It’s raining flagship smartphones this year, and so is ‘true full screen’ displays. Few months back, Oppo unveiled the Find X with motorised sliding cameras and Vivo launched the NEX smartphone with an elevating front camera. The latest addition to adapt to this technology is Xiaomi, who has just launched the much awaited Mi Mix 3 with flagship specifications, including a magnetic camera slider which reveals the dual AI front cameras. That’s not all, Mi Mix 3 is the first ever smartphone to come with 10GB of RAM, and will be the first one to support 5G network. The smartphone was launched in Beijing on 25th October 2018.

Talking about Xiaomi’s business in India, it has been a successful smartphone brand since its trade debut in the country in 2014. Since then it rapidly gained the market share in India and now the company has become the biggest smartphone maker in India at the end of the third quarter, as well, of 2018. Xiaomi has outshadowed Samsung to gain the No. 1 spot with 27 percent market share in India. The smartphone manufacturer is one of the most popular brand in the country with most number of products sold. When it comes to quality and affordability, Xiaomi wins the show with its affordable powerbanks, smartphones, and even the smart TVs.

The Mi Mix 3 comes with all the important sensors, along with the dual cameras, hidden just behind the display, popping up via a manual magnetic slider mechanism. A true bezel-less experience will obviously take you by surprise, as the smartphone comes with no noticeable bottom chin unlike the previous generation Mi Mix smartphones. Also, there is no display notch as the Mi Mix 3 had nothing to worry about the front camera and other sensors, all thanks to the magnetic slider. The flagship smartphone is as stunning as it gets, not just in terms of looks but also the specifications that it carries. Mi Mix 3 comes equipped with up to 10GB of RAM, a flagship Snapdragon 845 chipset, and four cameras.

Sporting a 6.39-inch FHD+ Samsung AMOLED panel, Mi Mix 3 offers a screen-to-body ratio of 93.4% along with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor comes paired with Adreno 630 GPU, up to 10GB RAM, and up to 256GB onboard storage. The Mi Mix 3 will run MIUI 10 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The camera department is handled by four AI cameras – dual 12MP wide-angle and telephoto lenses at the rear; and an AI-based 24MP (Sony IMX576) sensor coupled with a secondary 2MP sensor at the front, fixed in the magnetic slider. The rear wide-angle lens is a Sony IMX363 sensor, while the telephoto lens is a Samsung S5K3M3+ sensor with f/1.8 and f/2.4 apertures, respectively. The rear cameras on the Mi Mix 3 also feature OIS, AI background music, super slow-motion (960fps) recording, and other AI features including an AI bokeh effect. The front cameras also come paired with a selfie light, AI beautification, and AI bokeh features.

A fingerprint sensor sits at the rear of Mi Mix 3 for fast unlocking, the 3,200mAh battery packed inside the ceramic back supports 10W Qi wireless charging just like the Mi Mix 2S, which never made its way to India. This time the battery supports Quick Charge 4.0+ and 18W Quick Charge 3.0, too. Other than that, the Mi Mix 3 supports dual 4G VoLTE, dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and features the traditional USB Type-C charging port.

The customizable magnetic slider is expected to last for around 3,00,000 cycles, as per Xiaomi. The slider can be customised to make personalised sound every time you slide it, or it can even act as a shortcut to make calls, or take a selfie. There is a dedicated AI button on the left of the smartphone which will launch the virtual assistant or can be remapped to perform some other action.

Wrapping up, the Mi Mix 3 has been priced at CNY 3,299 (roughly Rs 34,900) for the base 6GB RAM and 128GB variant, CNY 3,599 (approx. Rs 38,100) for the 8GB RAM and 128GB variant, and CNY 3,999 (around Rs 42,300) for the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage variant. All these variants will be up for sale starting November 1. The Mix 3 will be available in three colour options – Onyx Black, Jade Green, and Sapphire Blue. Apart from the above-mentioned variants, a 10GB RAM + 256GB storage variant will be made available by the end of November. It will be a ‘Forbidden City’ special edition that will be priced at CNY 4,999 (roughly Rs 52,900). However, the company has stated that a 5G variant will be unveiled next year in the European markets. That said, the Indian availability and pricing of the Mi Mix 3 is expected to be announced by early 2019 as the Indian market would be a great step for Xiaomi’s fare.
