When we think of Hindi Cinema or Bollywood, if I may say so, we think about predominantly Hindi Masala movies.  But there are some movies, which are much more than the normal mediocrity interlinked with loud song and male chauvinism. If you love movies and the art revolving around it, these are the five movies you should watch:

Gour Hari Dastaan:

This Vinay Pathak starrer is a soul stirring movie. This movie talks about the prodigy of a freedom fighter. And about his three decade of fight to receive a certificate for his contribution to the national movement. The lead actor excels in portraying this extremely sensitive character with humility and perseverance.  This movie surely deserves a place in this list.

Margarita, With a Straw:

Kalki Koechlin is one of the best actresses, we have right now. And this movie proves her sheer raw talent undoubtedly. Kalki plays Laila, a girl who has Cerebral Palsy, who discovers herself beautifully as the journey progresses.  All those who are tired of watching movies on conventional leads, this one is a delight!

Haqeeqat:

This movie is a predominantly, war movie, and mind you not a conventional war movie. This movie talks about what it is to deal with a war that you have lost. It talks about the harsh realities of 1962 war and Chetan Anand’s directorial has brilliantly woven history and drama along. All those who wish to gain a sneak peek to a soldier’s life, you have to watch this movie!

Raincoat:

Directed by Rituparno Ghosh and a National Award winner, do we need to say more? No, right. This movie showcases a lonely wife who meets her ex-fiancée and how knowingly yet unknowingly they help each other through their difficulties!

Aligarh:

This is one of the gems that Indian Cinema has. With director Hansal Mehta skilfully helming the movie, it is a mixed bag of emotions and fearlessness. It plays on the minds of the viewer with its heart wrenching script.  This movie solely belongs to Manoj Bajpayee and his stellar performance.  Aligarh boasts of another spine-chilling performance by Rajkumar Rao. This film certainly lacks of any mainstream songs but its background score does add tremendously to the storyline.
