOS. But the June update for OxygenOS presented users with some issues regarding the flickering of the display. The issue was first encountered in the OxygenOS 5.1.8 software update, which has not yet been resolved with the recent OxygenOS 5.1.9 update in July.

Some users of the OnePlus 6 reported that they faced display flickering issues with the June OS update when using the device in adaptive brightness mode. They reported that using the phone in bright sunlight with adaptive brightness triggers the flicker and occur significantly when viewing apps or websites with white backdrop or bright colors.

On July 23, users commented on the OnePlus forum’s post claiming that the only solution that made auto brightness work for their smartphones is a third-party app, Lux, as the adaptive brightness mode miserably fails in doing the task. A lengthy post thread on Reddit mentions that the display on their OnePlus 6 smartphones “flickers rapidly when in direct sunlight”. The issue may prove to be a thorn in the company’s way of competing against premium flagship smartphones like the Huawei P20 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S9.

It is being claimed that OnePlus uses Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) at 236Hz to adjust screen brightness when on adaptive brightness mode. Users claim that the use of PWM is not a bug but a feature on OnePlus 6 smartphones in order to adapt environment lighting conditions.

According to some users, they noticed the display flicker issue only after updating their smartphones to OxygenOS 5.1.8 that was released in June. The users went on to say that the issue skipped the eyes of developers and returned unfixed in July with OxygenOS 5.1.9 update. A user even claimed that clearing cache worked for him and he no longer faced the flickering issue but that also does not certain as to how long the solution lasts.

One user took it to XDA Developers forum and mentioned on the post the occurrence of a bug which appears only when the auto brightness is turned on, and the brightness goes up till 100 percent. OnePlus has not yet been active enough to respond to the issues faced by the users and notify them about any solution through update or tweaks.

Previously, users complained about battery drainage issues with their OnePlus smartphones late last month. The OxygenOS 5.1.8 software update had previously resulted in prominent battery drain issues on the OnePlus 6, along with the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T that ran on OxygenOS 5.0.3.
