We are in 2018, and it might not be wrong to say that 21st century is controlled by advanced technology. And smartphones are one of the fastest growing technologies. Nowadays, the boring huge bezelled devices are replaced by ultra modern bezel-less display, and they look very premium. As the modern displays overcome various disadvantages of previous generations but every positive sign has its negative aspect. So, we have made a list of 5 advantages and 5 disadvantages of bezel-less displays.

5 Advantages of Bezel-less Displays

  • Gorgeous Futuristic Looks

As the time moves forward, our technology grows exponentially, and now we have gorgeous looking bezel-less edge-to-edge displays. These types of displays not just look futuristic but stunning as well. The bezel-less design changed the whole scenario of smartphones, as it introduced a brand new form factor. And definitely the thin and tall screens are looking premium.

  • Utilisation of Space

Bezel-less screens are transforming the way of space utilisation on the mobile devices. Previously, in 16:9 displays we used to experience huge bezels or, we can say, chins at the top and bottom, which covered too much extra space on the screen and looked awkward and bulky. Bezel-less screen comes in different sizes and ratios like- 18:9,18.5:9,19:9 and many more. Out of these aspect ratios, Oppo Find X has got the best screen to body ratio with 93.8%.

  • New Innovation

Maximum utilisation of space on the smartphone, pushes manufacturers to find alternate solutions to place front camera, different sensors and earpiece. As a result, we have smartphones such as Vivo Nex and Oppo Find X. Vivo placed a pop up front camera and an under display fingerprint sensor to maximize the screen. On the other hand, Oppo used a separate motorised mechanism to place front and back cameras, IR face scanner in the Find X. Other companies prefer a notch at the top of screen to avoid motorised camera.

  • Seamless Experience

Bezel-less displays not only give futuristic looks but they also provide seamless visual experience to the user. If we are playing games or consuming online content, the edge-to-edge screen provides an infinity display experience. And the experience get doubled by the superior colours emitted by the display, Samsung’s Super AMOLED display is considered as the best Quad HD display to emits the best colours in the industry.

  • Viewing Angles

Viewing angle is a very important aspect of a display as it determines the quality of the screen. As the bezel-less display comes into play, it enhances the viewing angles by all aspects and this kind of display emits natural colours. If the bezel-less display sports Super AMOLED screen then black shades never fade out. Overall these displays solve the maximum problems.

5 Disadvantages of Bezel-less Displays

  • Easily Breakable

Every good thing has its negative aspect, similarly edgy displays always has a risk of being broken, even some industry best protections like Corning Gorilla Glass doesn’t guarantee you 100% unbreakable screen. The 2.5D curved design on bezel-less screens, that makes it more fragile. And the repair cost is also very expensive for example- the screen replacement cost of Samsung Galaxy Note 8 costs more than Rs 20,000, which is more than the complete price of a flagship phone called Honor Play.

  • Awkward Design and Screen Ratio

A normal smartphone, generally, has a standard design but bezel-less displays changed the scenario. Nowadays, mobiles with bezel-less design comes with taller screen, which often feel awkward and 90% media content that has made for 16:9 screens look stretched on bezel-less displays. If the media consumption and gaming getting awkward on these kind of displays then it could be a negative point as well. And the awkward design of bezel-less smartphones need time to settle down in the market, as consumers are not used this form factor.

  • Too Costly

“Infinity display, FullView display, Bezel-less display”- all of them are very immersive screens but every new technology costs us a lot. Whether it is Samsung’s Super AMOLED or P-OLED screen all of them come coupled with flagship devices. And high price behind the technology is because of its level of quality and the process used in production.

  • Extra Expenditure

The screen protection is not perfect on these type of displays, we need to invest on external screen protections like tempered glass. Bezel-less displays are made out of 2.5D curved glasses, which tends break easily as compared to the traditional glasses. Although , these kind displays are comes with corning gorilla glass protection but a general consumer don’t know, even Corning Gorilla Glass doesn’t guarantee you 100% shutter proof display. That’s why we always need to bare extra expenditure in the form of tempered glass.

  • Uncomfortable to Hold

A good display is not enough for overall experience, and the bezel-less displays are awkwardly tall which are often difficult or uncomfortable to use with one hand. In hand feel is the most important aspect for any device or any form factor, as an user will never compromise with the comfort just because of style. And just think from an normal user’s point of view, are they seriously looking for a mobile which is uncomfortable to handle???

Our View:-

Although bezel-less smartphones definitely look premium and gorgeous, these devices depict the speed of our technological advancement, and the bezel-less design shows us a sneak peek of future smartphones. But the disadvantages associated with Bezel-less screens are very significant and needed to be improved. Every negative aspects are bearable but always carry a threat of getting damaged is needed to be fixed. Overall the bezel-less displays are pretty unique and futuristic.
