From notches to full screen displays, pop-up cameras and in-display fingerprint sensors, 2018 has seen a lot. The newest addition to the lot is Vivo NEX which was officially launched in India on July 19 at Rs 44,990. Vivo NEX offers a pop-up camera mechanism which slides out as soon as the camera app is opened, turning the screen into a full view display. That’s not all, Vivo NEX also has other interesting features, such as hidden sensors and a “full screen” earpiece.

To recall, the recently launched Oppo Find X had a similar full view display along with a motorised front camera that slid up along with the hidden rear cameras.

Vivo NEX Specifications and Features

Vivo NEX offers a 6.59-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2316 x 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 388 ppi. The screen is a bezel-less Ultra FullView display with 91.24% of screen-to-body ratio giving an aspect ratio of 19.3:9. Vivo NEX comes powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC clocked at 2.8 GHz and Adreno 630 GPU as graphics booster. The dual camera setup at the rear includes a primary sensor of 12MP with f/1.8 aperture and a secondary depth-sensing 5MP sensor with f/2.4 aperture. The pop-up mechanism consists of an 8MP front camera (f/2.0 aperture), with no support of face unlock on the Vivo NEX. 4K videos can be recorded using the rear cameras. The back panel is a curved one with a twilight-color scheme which gives a rainbow color effect. Backed by a 4,000 mAh Li-Ion battery, the Vivo NEX also supports Dual-Engine Quick Charge technology via a USB Type-C cable. The NEX comes in an 8GB RAM + 128GB ROM variant with no microSD card slot for memory expansion. Vivo has adhered to the 3.5mm headphone jack for their NEX smartphone. Based on Android 8.1 Oreo, the device runs on Vivo’s custom FuntouchOS 4.0 with gesture controls as it doesn’t offer any on-screen navigation button. There is a custom physical button on the left of the device, dedicated for launching the Google Assistant and Google Lens app. With no support of face unlock, Vivo NEX offers an in-display pressure-sensitive fingerprint sensor just like the Vivo X21. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n ac, USB Type-C charging port, but no NFC support. Vivo NEX uses a new screen sound casting technology which makes the entire screen an earpiece for listening to calls.
